... but then rumours of a PS4.5 starting floating around (as in developers are already being told what kind of specs they can expect). So now I'm waiting to hear more. If news about a PS4.5 is already starting to sneak out, there's a possibility we'll see it released before the end of the year.

The catch is that I still want PSVR, but I can't afford to buy it AND a new PlayStation anytime close together. If they both come out around the same time, I think I'll get an PS4.5 first, then a PSVR a little further down the road.

The chances of the PS4.5 coming out this year are practically nil according to all sources. So no need to worry.

They already do that. They did it with the XBox 360 when they upgraded all of the hardware from the base model. They made it sleeker and added wifi.

Which is fine in my book, I'm concerned about the PS4k having better graphics and splitting the market that way. AFAIK the 360 kept the same performance, just updated hardware.

I might be okay with the PS4k having better graphics capabilities, as long as I don't feel that the games are developed with it in mind instead of my current PS4.

EDIT: And there dang well better not be any PS4k exclusive games.

This gen has been strangely nerfed so far.

by CruelLEGACEY @, Toronto, Tuesday, March 22, 2016, 15:02 (3262 days ago) @ dogcow

I feel like there are several factors all contributing to the idea that Sony and Microsoft both want to release better versions of their current consoles. When the PS4 and Xbox One shipped, developers/publishers were determined to keep all new releases "cross-gen". So the new consoles were basically just getting 360/PS3 games that looked a little better. After about a year of that, when publishers saw that last-gen sales were almost non-existent (despite the install base), they decided to shift focus. In most cases, publishers seem to have shifted to PC as lead platform for their new games, with PS4/Xbox One getting watered-down, technically unpolished versions of those games. We seem to have skipped over the meaty mid-point of the console gen where developers really maximize what they can do with the hardware. A big part of this is the fact that there are almost no console exclusives left anymore. All of Microsoft's "exclusives" from here on out will be PC games that get Xbox One ports, and Sony barely has any exclusives of their own.

So with lead development shifting so quickly to PC, I can see why Sony & Microsoft would want their consoles to be able to get a little closer to PC performance. Right now, they're just so far behind.

There's a difference between "being capable of" and doing 4k graphics. If they can focus that increase in power towards processing and improved performance, It would mitigate any split in playerbase. I feel like devs would focus on stuff like draw distance, loading times, graphical settings, and such. Games like War Thunder, Warframe, and Planetside 2 (IIRC) already allow a wealth of graphical/performance options. PS4K would allow people to activate ALL the things. We don't need 4k anything.

Very true. We can barely do 1080p as it is. Look at how many games still upscale. 1080p upscales very well to 4K. You are better off putting that extra power into better effects / shaders / etc than an increase in resolution. I would even be thrilled if you could go 60fps instead of 30fps, but that would also depend on whether the CPU gets boosted too.

Avatar

This I would be fine with.

by Funkmon @, Tuesday, March 22, 2016, 15:04 (3262 days ago) @ Cody Miller

If they put out a PS4.5 that did 60FPS, but all games were programmed for both the PS4 and PS4.5, just at 30 FPS for the PS4 or something, I'm cool with that. What I don't like is the quick obsolescence, like Nintendo used to do with Game Boys and DS things. They were ostensibly the same platform, but developers could develop for the new one exclusively, if they wanted. That sucked.

How long should a generation last?

by CyberKN ⌂ @, Oh no, Destiny 2 is bad, Tuesday, March 22, 2016, 14:33 (3262 days ago) @ Funkmon

I was thinking about this yesterday. The 360/PS3 generation was considered unusually long at the time, lasting a total of 8/7 years respectively. I think 5 years was the average before that, but I don't remember exact dates.

I think it ultimately comes down to personal preference how long you want your purchase to last you, so there isn't a "perfect" amount of time.

I bought my PS4 a year after launch (late 2014), and I'd like it to last at least a couple more years before I have to think about upgrading. If a newer console launches in that time, I'm fine with that as long as there's a reasonable period of cross-generation games.

Five years with a year to upgrade.

Anyone else snag a PSVR today?

I'm surprised at how many people here are actually pre ordering one.

Consider that the Oculus launch titles were pretty much panned by most gaming publications. (As arstechnica puts it, Quantity over Quality). I don't know, I just see no reason to preorder and not just buy it when the games are there.

Because they are giving money to the developers that will improve it for when we buy it! Duh! :-)

I have faith the games will be there very soon. Golem and Adrift are enough to sell me on it. (The former in particular because of the people involved.) I've thoroughly enjoyed many VR demos at this point, and I find VR itself amazing. I want a longer version of the three- or four-minute experiences I've already had. If nothing else, I've got an iMAX-sized screen I can watch at home. I think VR is going to be big, and I don't want to miss a minute of it.

I would say I played Adrift for about 10 minutes. It of all the VR games I've played probably has the most potential to be great.

I tried the Virtual Boy before (not) buying it. That was the right call.

I think I don't want to pre-order anything that might not fit my head, might not accommodate my glasses, and might make me vomit if I use it.

Don't blame you for wanting to try it. The PSVR has won praise for being the most comfortable. It's designed to accommodate glasses. Of primary concern to developers is preventing sickness, but of course there's never a guarantee for something like that.
