Grasp of Malok - What's your perfect roll? (Destiny)

by Chappy, Arlington, VA., Thursday, June 16, 2016, 15:03 (3025 days ago)

The nightfall this week offers the best opportunity to farm for the "perfect" roll for Grasp of Malok. This is the highest rate of fire Year 2 pulse rifle, and a popular choice in the Crucible. For those of you farming the weapon this week, what "perfect" roll are you seeking?

Sights:
Red Dot-OAS: +14 Stability
Red Dot-OES: +12 Stability, +2 Range
Red Dot-ORES: +9 Stability, +6 Range, +4 Reload, +4 Handling
Red Dot-ORS: +9 Stability, +6 Range
Red Dot-ORS1: +6 Stability, +8 Range
TrueSight IS: +5 Stability, +8 Reload, +8 Handling
Sureshot IS: +2 Stability, +12 Reload, +12 Handling

Perk #1:
Partial Refund: Chance to return a portion of the magazine after an assist
Eye of the Storm: This weapon becomes more accurate as your health gets lower
Life Support: Kills with this weapon while critically wounded have a chance to start regenerating health
Danger Close: This weapon gains increased reload and handling when two or more enemies are in close proximity
Surrounded: This weapon gains bonus damage when three or mor enemies are in close proximity
Exhumed: This weapon gains improved range and handling for a short time after revival
Secret Round: Missing a shot from this weapon's burst will fire a fourth shot
Rangefinder: Aiming this weapon increases its effective range
Headseeker: Body shots with this weapon increase precision damage for a short time
Counterbalance: This weapon has increased stability (%8)
Outlaw: Precision kills with this weapon dramatically increase reload speed

Perk #2:
Perfect Balance: This weapon has extremely low recoil (+13 Stability)
Lightweight: When held, this weapon grants +2 character agility
Hand Loaded: This weapon is effective at an extended range
Fitted Stock: Increases weapon stability (+7)
Speed Reload: Reload this weapon quickly

Braced Frame: Increased stability (+24), reduced magazine size (-9)
Hand-laid Stock: Increased stability (+25), reduced range (-13)
Reinforced Barrel: Increased range, reduced stability
Feather Mag: Fast reload, reduced magazine size
Casket Mag: Increased magazine side, reduced stability
Injection Mold: Increased stability (+13), faster handling, reduced range (-13)
Smallbore: Increased range (+9), increased stability (+9), reduced magazine size (-6)
Oiled Frame: Faster reload, reduced range
Skip Rounds: Ceramic-jacketed rounds ricochet on hard surfaces. Their extreme density lets you carry more rounds in reserve. Added mass slows down weapon handling

Mutiny: This weapon deals bonus damage against Fallen Captains
Will of Light: This weapon deals bonus damage against Taken enemies
Sword of Aegeus: This weapon deals bonus damage against Vex Minotaurs
Hannibal: This weapon deals bonus damage against Cabal Centurions
Malleus Maleficarum: This weapon deals bonus damage against Hive Wizards
Disiplinarian: This weapon deals a small amount of bonus damage to Fallen enemies
Demotion: This weapon has a chance to stun Fallen Captains

Perk #3:
Guerilla Fighter: Increased accuracy, handling and damage resistance when shooting this weapon from behind cover
Third Eye: Radar Stays active while aiming down this weapons's sights
Spray and Play: Increases the reload speed of this weapon when its mag is empty
Last Resort: This weapon handles and reloads faster when the wielder is the last living player of their fireteam
Army of One: Quick unassisted kills with this weapon reduce grenade and melee cooldown
Glass Half Full: The bottom half of each magazone causes additional damage
Grenadier: Kills with this weapon reduce the cooldown of your grenade
Feeding Frenzy: Kills with this weapon increase reload speed for a short time

I was thinking about glass half full too (not that one has dropped yet), but it only increases the damage by 6% by the end of the clip. It's not enough to affect time to kill for crit shots (still need 3 crit bursts to kill), and I don't think it'll impact body shots either (but you might get a 4 burst kill to low armored opponents).

ORES/Counterbalance/Smallbore would be great: +22 stability, +15 range

I'd be happy with anything in the last slot, though. If I can get an ORES/Counterbalance/Hand Laid Stock, I won't care what the last perk is :).

From what I remember, so this could be off.

With GHF, you can get 3 burst kills IF you hit two full crits bursts and then a crit/body combo. Smallbore works really well with GHF since it reduces mag size, thus giving you more time in the GHF slot.

I'm told Counterbalance is required in order to use the term 'perfect'.

Its recoil pattern is such that it's not a necessity, and can be substituted for whatever you think will help your playstyle more.

EDIT:

It does move to the right, but crucially not much while shooting, and not enough to prevent a 3 shot kill.

EDIT 2: Just to be clear, I think that counterbalance is the preferred perk, and necessary for some pulse rifles, but I don't think that that particular gun requires it to be perfect, depending on your play style.

I feel like I'm missing something here...
What exactly makes Grasp of Malok so darn desirable?

I got one last night with Red Dot OES, Rangefinder, Grenadier, and a choice of Hand Laid Stock or Perfect Balance. Not the "perfect" roll, but pretty darn good. Took it into Crucible for an hour or so, and I'm totally convinced that it is inferior to the vendor Hawksaw in every significant way. Less range and stability, less impact. It has a slightly higher RoF and mag size, but the RoF does not make up for the lower impact. Technically, Grasp and Hawksaw can both 3-shot-kill, but the difference in impact means you need to land 3 perfect shots with the grasp to kill. Hawksaw is more forgiving, meaning you can get 3-shot-kills more often. The grasp almost always requires 4 shots.

