Oryx is more of a troll then his son... (Destiny)
Crota always dropped NLB/Dragons Breath for me. I think I went into HoW with ~40 exotic shards just because he never dropped the helmet or hand cannon for me, and those were what I really wanted. I never did get a sparrow drop from him.
Now I had the luck of getting invited by a friend into an amazing raid group, and pounded out 3 Oryx Challenge clears in 4 attempts, only to get 3 320 hand cannons with terrible rolls and 310 helmets.
Considering I already had a 320 Zouli's bane with good rolls from the last Oryx challenge, and needed 320 helmets, class items, arms or chest pieces, you would think I could walk away with something.
Sure, my MIDA and Ace of Spades are now 318, but I already had those guns. I don't really feel that my character advanced at all. It's a shame but the other drops were all 310-314 and went into secondary gear that I only use in PVP.
This is the downside of the random light level stuff. Lots of times you go away from the raid with no advancement. At least with etheric light it was a question of which item would be maxxed out for super fun times (i'm looking at you Fatebringer).
wait... Oryx drops a hand cannon?!
Sign me up for the next challenge!
Of course, as you alluded to, I will probably just get socks.

Oryx is more of a troll then his son...
It's funny, for me it's been the other way around. I've gotten almost all of what I need out of the new raid with the exception of a hard mode hunter helm. But Crota was the jerk for me. I still have yet to receive either normal or hard mode ships.

wait... Oryx drops a hand cannon?!
Yeah, I've been using it for the raid to keep up my light level, and one of my friends said it's like a naval cannon going off and thrall are exploding from firefly left and right. I feel the range issues really start kicking in around Golgeroth, but usually after that I switch to ToM so it isn't to big of an issue.
I've tried to use it in PVP, but no dice. Your bullets flat out disappear.

like a naval cannon going off
Similar reload times, I guess.

wait... Oryx drops a hand cannon?!
It reloads around the same rate as the first version of Thorn before the buff right? Which does equal to an old naval cannon.

Casual.
on my current characters I have 11 hard mode crota completions and 25 normal mode for a total of 36 times with no ship. guess it could be worse?
And that's before you account that I had a hunter that I deleted shortly after HoW launched (and thus no longer have raid stats for).

Bungie hates him for figuring out that one weird trick!

I reviewed his stats. What happened next was awful.
Turns out he's better than me.

I just looked at my own stats, and noticed something kind of interesting.
VoG completions: 85
CE completions: 84
KF completions: 18
... one of these things is not like the others...

Heh. My numbers:
VoG completions: 13
CE completions: 20
KF completions: 17
And with respect to KF, for every hour spent on a FINISHED raid, there are probably 10 hours spent on unfinished ones. (The other two... there are almost no 'started but didn't finish' runs.)
I did almost no raiding before TTK came out; I couldn't make the timing work often enough. :(

What changed?

What changed?
A big part of it was that before TTK, I was on the 360, which had a much smaller userbase among my friends - when I got on, the likelihood that I could spontaneously grab 5 people for a raid was really, really small (and planning ahead was hard last year). My biggest playing partner wasn't willing to switch to an Xbone until the Halo 5 Xbone was released, so I stayed on old-gen until then.
I don't think that's all of it - i think I just have more time to play now than I used to. But that's a big part of it.

Side note
Yeah. I had so many unfinished King's Fall raids that I had to schedule my own raid and mock threaten everyone into helping me get one beginning to end run in. Maybe it's just longer and more complicated? Where almost everyone has to actually do something? Or maybe it's because there are fewer (or no?) ways to cheese it unlike "Vault of Shooting Oracles in Complete Safety" or "Crota's All Cheese All The Time" raids?

It's just waaaay longer.
Compared to VoG:
Raise the Spire -> Open the Portal/Gate
"Trials" of Kabr -> Tomb Ship Jumping
Confluxes/Oracles -> Totems
Templar -> Warpriest
Gorgons -> Golgoroth's Basement
???(Gorgons again?) -> Golgoroth
Platforms -> Pistons
Gatekeeper -> Daughters
Atheon -> Oryx
In my experience, even during Vanilla, Vog's Encounters were much shorter then the corresponding fights in KF are now.

