Weekend Trials highlights [videos] (Destiny)

by CruelLEGACEY @, Toronto, Tuesday, March 29, 2016, 12:05 (3255 days ago)

Had a nice binge on Trials of Osiris this weekend. Friday night with Ottermack and TheeChaos, Sunday night with Korny and Sammy, Monday night with Slycrel and Peaksutah. Loads of laughs, plenty of facepalms, and a couple trips to the lighthouse :)

My general approach to the map this weekend was to avoid the camping snipe-fest by being as mindlessly aggressive as possible. Overall, it worked quite well. And when it didn't work, it was still way more fun that playing the sniping game :)

Some highlights from the weekend:

1. "He's just sitting in the corner!"

Sadly, I don't have a video of this one, but it wouldn't do much good unless you could hear our party chat. Sammy, Korny and I were steamrolling a team early in the night. During the final round, the pressure had apparently become too much for one of our opponents. We took down 2 players on the enemy team, but couldn't find the 3rd. I eventually found him back in their spawn, sitting in the corner with his back to me, staring at the sunset in the distance. "Awe, he's just sitting there!" I said. Korny and Sammy were on their way over to take a look and give a sympathetic wave when they suddenly heard the sound of our final opponent being obliterated by my Nova Bomb. Sammy and Korny burst out laughing, and didn't stop until well into the next match. Something about my bloodthirsty overkill seemed to set them off. I just really wanted to use my super! lol

2. PULL!

Much as I tried to avoid the sniper game, sometimes it just makes sense :)

3. Heavy Denial

Decided to recreate the Titan Slam clip I had posted a few days ago, this time with my Warlock.

4. Cheaters!!!

I discovered my new favorite use for the PS4 DVR feature. After Sammy, Korny and I made short work of an enemy team, one of our opponents sent me a DM saying "nice job, fu$#ing cheaters". So I saved the video of the entire match, uploaded it to YouTube, and sent him the link along with a message reading "Here you go. Watch the video and tell me where we cheated". Still waiting to hear back ;)

5. Titan Fail

Sure, he got me... but it didn't end up being the dramatic statement he was hoping for ;p

6. Leap of Faith

The fall damage almost killed me, but it was worth it to hit from such an unexpected angle.

7. Bladedancer still rocks

Towards the end of the night with Slycrel and Peaksutah, I decided to goof around a bit and have some silly fun. I switched to Bladedancer and spec'd for max agility and recovery, and equipped Mida and my Conspirathy Theory D with Battle Runner. Turns out, it worked really well! I always feel nervous sacrificing max armor in trials, but I was zipping in and out faster than the enemy team could hit me (most of the time). Might have to try it more often :)

8. Lighthouse surprise

This last moment was great for a few reasons. First of all, I managed to Warlock-slap my way out of what I was sure was an impossible situation. 2nd of all, Korny and Sammy were so busy arguing with each other (;p) that Sammy was taken totally by surprise when the "you've claimed the ultimate surprise" text popped up on screen. "wait... we did it?!" lol

Good times :)

Anyone else have any fun Destiny stories from the weekend?

My weekend was one of the most interesting in a while...

First was Sammy's return to Trials (first time in four months!). She may have been out of the game for a bit, but she's still got it (and by it, I mean serious anger management issues). Here are a couple of her tamer moments:

Here's a full match of our first game. A pretty good example of my ideal strategy on the map, and it was used in almost every single match over the weekend (besides the few teams that wised up on us):

After our Lighthouse run, I hopped over to Xbox with Squid and Zero. Running two Sunsingers was... not very fair:

It was a quick run...

Oh, and a note about Shotgun sliders: they're scary, but predictable...

Last night, I ran with Zero and Speed with the hope of getting the Scarab Heart emblem, since my trademark bad luck with RNG had not deemed me fit to earn one yet. This was definitely my favorite match of the weekend:

Had a lot of fun, even if Zero claimed that I wasn't a team player...

Oh, and speaking of RNG luck, it finally happened (no, not the Jade Rabbit)...

Do you have any clue...

...how crappy this thread makes me feel?

I watch a series of vids from Cruel and Korny, both showing astounding gameplay getting them (and their teams) to the Lighthouse multiple times, just over the course of a weekend... and I think back on last Thursday, when Korny and I played a series of Elimination games (which should, in theory, be even EASIER than Trials games) where we lost every one? (The last game, Cruel joined us, and we won - but it was a close thing, and it ended 5-4, and I died 3 times for every kill I had.)