So it has a slower average time to kill, and most perk rolls will also have less range and stability than the Hawksaw we can just go buy from the vendor.

Am I missing something?

It's fun to have the gun.

More importantly, this is a great way to build up materials. Tons of glimmer, weapon parts, armor materials, legendary marks, and infusion fuel. Plus you can get all of you primaries to 335 very easily.

Those three shots ate faster than 3 from the hawksaw. But, yeah. I'm mostly doing it just to have fun shooting stuff and gather spin metal , armor pieces, weapon parts, and infusion material.

I have a higher opinion of the gun despite having a much worse roll, but given how many I saw out there today, if it is really good a see a nerd coming.

I played with mine for two nights in crucible, and ran up against a bunch of Hawksaws. One guy consistently beat me... but except for him, I won almost all my Hawksaw/GoM 1v1s. Maybe on paper it's inferior to the Hawksaw... but in real play, not so much. :)

Maybe it's my roll, or maybe it just doesn't click with me for some reason, but I was doing way better after switching to my Hawksaw. I'm probably not the best judge though... Fast RoF Pulse Rifles have never been my strongest weapons. It's just not an archetype I do well with. I'm just a bit confused by the enthusiasm to grind for a weapon that is so similar (I'd argue slightly worse) than another gun that has been available at the vendor for 2 months now. No big deal, just curious how others are finding it :-/

I tried the farming for about 90 minutes on Friday. It was enough to get a couple of Grasps, and one was quite usable. The farming itself was actually pretty cool; after having done Omnigul the usual way a few dozen times, over the past year or so, finally having a modifier setup that allows you to kill her faster than Eris can say 'Destroy her!' is super-fun. ;)

Two runs before I quit, I remember saying to the guys I was playing with, "wow, there's almost no thinking involved here." So basically, I got my fill of stupid-fast Omnigul kills, got a fun gun to play with, and walked away. To me, that's the essence of a good day on Destiny.

I remember watching a video from one of the big streamers, when the farming for the Grasp first started (last summer?). I remember thinking, "yeah, I'll never be doing that - it looks super-hard, and super-boring." And I never did. If Solar Burn hadn't shown up right after GG was super-buffed, farming this Nightfall would have been hard, and probably boring. And I would have skipped it.

But it wasn't hard, and it wasn't boring (at least for a while), and so I tried it. And I got a pretty cool gun.

I bought the vendor Hawksaw soon after it became available, and tried it out in crucible. It really wasn't my style; I was getting creamed. So I put it in the vault. For whatever reason, GoM feels better to me, and melts opponents. So I'll keep using it. :)

I'm tired.... The farming has been epic and some of the most fun I've had playing the game in recent times. I'm still debating on giving it a go again tonight, but we'll see. While I still haven't gotten my "perfect" roll, but man, these are good.

Guns I'll keep:
#1, ORS, Counterbalance, Perfect Balance/Hand-Laid Stock/ Glass Half-Full
#2, ORS, Counterbalance, Perfect Balance, Spray and Play
#3, ORS, Counterbalance, Speed Reload, Glass Half-Full

Guns I'll try:
A, ORES, Headseeker, Perfect Balance/Braced Frame, Grenadier
B, ORES, Counterbalance, Feather Mag, Grenadier
C, ORS1, Eye of the Storm, Smallbore, Glass Half-Full

Other goodies,
- 100's of legendary marks
- 1000 Armor Mats
- 1000 Weapon Parts
- 1200 Spinmetal to turn in for Rep
- 50k in glimmer or more
- 2 Bags under my eyes

That braced frame version should be pretty good for short/mid range. The synergy between the reduced mag size with braced frame and glass half-full should be great. plus the extra damage if you miss a crit w/ head-seeker will be pretty nice.

I got 2 that I'm keeping:

Red-Dot ORES, Headseeker, Perfect Balance, Third Eye
Red-Dot ORS1, Counterbalance, Hand-Loaded (or Smallbore; can't decide if the slower reload kills it), Third Eye

I think I got 9 or 10 others that will act as infusion fodder. (I've got 7 left, 4 335s and 3 334s.)

It was definitely a fun experience, even though it's repetitive. The conversation is entertaining, and the thrill of "what'd you get this time?" didn't go away, at least in the two sessions I did this for.

First off, I had a blast playing with you two, as always. Thanks for the fun. :)

Here are my two GoM rolls that I'm toying with:

[image] - [image]

I also got 4 other infusion-fodder rolls (3x335, 1x334), and 4 bonds.

The other highlight, for me, was dropping another Vortimer-D, this time with Send It! It's just a Dirty-Blue (said in Sarge-voice) handcannon, but it has the highest impact of any gun in the game - same as the First Curse. I like it because something in me just enjoys playing vanilla Crucible with "anti-Meta" weapons, and a rare HC with barely any perks fits that bill nicely. Also I like hard hitting slow firing freight train guns. :)

My first Vortimer-D vs. the new roll from last night:

Your post highlights an issue I have with some of Destiny's perk icons, and a shortcoming of the cursor "hover" UI.

There's no way to know what trade-off perks you got in the middle column. Bungie gave a bunch of different perks all the same icon, and there's no way to tell what they are unless you mouse over them. Same deal with the scope icons.

These things should be apparent at-a-glance.

Although, in this case the other perk options are irrelevant, and I chose those screen grabs from the Ishtar App because they were the best combination of showing the overall perks and stat bars.

We couldn't get on for a while last night, and then when we did I was the only one who got Grasp of Malok out of 6 or 7 Omnigul kills.

My drop rate throughout the week was around 1 drop (grasp or bond) per 5 kills.
