Unpopular opinion of the day: mechanical keyboards suck. (Destiny)
by cheapLEY , Tuesday, March 29, 2016, 11:48 (3404 days ago)
Who wants to listen to that clackity clack bullshit all day?
This post brought to you by TotalBiscuit's Co-Optional podcast, where apparently a pleasant listening experience isn't even close to a top priority.

They suck for anyone not using them.

I use five different keyboards on an average day, three of them mechanical. It's fairly easy to drown out the sound of two of them, but the one I use with the PS4s is a full-on clicky-clacky and it's impossible to drown out. No idea how people can game with them, but I assume that's what the headsets are for.
Personally, I prefer the quieter ones.

I play DOTA with WildThing and he has a mechanical keyboard that sometimes gets picked up on his headset mic it's so loud :-)

What kind of switches are in it?

I think his favorite is brown... but I'm unsure.

Although his favorite programming keyboard is his old-school Macintosh keyboard from the 80's. The old gray ones. He had to hardwire an adapter thing to it just to get it to translate the signal for a USB hookup.
Brown's a quieter switch. Makes sense. It's a tactile one but not clicky.
The Apple keyboard he is probably talking about is the Extended Keyboard, from the late eighties, or the Extended Keyboard II (the better one) from the early nineties. They use an ALPS switch.
But he could have just used an ADB to USB converter. They're only $30?!!?!??! Holy shnikies. I'd wire my own too.

Yeah, there is a cheaper way to do it, but I believe it involves soldering :-)

The loud one that Mac is referring to while playing DoTA is a Das with Cherry Blues. I've also got a IBM Model M at home, but I think people would hate that even more =)
The work one is the glorious Apple Extended II with salmon Alps. Best feel, best sound, best price (with a little DIY). Best.

I use a Matias Tactile Pro*. All of the ALPS, with none of the adapting.
(If I could figure out where I left my AEKII I'd actually try using it. I loved that thing but it might be nostalgia.
* Mark II. I want a new one, but I'm holding out to see if the Mark V brings USB 3.0 hub

They certainly suck for recording nearby.

Someone with a mechanical keyboard who cares even a little bit about the quality of the audio going out would never use one. Luckily, I literally couldn't care less, so I infect Doom 3 Let's Plays with my annoying clicks. When I've recorded podcasts recently, I've never typed anything. That's kind of impolite. I might use a tablet maybe if I had to look something up while doing it.
I mean, I have like a dozen rubber domes but I just don't bother using them.
But don't hate them until you've tried them side by side with a normal one. You can buy one at your local Micro Center for $30 and return it no questions asked if you don't like it.
I found this particular keyboard used for like $19 on eBay a while back and bought it. Works great; uses MX Blue clones, probably Outemu. It's a decent keyboard.

I guess I can't say I've tried them side by side, but I used a mechanical keyboard through highschool and into college. I got a Macbook during college, though, and haven't owned a proper desktop since then, so it's been nearly a decade since I've used a mechanical keyboard. I just don't care enough, I guess.

It's a big deal once you use one again.

I remember losing the model M we had when I was a kid and getting a Dell Quietkey and not minding much. I didn't care for decades until I used a Model M again, then used some Cherry switches. The difference was so night and day, I couldn't believe I didn't care earlier.

If I ever build a desktop, I'll definitely look into it. But right now my only computer is my Surface, and I don't even have a desk, so a mechanical keyboard would be useless.

you can still play pretty music with it by typing....

(completely joking about the title)
Now that's out of the way :)
The main reason I like mechanical keyboards is for the sound and feel. There's something about the combo and feel and sound that helps me know if I screwed up typing anything. I just am not as consistent with my typing on any of the laptop style keyboards or whatever you call them.
That said, It sucks for anyone else around you to have to listen to that crap all day.
I would love a mechanical keyboard that sounded like hammers banging on empty oil drums in an amphitheater at five paces, if I could. I would like every single click to ruin all the neighbour's souffles.
