Initial impressions, it's even faster-paced than the last game. The available maps are super small (too small for Titans, even, which are only in one gametype), so you're never far from an enemy. A lack of enemy AI in two of the playlists makes it less pat-on-the-back-y, which is good, but might be too much for Titanfall 1 players. SMG is underpowered, AR is OP (beats LMG at all ranges).

Overall, kind of meh, but I'll stream gameplay anyway.

Also, the grappling hook is neat.

This is a big deal for me. The real benefit of the AI combatants was not to make things "easier" (although it did give under-skilled players a small way to contribute). The real point was that all that extra foot traffic and weapons fire gave Pilots a little bit of natural camoflauge against the Titans. One of the ways they balanced Titans with Pilots is that Titans would often have a difficult time spotting enemy pilots amongst all the contrails, drop pods, and foot soldiers scurrying around all over the place. On top of that, it all helped give the battles a feeling of epic scale that other shooters lack. One of the complaints that I've already heard from big Titanfall 1 fans is that the battles feel too small and too empty this time around.

The battles are super small (outside of the city map). The upside for Pilots is that Titans are super cramped. There is little room for them to move around in (to the point where my Titan is much better off on Autopilot). One map has a corner where there is a more open field for the Titans (without cover), but it's also super easy to pick off the Pilots shooting at you. I never felt afraid of a Titan in the center of the map, they have almost no chance to kill outside of accidental stomps if you get too close, and a Warlock Melee that's pretty funny.

That said, I don't dislike it, and the campaign is looking pretty neat, but I really hope there's more to it than small skirmishes (I did like the Bounty gametype, because it uses all corners of the map, even if the non-objective areas become ghost towns).

This is good to hear. Whenever I went back to Titanfall after a break I was always surprised how slow it felt compared to what I remember. Probably a mix of excitement/not using speed burn cards. After a match or two the flow was back.

The core of what made Titanfall great is very much there. I had two games this afternoon where I got on a roll (20+ kills) and got that absurd high I've only ever found with this game.

One new thing is the amount of risk vs. reward decisions. Do I jump out of my Titan and grab that core? Do I use my core ability to wipe out that Titan or keep it charged so I can deploy electric smoke in case I get rodeo'd?

Finally managed to put about an hour into the tech test on PS4. I have no idea what people are complaining about! This game seems to do everything the first game did, with some smart/fun tweaks to the old formula. Titan and Pilot combat are both just as much fun as I remember.

There are some obvious weaknesses to this release; matches are not always fully populated, there are some minor balance issues that need tweaking. But overall, the game feels rock solid and loads of fun.

I recorded a couple cool clips:

Titan Crush:

Titan Battle:

One flaw with the PS4 version:

As I said, I've been playing the Tech Test on PS4. There is 1 clear shortcoming to this version of the game: the DualShock 4 controller. Now I'm a HUGE fan of the DS4. I think it is the best controller ever made, with the possible exception of the Xbox One Elite (I think the DS4 still has certain advantages over the Elite). But there is 1 substantial drawback to using this controller to play Titanfall.
The placement of Sony's D-Pad is something that lots of people complain about. It is usually just an issue of comfort. But in Titanfall, it causes actual gameplay issues.

In Titanfall, you call down your Titan by pressing "Down" on the D-Pad. On the Xbox One, the D-Pad is placed in between both thumbs; closer to the left thumb, but still within reach of the right thumb. This means you can keep your left thumb on the left stick and use your right thumb to hit the D-pad. In other words, you can call down your Titan mid-sprint. This means, on Xbox, you can do stuff like this:

On PS4, because of the placement of the D-pad, there really is no convenient way to reach it without taking your left thumb off the left stick. This means that any time you want to call down a Titan, you need to stop moving, making moves like the video above impossible.

This is far from a game-breaking issue. PS4 players should still have loads of fun with the game. But if anyone has both platforms and is on the fence between the two versions, I would certainly consider this a tie-breaker. Personally, I'm going to pick up both versions of the game :)

Maybe it's just a casual thing, but I don't think it's impossible. Heck, it's easy to hit down on the D while running. Use the same quick Hook method that I taught you to use so that you can shoot enemies while getting the Rez in Trials (index on the D, middle finger on L2). Quick and snappy.