Considering how long they've been available I wouldn't expect equivalent completion numbers:
VoG is 1 year, 5 months old
CE is 1 year, 3 months old
KF is only 6 months old

Every team that beats Crota has these 2 things in common

That, plus I'd argue that the loot sucks compared to VoG or CE. Less insentive to replay on a regular basis.

How I'd remix The Kings Fall to be more approachable.
Yeah. I had so many unfinished King's Fall raids that I had to schedule my own raid and mock threaten everyone into helping me get one beginning to end run in. It's just so very very stinking long, and it smells like hive. The complexity of each encounter adds to this, but if it weren't so long a difficult encounter might not end the night. As far as pacing, it's paced well, just too much.
IMHO, if it were 2/3 the length it'd be a better raid. I sometimes think I'd prefer it split apart & have had two smaller raids, a shorter raid at just under 1/2 the length and the final raid at just over 1/2 the length.
The first smaller raid could have (major encounters bolded, minor italicized, cooldowns plaintext):
- Opening the portal (current method).
- Ship Jumping Puzzle
- Power the Glyph
- Defeat the Warpriest
- ??? Transept easy mode, just one side?
- Defeat the Sisters
The second larger raid could have:
- Opening the portal and/or defeating one/a series of Court of Oryx champions.
- Golgoroth's Cellar
- Defeat Golgoroth
- Transept Jump Puzzle requiring a stop at the exotic chest
- ??? Summon Oryx (something vaguely similar to powering the glyph, maybe another court campion?).
- Defeat Oryx
I dunno, maybe it'd be best to end w/ the Warpriest & continue on w/ Golgoroth, tho' ending w/ the Warpriest seems a touch small, & having the 3 big hitters (golgoroth, sisters, & oryx) seems like a lot, with most of the frustration falling on those encounters.
I suspect if bungie reused the portal, transept & oryx room the community would complain about them reusing/stretching assets to make 2 raids out of what should just be 1, but I still think it would be better. Maybe they could have pitched it as one massive raid in 2 parts to mitigate the entitled complaining.

That's another 8 CE runs without you! Robot's gonna get way ahead. :(

Yep, the reward/"risk" sucks for me
KF is comparable to the very end of Crota's End, imo. I usually skipped Crota whenever I played out of sheer frustration. It was only when I was overleveled that I started enjoying fighting him.
King's Fall, with the exception of Golgoroth (which I love to run gaze duty on), is incredibly frustrating to me, due to its very low margin for error (Totems, I'm staring with all my anger at you). When you top that off with the double drop rates (drops themselves AND drop's level), I just find myself sighing in frustration whenever I think of running the raid...

It is noticeably harder for less than perfect groups.
It's why you don't see as many events in the fireteam builder, and when you do they generally have two or fewer openings not reserved by the creator.
To clarify, I meant in comparison to other raids. You could have people who don't understand how to double jump or tell right from left in VoG/Crota and be fine.

It's true.
Weird how frequently someone not knowing right from left, how to count, how to double jump, how to change directions without stopping shows up in our raids.
It wasn't a problem though until King's Fall.

This guy has more glimmer than you. You'll never guess why.

Except for the ships, Kerm, I think you actually were doing pretty great, the few times I've ran with you.
About those ships, though, I'd gladly give you some pointers about what I've noticed you tend to do with the Warlock next time we're running. Tiny stuff that makes your life much harder, like not feathering the jump and not sprinting before jumping.

The ships are weird. I don't remember how recently we've played but recently in the same week I've aced the ships on hard mode and failed multiple times on normal.

Ships have changed...kinda.
I used to blink the ships. I can't anymore, as I die from fall damage constantly. I think something has changed there. I can still Blink through the other jumping puzzles.

I do get more hurt than I used to back at KF's launch
Maybe I'm feathering differently, but there could be something else

Interesting. Maybe it wasn't in the same week. I just remember making it through hard mode without dying, and then the next dying a lot in normal mode.
