What's up with this overwatch thing? (Gaming)
by Vortech , A Fourth Wheel, Thursday, June 02, 2016, 21:09 (3100 days ago)
I heard nothing about this before it launched, or IIRC even rally at launch. Oblique comments on twitter and such have been mixed, but I can't tell what the general consensus is. Video makes it look a lot like TF2 and I enjoy FPS games that require teamwork, and to a lesser extent class-based cooperation (Well, I liked Tribes and TF2. Those may be the only examples.)
Anyway, I'd be interested in a general temperature check from people who have played it.

I played it for a bit over two hours at a friend's house and absolutely loved it. It's a really fun class-based shooter with great characters and lots of charm. I couldn't say how well it holds up over the long term, but I strongly suspect pretty well, and knowing Blizzard, it'll be supported for a long time.

I've got it. I'm a big TFC/TF2 fan and it's got a lot of similarities. It's pretty fun, though I think I'm hardcore enough to miss destiny a little after playing it for a while. My biggest gripe is that there is no force feedback, so I have to visually determine where I'm being shot from. There's also no warning if you are near-dead other than your smallish health bar in the bottom left of the screen.
That said, it's got a lot of complexity and potential. I'll be playing it off and on here and there. Would be a fun game to play with a big group of friends. The art style is very much like TF2. The gameplay is quite rapid, much faster than Destiny. Matches are typically 5 minutes long. Oh, and micro-transactions that may or may not make you hate it depending on where you are on those. =)
It definitely doesn't take itself too seriously, which is a plus.
Also, my 10yo loves it to pieces. There's a lot to like there.

It's crazy that you heard nothing about Overwatch. I don't even follow video games much and I couldn't avoid it — it's crossed over from 'large game release' to 'minor cultural event'.

To be fair, I heard a LOT more fanfare over Battleborn (whose chatter is practically dead now *shrugs*) up until the open Beta, give or take Tracer's "scandal".
Seriously?

That's absolutely crazy to me. I only knew anything about Battleborn because I listen to things like the Giant Bombcast and Kinda Funny Games podcast (and a few others). I heard about Overwatch absolutely everywhere.
Following Gearbox on Twitter might've helped ;p

My experience was that Battleborn is: Crappy
by Kahzgul, Saturday, June 04, 2016, 20:24 (3098 days ago) @ CyberKN
Literally a poor translation of DotA style character progression jammed into an FPS framework with MMO style bosses. The beta was not fun at all, which is super disappointing because I was very, very excited for a new Gearbox IP.
Disclaimer: during/after the Beta, it was indeed EVERYWHERE

That's how much I enjoy playing this game. Different groups of friends on different systems, and I was more than happy to oblige playing with both.
Not worth the $60 console price...

... is how I feel about it, honestly. It's a ton of fun, but I can't recall ever seeing a game more limited in content than Overwatch. To put it into perspective, the entire game was essentially in the Beta. It came included in my brother's PS4 bundle, so we have one copy (since he wasn't too enthralled with it after playing it), but it's one of those games that gets really repetitive after a bit. I likely won't be buying it for myself until it's on a flash sale or price drop.
We did get Battleborn at launch a few weeks ago, though, and that one's still fun, since content-wise, it has fewer MP maps, but it does include eight 5-player story missions. Unfortunately not too many people picked up Battleborn, but given Gearbox's history of drowning us with quality post-launch content (the first new character is already one of my favorites), I hope people give it another look.
But yeah, if it wasn't for Overwatch's characters and tons and tons of marketing, I think it would have been chewed out for the lack of content and dismal unlock system (which is entirely cosmetic, sure, but way too grindy for what it is).

Did you play Battlefront? I guess maybe it technically had more content than Overwatch, it isn't anywhere near as good (in my opinion obviously). And even so, it only has more content by a slim margin.

I couldn't agree more, there. I think it's a shitty system, especially with the way it's monetized. That's honestly enough that I would heavily consider not buying it just because of that. Luckily, I don't have to make that decision, because I wouldn't by a competitive multiplayer only game to begin with.