I tried that actually. I could see some people doing ok with it. Personally, I have to shift my hand quite a bit to reach my index finger down that far on the D-pad. Makes it very difficult to do while keeping my left thumb steady on the stick. 3 out of the 4 times I tried it, I interrupted my run anyway. Plus, it is nowhere near as fast for me as using my left thumb (or right thumb on the Xbox). So if it works for you, that's awesome. Not so much for me.

Like I said elsewhere, I hope they're more lenient with the remapping. Down on the D being such a pivotal button feels weird for me (I feel like it should be Up, if anything, but ideally Touchpad).

Worst case scenario, you can just remap the controller through PS4 (the next update makes it really easy to activate and deactivate your custom mapping on the fly).

Yeah, that will be great. The other thing I'd like tor remap is the tactical ability for Pilots. I use Bumper Jumper, which moves the Tac Ability to the X button. Ideally, I'd like to have that on one of the bumpers so I can easily use my zipline without taking my thumb off the right stick. Again, going "claw" would make that possible, but it isn't ideal.

Titanfall 2 *might* have ruined Destiny PvP for me

by CruelLEGACEY @, Toronto, Monday, August 22, 2016, 12:41 (3015 days ago) @ ZackDark

Spent a couple more hours with the Titanfall 2 Tech Test last night, and had an absolute blast. Speedracer and I teamed up and played a few amazing games together. We eventually ran into connection issues and couldn't get the game to keep us in a lobby together so we jumped back over to Destiny to play some Iron Banner.

Wow. Destiny has never, EVER, felt so slow to me before. I don't mean in terms of the pacing. I mean I could literally feel the delay between what my fingers were doing and what I was seeing on screen. I could almost count the individual f-r-a-m-e-s as they ticked by. It felt awful. I know Titanfall 2 runs at 60fps, while Destiny runs at 30fps. I've jumped back and forth between Destiny and other 60fps games. I've always noticed the difference, but never to such a degree.
This is totally the kind of thing you adjust to over time. If I play nothing but Destiny for another month, I probably won't even remember the difference. But come October, there's no way I won't be playing a good chunk of Titanfall 2. That might push Destiny into a "PvE only" zone for me, at least for a while.

Besides the technical stuff, Titanfall 2's combat sandbox is stellar. There is a complete lack of the "I call bullshit!" moments that many of us experience so often with Destiny. I never got shot from around corners, I never saw other players teleporting or lagging all over the place, I never turned down a hallway to find myself facing 4 enemy snipers all hard-scoping on my position. Win or lose, there was zero frustration.

Best of all, playing Titanfall can be like experiencing a non-stop highlight reel. Game after game was filled with epic moment after epic moment. My PS4 DVR decided to stop working last night, so I unfortunately lost all the footage I tried to save. You'll have to take my word for it ;)

I had an incredible sequence last night where called down my Titan and went toe-to-toe with an enemy Titan, finishing him off with an execution move (I ripped off his Titan's arm and shoved it into the cockpit :D), then turned around in time to see 2 more enemy Titans land in front of me. I spotted a battery pack on the ground just in front of my position (new mechanic... battery packs can be used to recharge your Titan's shields, but you need to risk leaving your Titan to claim them). So I jumped out to pick it up, and managed to kill one of the enemy Pilots who was about to jump into the Titan he had just called down. I climb back into my Titan, and now I'm battling the 2 enemy Titans (1 manned, the other running on auto pilot). The street we're fighting on is narrow, so the 2 enemy Titans are struggling to shoot around each other, which gives me a fighting chance. The auto-piloted Titan is in the front, and I'm able to take it out. Now I'm facing the lone enemy Titan, who has a lot more armor than I do at this point. But by now, my Titan's super ability has charged up, so I unleash this massive laser-beam-from-hell out of my chest and take the enemy down to critical health just as my Titan finally gives out. Both the enemy Pilot and I eject from our crippled Titans. I jump up and over him, coming down behind him. He's making a break for cover, so I launch my grappling hook... it misses him, but grabs the ground right beside him, pulling me towards him and allowing me to finish him off with a drop-kick to the back.

It was awesome, and every match is filled with moments like it. October can't come soon enough :D

Shame we never got to play together. Titanfall 2 suffers from the same issue that plagued TF1: It's fun in 20-minute bursts, but gets soooo boooooring afterwards. Being in a group would definitely mitigate that, although the fun doesn't change a whole lot because of the spawn system that throws "cooperation" out the window.

