A collection of games made by ex-Bungie folks. (Destiny)

Courtesy of Kotaku, who provides a nice list and summary of games made or in development by ex-Bungie devs.

Not sure I like the "Bungie devs leaving a sinking ship" angle the article starts with, but I don't know if the data points to abnormally large numbers of devs leaving Bungie or not, so I guess maybe it's not worth commenting on.

And they don't even mention people who went to AAA studios

Like Joe Staten. probably others. I don't know. Joe and Marty were both quite formative for me and I feel lucky to have met them both, many years ago when Halo 2 was being teased at E3. I was not expecting this link to take me on a feels trip.

Yeah, I guess I should have been more clear--the article explicitly talks about people that have left to make indie games. I never met anyone at Bungie, but I always liked listening to Joe talk whenever he was on camera in a ViDoc. He seems like a really passionate guy that cares and is really excited about the things he works on. The same with Marty.

Yeah, I was watching some of the ViDocs recently and I will really miss Joe in future ViDocs. Fortunately Marty keeps a decent presence with interviews and the like.

Or indeed the ones who left before Destiny.

Max Dyckoff is now at naughty dog, having worked on The Last of Us and Uncharted 4. He was an AI programmer.

And Josh Hamrick is now Sr. Designer at Bethesda

It's not necessarily the number of people who left, but WHICH people left. And why.

You're not wrong about that actually being the case, but the article explicitly calls out the high number of people leaving, which I don't necessarily buy. I'm not saying that it's not true, either--I actually don't know. But it seems to me like lots of folks move around throughout the industry; people just don't pay attention unless it's a big name like Bungie (and the big name people within that have left).

Bungie has over 700 people working for them now. It makes sense that with more employees, more people would leave them then when they had 20 people. If there's say a 5% turnover, then 5% of 700 is larger than 5% of 20.

I've worked in places with 10-20% turnover (the fast and loose life of advertising). With a company of Bungie's size, it's no surprise that this many Indie games are springing up.

But again, look at WHO is gone. People who have had a huge creative contribution to past games. Jamie. Marty. Paul. Joe. Marcus.

There's going to be impact when the heads of writing, music, design, and art all leave.

As for WHY they are gone…