Battlefront has a ton of content by comparison: Solo missions, co-op Survival missions, A ton of gametypes over a dozen maps, and a steady stream of unlocks.
Overwatch has two-ish game modes across a dozen samey maps (some of which only appear in certain game modes, none of which you choose), and that's it.
We bought Battlefront when it was on sale for $30 (essentially paying $15 each), and we had fun with it, and didn't find it lacking. We have a free copy of Overwatch, and we can't bring ourselves to buy a second copy for $30...

Wait, what? I don't know Gearbox beyond Borderlands, Duke and Colonial Marines, but I thought general consensus was that while they drown you in content, only 1 or 2 pieces are actually good?

No idea where you get your "general consensus", but I've never heard anything but praise for what's included in the Season passes that Gearbox does. The extra characters were great, and three of the four bonus campaigns in Borderlands 2 have received really high review scores (only the grind-based Hammerlock campaign was meh), and over half of the post-Season Pass content was a lot of fun, if ultimately enough to burn players out on the game.
Borderlands 1 DLC only got good reviews and reception.
To be fair, Colonial Marines did also get a ton of content (even a three/four-hour campaign add-on), but nothing that could salvage an already terrible game, so there's that...

I dont remember BL1 especially well, but I could have sworn only one DLC was particularly good? Zombie Island was slow and fairky grindy, the Uderdome was literally just "horde mode: the DLC" (though I appreciated the vault expansion) and the Claptrap one was largely a one-note joke.
The additional character(s) in BL2 were great additions, but again the Torgue, Hammerlock and Captain Scarlet DLC were only really interesting for their "raid" bosses and new vehicles. The final DLc, Tiny Tina's dragon thingamajig was good though.
Borderlands is solid DLC wise
by ProbablyLast, Saturday, June 04, 2016, 12:46 (3098 days ago) @ someotherguy
BL1 2/4 of the DLCs are really, really good.
BL2 One of the characters are fantastic, the other is pretty good. All 4 major DLCs are worth a playthrough, and 3 are great. At least one of the HeadHunter DLCs are worth it.
The PreSequel's DLC is good from what I hear, but I can't play the game long enough to experience it.
A week and a half and I've already played over 40 hours

It's just FUN!
by breitzen , Kansas, Friday, June 03, 2016, 13:18 (3099 days ago) @ Vortech
Seriously. I don't think I've had this much fun with a multiplayer game ever. Halo and even Destiny have this "hardcore" feeling to them. Overwatch is just a joy to play. The shooting mechanics aren't as polished as Destiny or Halo on consoles, but it feels incredibly balanced. There's no stupid grind (unless vanity items are important to you) and the micro transactions are much like Sterling Treasure and Req Packs (Random items) so don't bother wasting your money on those. But the game is totally worth $60. It's true the maps/game types are small, but DLC is suppose to be free (as of a December statement I think). Each game is typically quick, but almost always close. 75% of my games are down to the wire.
+ fun unique characters
+ quick games
+ it doesn't suck to lose
+ free future content
+ no (real) grind
- few maps/game types
- shooting mechanics could be a little better (it just feels like it was made for PC)
- cosmetic unlocks are random (If I'm playing Mercy, give me more Mercy unlocks)
Here's a game we lost, but was awesome last stand:

I really enjoyed the couple hours I was able to play the beta. If there are enough ps4 peeps playing it I might just pick it up.

I have it, been loads of fun not worrying about loot or grinding, just playing matches with the different characters.
It's weird not being able to zoom, or choose your loadout and movement is a lot slower for most characters then Destiny, but still pretty fun. Feel free to look me up on Xbox if you need a team (I'm "The Miniboss").
Also apparently it's a $40 game.
by breitzen , Kansas, Friday, June 03, 2016, 15:33 (3099 days ago) @ Durandal
The base version is $40
The limited edition is $60 (just some extra digital goodies)
Collectors edition is $129 (physical goodies)
The $40 version is only available for PC

lol. One of my main critiques is that is aiming system is so obviously built for PC. It does make you feel like you're horrible at aiming. It's why Tracer is so deadly, she's already so hard to hit. Probably why I perfer tank/support characters.