I am living proof that 'Carrying someone to the Lighthouse' is not a universal thing.

I feel you Claud. I have been playing trials almost every week. And I even played with Zero and Squid, two very good players, and yet I've never come close to getting to the lighthouse. Maybe one day our time will come? I still joke with Beorn and Wildthing that it will probably happen around Year 7 of Destiny

It helps to know your team.

For example, when I'd play with Zero, I usually knew what he was going to do in most situations. I knew Squid's proclivities. You know where they are heading and their game plan, which allows you to help the team in a few ways, even if you're not as good. You can cover them, or do a noble self sacrifice.

If you know Squid is hiding with Pocket Infinity around a corner, and one guy is there, you can run in and do a 1 for 1 life trade as a split second decision. You know you'll get revived and Squid will melt the other two players who will be called to the area.

Also, announcing your intentions for that round as soon as it starts and not deviating also helps. If you aren't with the group, they need to know where you are and what you're doing. If they know you, they can guess what will happen as well and be prepared for it.

Being with good players can only do so much. It's a completely different mindset you have to be in for Trials. It's one I don't find particularly fun, so on the occasions I've played since TTK I've made it a point to not use it and told my team beforehand that I was playing to have fun and less to be good for Trials. PLEAD ALL YOU WANT, CHAPPY, NOT SWAPPING MY PLAY.

And I even played with Zero and Squid, two very good players, and yet I've never come close to getting to the lighthouse.

I thought we got to 8-1, with one of the losses being a 5-4 capture point choke?

Anyway, I just thought I'd weigh in on this, because it's taken me a really long time to get where I am in terms of "video game skill". I never had a video game system growing up, so my exposure to games was mostly from being at friends houses, and playing GoldenEye/Perfect Dark. I was absolutely awful and useless at both those games, and spent most of the time either going for melee kills or blowing myself up with proximity mines. It wasn't until I played Halo 1 for the first time (and experienced an Xbox controller) that I could finally envision a path to get better.

But it still took forever. I was in the middle of the pack in my group of friends when it came to LAN parties, so I focused on strategy. I also started to develop instincts and "moves", and started to move to the top of the group in the crazy 16 player FFA games we would play on Chill Out, just purely by throwing myself into the nearest battle and trying to pull off impossible sequences of kills.

When Halo 2 came out, I struggled playing the normal 4v4 slayer matches. It was so different from what we did in Halo 1, but I started to figure it out and held my own with my friends. I started to play more without them, especially once I went to college, and got into the Team Hardcore playlist and MLG (although was never a part of that community). I would play for hours, just hoping for an evenly skilled match where no one quit. This continued into Halo 3, playing by myself in the MLG playlist, learning to play the support role for anonymous players. Skill was important, but even more important was not doing dumb things that screwed your team over, and even more important than that was being in the right place at the right time to finish a teammates kill, or finish off a flag cap.

In the ever-infrequent LAN parties with my friends, I was now the best. When we made teams it was me against the next few best players. This continued into Halo: Reach, where I spent an embarrassing amount of free time my first 2 years of grad school playing Team Arena, getting high level Onyx percentiles playing by myself. Why? It was fun, and I was good at it.

Turns out all that practice translated to Destiny pretty well. When I look back at all that time I spent though...not much point in speculating, but certainly I could have accomplished other things. Anyway, I try to enjoy the competition for competition's sake these days. It's fun to test yourself, but it's dangerous to have your self worth caught up your accomplishments as an player.

So, that's the history that has gotten me to the Lighthouse quite a few a times (not to mention the guys I've gone with). Just thought I'd try to put into perspective the unseen background of videos like this. Of course, it's also possible that Korny & co. are just naturally good at video games.

If it makes you feel any better, Cruel runs with peaks and I every week, we've been doing this for months. I've never been to the lighthouse. It used to bug me a lot. It rarely does anymore.

Pretty sure I'm in the b leagues. I'm okay with it and have enjoyed the game archetype of trials regardless of lighthouse status.

So uh... I'm sorry, and it gets better? :D

Well I just hit 280 on Xbox, so I can technically play Trials... although given my light level and lack of gear, I wouldn't expect much carrying at this point lol. Happy to play any time though :)

Do you play any earlier on the Xbox? ;)

I know the answer.
