Destiny D&D campaign (Destiny)

by Cody Miller @, Music of the Spheres - Never Forgot, Sunday, March 13, 2016, 00:00 (3272 days ago)

Anybody in SoCal here who plays D&D? A friend of mine has spent the last few months creating a campaign set in the world of Destiny. He says it draws from the lore but does not repeat any existing stories. It's almost a "what could have been" and starts from when your ghost first wakes you.

The plan is to start early April.

I don't, but wish I did. Always wanted to give D&D a shot, but never had (or made, I suppose) the opportunity.

A Destiny campaign sounds interesting. Keep us updated; I'd like to hear about how it goes and what happens!

D&D is for nerds.

I should know, I just built my group a projection table.

What system will you guys be using?

I haven't messed with dungeongrid, I'll have to check that out! Currently the table runs roll20 and I'm trying to figure out maptools to the point I can run it as quickly so I have an offline option as roll20 seems to still be having a lot of server outages when we play.

Features? Well. It's a table. You can sit at it and put stuff on it!

You're probably more interested in other aspects of it though. Should I feel bad for hijacking a thread from Cody?

The table itself sits just below desk height and has dice boxes, storage, and cup holders built into it. It also has a drop in map deck built into it which can be removed when other games are to be played around a bad ass table. The map deck has a large projector screen built into it as well as a mount for a picopro projector that suspends the projector about 40 inches above the deck.

The table runs on a small linux SBC currently running Ubuntu MATE stripped down to Firefox and basic utilities to run roll20 on a guest account while the DM runs a the game from a laptop.

Full spectrum LEDs border the underside of the map deck and table to light the room and papers and such without bleeding light onto the projector screen so it's all bright and crisp.

It's been a lot of work but so far my group loves it and the amount of build request I'm getting in my inbox have me debating running a Kickstarter to give people another option than the $10k geekchic tables.

Nah, Raga likes pestering Beorn about adding more features to DungeonGrid. Compatibility with your table is, now, top priority in our (the requesters) list.

Ahhhhh. In that case, I agree! If you need real world testing I'd love to get my hands on an offline version for the table. And when we start producing tables I'd like to ship with proprietary software to run games in so you know, develop that... please and thanks.

In all seriousness, I've been a little headstrong trying to work with roll20 just for how easy building a campaign is in their structure - but I would LOVE to have an offline tool for building and displaying maps. I'm going to play with your app a bit and start submitting my own feature request soon, I'm sure

Literally just dice, paper and a table. We do it all in our imaginations and don't worry about boards and shit. (Not that your table isn't cool :-)

Unrelated: which one's best for newbs?

I did an exceptionally short campaign with my friends in 4, and I liked it quite a bit, but the others didn't hate it. They said it was like a baby version for noobs and I was dumb for liking it.

Now arguably, they're correct, cause D&D is kind of dumb. Is 4 good?

Pathfinder or version 3.5 seem to be the favorites among the groups that I played with.

the general consensus on 4 is no thanks.

We just started a campaign running 5th edition. those of us that have played used to play AD&D, 3.5, and a little pathfinder. so far we are really enjoying 5th edition, the rules and balance make a lot more sense for a lot of things and we are really enjoying it. the "Starter box" cost about 10 bucks and comes with a rule book and module and enough fun to get your party to 5th level. honestly, I'd recommend a newb to play pathfinder or 5th edition about equally.

but not 4th. 4th is for people that want to play WoW with miniatures and dice.

Can confirm Pathfinder is pretty cool. Been playing with some fine DBO folks and Raga for the past dunno how many months (MANY months) online on Paizo.com (with the help of DungeonGrid for visualizing). All of Pathfinder's rulebooks are easily accessible in the site and the UI for them has had a major overhaul recently.

This is our campaign's main page. There are a two sub-forums within it. "Gameplay" is where the game is actually played and Discussion is where we usually do level-ups and used to ask the GM for clarifications (we now have a Hangouts group to pester each other at any time). One of the coolest features, IMO, is the die roll, which is seeded on some secret number in a way that, no matter how many times you edit a post, the RNG will always output the same number.

DungeonGrid is what we use for maps. Beorn once made a Google Sheet to help our GM draw a map, then went full-blown crazy programmer and made DG. It was around the same time FTB happened, so I'm still trying to find out what the hell he took then so I can be this productive in such a short timeframe as well. I, for one, find the distance calculator handy as hell, as well as the aura render.

FTB was a full year later…
