I think sometimes people focus on the stories too much. The Witness was great because of the puzzles and just walking around the island (in my opinion, obviously). Hyper Light Drifter is good because it's moment to moment mechanics are fun.

I think story can be and is important for games, but not all games, and it's not the end all be all even for games with a story. Destiny is the perfect example of this. Even as the story was at launch, it was still a fun game.
