Does Microsoft Hate Me? (Destiny)

by Ragashingo ⌂, Official DBO Cryptarch, Thursday, April 14, 2016, 02:12 (3239 days ago)

For the last couple of weeks I have had just the most awful time playing Destiny because I'm constantly red bar... except my connection is perfectly fine as far as I can tell. Speed tests to the nearest servers report ping times in the 11 - 13 ms range. Speed reports consistently as 50Mb down and between 5 and 6Mb up... which is exactly what I pay for. Servers further away increase the ping slightly to the 40ms range but the speed remains constant. All other internet related things from downloads to streaming video is perfectly fine... so what the hell?!

Then, I remembered I cancelled Xbox live a couple of weeks back... it just hasn't expired yet. My Destiny experience has been Lagtacular... and I've been getting dropped or errored out of Xbox Live parties pretty often.. like several times a night... could I somehow have been relegated to totally crappy / over-capacity Xbox Live servers because I'm not currently paying but still playing?

Also... does anyone know any other ways I could test my connection... like to the Xbox Live network itself... so if I can't at least see some packet loss or something to show why my multiplayer experience is just total crap right now?

No. 1. Because who has time for that. And 2. Because everything else I do and all the tests I run show no problem. Even my Xbone's Detailed Network Statistics shows 14Mb down (a little low I guess but still plenty quick) 5.29 up 78ms ping and 0% packet loss...

Just curious if another online game performs the same. Destiny seems to react differently to routers and NAT'S than other games. Oddly I couldn't speak with Squid (in Destiny game chat) last night due to NaT issues, but we've played alot together and never had a problem. XBL party chat was fine though.

Also are you using a wired or wireless connection? It seems odd that your PC speeds are so much faster than your XB1. When we recently updated to 125M internets, the wireless is always way slower even with an N router. We run 125-100 down wired, and only 20 wireless.

Why did you cxl Live, did I miss a post?

Everything is wireless here. I'm doing speed test on iPhones, iPads, and a Mac and all are reporting about the same thing with normal variations. Oddly, the Xbone's latest test reported under 3Mb down... That's very much not right... Except I have no idea how to explain that since it is directly under the AirPort basestation...

Plugged in an ethernet cable and suddenly the Xbox is getting 50Mb down. That's... weird...

Wi-Fi is great for browsing the web, but it’s terrible for realtime communications. Wi-Fi packet loss can happen for any number of reasons.

No. I'm more inclined to believe that Microsoft can't design a wireless device to save their life. Every other piece of hardware was working flawlessly... Except the Windows 10 powered Xbone...

How is your connection to Destiny now that you are wired? Are you seeing fewer red bars and less lag?

Yes. It went back to normal. Like it had been for the previous six months with everything in the exact same location and exact same settings. I'm baffled, but it's fixed so whatevers..

Online games in general are extremely vulnerable to packet loss. A common problem with wireless is unpredictable packet loss. For example, your neighbor could have set up a new wireless access point on a similar frequency band. Our could have started using their microwave a lot more or there is a crappy wireless landline phone near you.

Your first step to investigating mysterious networking problems should always be use a wired connection. We have a help article about this: https://www.bungie.net/en/Support/Troubleshoot?oid=12915.

I wonder if that's what happened with mine. I was doing ok on wifi but suddenly started having the same problems. I had noticed new wifi signals from my neighbors around the same time, but didn't connect the dots. I went back to a wired connection and Destiny runs great (except for crashing when I use the Vanity).

Yeah, that's the thing about WiFi that people often forget - even if you configure it correctly on your side and everything appears working, it can sometimes crap out due to environmental factors beyond your control (your neighbor's wifi or other wireless device) that aren't necessarily there when you set it up. Speed testing is generally not useful in detecting things like that due to the transitory nature of such interference, and because such tests are not as sensitive to packet loss as realtime network applications like gaming.

Welp, I learned my lesson. Grabbing the spare network cable was one of the first things I should have done. Especially since I'm in a fairly dense wifi situation to begin with thanks to living in an apartment building.

I wonder if the Xbone's test that showed low download speed does something more fancy that the straight upload / download tests I was performing on all my other devices. The scary moral here (besides the above) might actually be to trust Microsoft more! :p

Oddly, the Xbone's latest test reported under 3Mb down... That's very much not right...

Keep in mind that those sort of speed tests are VERY far from being the ultimate oracle of network quality. All they do is cram all they can through for a few brief moments, and report how much they were able to cram. One anomalous result shouldn't be taken to have any meaning at all. That might have just been the moment when everyone in your city got home and started streaming Netflix. I'd say based on everything else you're seeing, your end is probably fine.

The most reasonable explanation is that there's a crappy route somewhere between your ISP and Destiny's servers. Unfortunately, your chances of actually tracking something like that down without the help of both of those entities isn't great. But it'll probably work itself out eventually. Things like that either get corrected, or traffic starts taking a different path.

From the router on the shelf in the basement into the furnace room, up the wall between floors, over the bathroom, into the office closet, around the office (under baseboard), through the wall, and finally into my entertainment center. :D
