Hence the "penny in the door" reference (too obscure?). Bungie decided just to remove the door completely in the April Update, since it wouldn't open correctly when Xur was there, forcing them to move him to the tower. But apparently they moved him anyway. :P

Penny locking is actually for holding a door closed. It's a prank played on roommates and in college dorms.
You get one person to lean on the door to get it to bow slightly. Then you cram pennies between the door and the frame above and below the knob. When the leaning person lets pressure off, the door is firmly stuck shut. Them you wait for the person inside to realize they are stuck and have a good laugh.
