+1 for using the fuel rats if you get stuck without gas. However, it's easy to avoid if you know the tricks. First, when you plot a route on the galaxy map, a solid line indicates you have enough gas and a dashed line indicates that you do not. If you don't want to run out along the way, one option is to get a fuel scoop but some stars cannot be scooped.