It was worse when you'd hope back over to Reach after playing Black Ops, believe me. The thing is that movement itself is much faster in Titanfall too, so it's not just a framerate thing. You get adjusted to twitch reflexes so much that you get some anxiety because of Destiny's slower movement. For ejemplo, this is me playing Destiny after a lot of Overwatch, where I quasi-Main Lucio:

The problem is that there is almost no spawning system. Your spawns are seemingly random, so while you always know why you died, usually it's because the game put you into a bad situation unfairly. That said, you come to anticipate that pretty quickly, so you start to get rid of feeling comfortable. You are never in a defensible position (unless your whole team holes up in one corner of the map, which is surprisingly effective).

It's fast-paced and frenetic, for sure. not sure that I would immediately call that "epic". But whatever gets your jollies, man. I will say that the animation for Titans (both AI and player-controlled) is stellar, so a fight with one definitely feels like a movie.
Gunplay itself outside of them is like a much more limited Black Ops 3, but the guns themselves behave somewhat like Destiny (A higher TTK than usual for a game this fast-paced, which is actually great), so it's a weird happy medium. If only it didn't get boring so fast.

Also, I wonder if the enemy AI can kill you, or if they can only bring your health down to a certain degree. I've never seen them kill anyone. They tend to run into walls and look surprised more often than not, so that's not improved at all over the first game, and has me slightly worried about the campaign (though I'm sure they're more than likely deliberately stupid, and are intended solely for point-farming, just like the first game).

My PS4 DVR decided to stop working last night, so I unfortunately lost all the footage I tried to save. You'll have to take my word for it ;)

It's weird. Maybe it's the game engine, but Call of Duty and Titanfall both cause wonkyness with the game DVRs. You don't notice it as much on Xbone because the clips are 30 seconds, but anything longer and the DVRs freeze up and have a 50% chance of not even recording your clips.

That's why I opted to stream instead.

Titanfall 2 *might* have ruined Destiny PvP for me

by CruelLEGACEY @, Toronto, Monday, August 22, 2016, 14:32 (3015 days ago) @ Korny

Not for me. I can play Titanfall for hours by myself and never get bored. Like Bungie's Halo games, the sandbox is so varied that I see something I haven't seen before in almost every single match. It also uses these "epic moments" to reward skill. The better you get at the game, the more amazing-looking stuff you can pull off. It's almost the opposite of Destiny, where playing well (or waiting long enough) is "rewarded" with a win-button super move. Titanfall rewards you by giving you the tools to do badass stuff that is difficult to pull off but feels amazing.

Yeah I remember going from Modern Warfare 2 back to Reach and having similar feelings. I think part of my problem is that I've been playing Destiny almost exclusively for 2 years now. I'm so intimately tuned-in to how it feels and plays. What's strange to me is that jumping into Titanfall 2 felt completely natural. Going back is where I really felt the difference.

I almost never run into that myself (compared to the 8-10 times per match that Destiny spawns me somewhere I shouldn't be). In Titanfall, even if I spawn somewhat close to the enemy, you are so nimble and mobile as a Pilot that I never have trouble moving to an advantageous position.

I like the stripped-down nature of the guns in Titanfall. I feel like there are enough options to fit most playstyles, but things don't get redundant or bloated the way most COD or Battlefield games feel. There is 1 weapon for each archetype, with enough unlocks to tweak it a little in each direction. Suite me great.

Also, I wonder if the enemy AI can kill you, or if they can only bring your health down to a certain degree. I've never seen them kill anyone. The AI can certainly kill you. If you're careless and let them swarm you, they can take you down. They are also a threat to Titans because your shields won't recharge while you're taking fire. So even when there is almost no risk of them blowing up your Titan, they will make you vulnerable to other more serious attacks.
And enemy Titans running on Autopilot can absolutely kill you as well. They're not as effective as most real players, but they're enough of a threat to take them seriously.

Could be that, but I also discovered that my hard drive was almost entirely full. Maybe a combination of the two? Either way, I'll make sure I stream everything next weekend so I can go back and pull clips.

I went to prestige 10 in Titanfall 1... Sooooooo gooooood

by Kahzgul, Monday, August 22, 2016, 15:10 (3015 days ago) @ CruelLEGACEY

I only needed to play TF2 for about five seconds to know the magic wasn't gone. I am really disappointed that Attrition isn't in the networking test though, because that game mode is absolutely where TF shines. Bounty was... *okay*... but not stellar. Felt more like a pilot vs. pilot PvP and oh yeah sometimes there's these other guys (who just happen to be the entire objective). Time trial in the training was great. God I hope they have more courses for that.
