1kys vs Longbow: Someone school me please (Destiny)
Finally managed to pick up a new Longbow from a Crucible package tonight after getting around 8 pairs of boots in a row for my titan. Mine dropped with the LongView SLR10 scope, Grenadier, Handlaid Stock or Reinforced Barrel and Outlaw. I took it into Iron Banner to do some field testing with it. After trying it out, I'm not really sure it's any better than my 1kys. It's supposed to have higher aim assist (felt the same as my 1kys) but not much else is different. They have the same impact and RoF and pretty much feel the same. The big thing I noticed is I only received 3 rounds per ammo crate instead of 4 with my 1kys.
With that said, why is this sniper supposed to be the greatest thing out there?
Nostalgia
Just like when I try to go and use my other y1 weapons and realize that they were only good back then before all the weapon changes. Like when my allfate used to two burst kill.

Tried taking The Messenger into Crucible. Tears were shed. And I haven't touched Hawkmoon after Year 2 came out. Things should live on as happy memories...

In a way it's pretty cool. You get this feeling of "I was there when...", which helps build fond memories. And it's not exclusive to games that constantly evolve, since I had the same feeling trying to go back to Halo 2 before they shut it down, and realizing that it was an even more terrible game than I had remembered. I also tried playing the SNES version of The Lion King, but quickly realized that I'd never be able to beat it again.
Good times.
The Messenger is still pretty solid
As is The Summoner, of all things. Tearing people to bits with it last night.

The big change to the Messenger is it can no longer 2-shot kill. It used to be able to 2-shot fairly easily (both shots could be less than "perfect" and you'd still get the kill). It's still a great gun in terms of range and stability, but a fully-shielded opponent will now take 3 shots to kill, which is a LONG TIME because it has such a slow RoF. It makes it an awesome weapon for team-shooting, because you can strip almost half an enemy's health in a single burst, but in 1-on-1 gun fights, you will almost certainly lose unless your opponent misses a couple shots.
Such a shame, given how freaking amazing it used to be :-/
I don't think that's it though
The year 2 version is different from the year 1 version though.

Longbow has more aim assist than 1ks.
That's part of what I'm getting at (Stats Listed)
I keep hearing how the Longbow is THE best sniper rifle in the game. Here are the stats from Planet Destiny

LDR 5001

Maybe I'm missing something. But these 3 are all pretty much the exact same right? Is the +12 aim assist from the longbow to 1kys really that good to make up for 1 less bullet per crate?

What about the recoil direction stat? Maybe people like the recoil on the longbow better?

Faster reload and more aim assist. The people praising it are probably the type of folks who obsess over the stats. And it could be the feel of the weapon, like with recoil. I like more vertical recoil, which it's the worst on.
I just recently got one to drop. Now I'm interested in trying it out to see for myself, but mine doesn't have a scope that I like.
I'll stick with LDR
Still more AA than a 1K, but 4 ammo per brick (I believe? Unless it's been nerfed?).
Eirene for me...
Aim Assistance of 21,
For Professionals Only.
Nice pic bro ;)

Way to be rude with that hot linking.
But those scopes suck!

The longbow is *slightly* better
You can get 4 rounds per ammo crate if you run both sniper ammo boots and chest. And it has ever so slightly faster ready time, and higher aim assist.
If all snipers have perfect rolls, the longbow is better. Not *much* better, but it is definitely better.
That being said, the 12 aim assist is the fundamental difference, which means that it still comes down to your perk rolls more than anything else. Only when faced with virtually identical rolls should you consider using the longbow instead of an LDR or 1kYS. In all other situations, take the gun with the best roll.
Longbow is a pretty blue. IKYS and LDR are ugly orange.
That's enough for me to favor Longbow over the others. :-)
This is the correct answer.

Whoa now. LDR is much prettier than 1KYS

Sure...
...kinda like how a Camaro is prettier than a Mustang - but why settle for one of those when you can have a Ferrari? :-)
Sure...
Mustangs come with the Crowd Control perk as a hidden perk.
Sure...
Doesn't hold a candle to a Renault cargo truck, though.
Boy, this escalated quickly

No, this Escaladed quickly
Heh
Never did see the point of "regular car" straight-line races. Though I guess it does line up with how much you guys enjoy NASCAR, so there's that.
Actually Im quite partial to a Mustang
Fun fact I learnt while checking my word usage: Though the word 'partial' can be used to describe both a bias towards something and a state of being divided, they come from two different roots - parcial and partiel, respectively.
Isn't learning fun?
