Coming back to Destiny. Any story to catch up on? (Destiny)

by Grizzlei ⌂ @, Pacific Cloud Zone, Earth, Tuesday, September 20, 2016, 00:53 (3079 days ago)

So I've been completely out of the loop with Destiny for over the past year and now more than ever I'm willing to give this game another chance. I'm not worried about the gameplay, that's solid, but what I'm really worried about is the lore and the narratives. Reaching out to fans I constantly hear that with The Taken King Bungie has really honed their storytelling craft once again. I'm wondering, is there any ancillary material like in the Grimoire or anything else that I need to catch up on to get caught up on the series to date, or am I all set just playing the games in the coming collection?

Bungie has not come anywhere close to honing that craft at all. Just the other day I made a post about how the "story" bar was literally lying on the floor, and Taken King maybe lifted it a foot or two off the ground. For the record, I loved me some Taken King. The characterization finally got a big leap in this thing, so that was a shining example of their writing being good. Its own self-contained story, while spotty, was alright I guess. Unfortunately, it mostly just planted seeds for Destiny 2 (not sure if you want spoilers, so I won't say how). Still loads of fun to play through with friends. And the Raid! It's so good (give or take one worthless section of it).

I'd say get it and enjoy it. And the Grimoire is always top notch.

I'd venture to say nothing of lasting significance happened in TTK that affects enjoyment of RoI. There's the whole "the Queen is dead, but maybe not" situation that I hope comes into the loop, but other than that, I think you're good, Grizz.

Will there be any threads from the former installment to the latter, or is Rise of Iron just a little sliver, totally self-contained, in a progressing universe?

That's kinda disappointing. A few meters off the deck is still a whole lot more exciting than having your launch aborted entirely, like the original story was for me.

Yeah. The story may leave you wanting, but the Taken King as a whole is fantastic. Oh, to directly answer your question from your first post, yeah, you're all set to just play and enjoy. Like you said, the gameplay is solid. It's a really fun game, especially with friends. I can't wait for the expansion tomorrow (though I'm not holding my breath on story content, but I'd like to be pleasantly surprised).

That sounds good enough for me! As long as it's obvious that the story is at least going somewhere then I'm game. Like, I truly want to love this series. Any excuse I can get to jump back in I'm going to take, no matter how slight it may be.

Thank you for the help, Avateur! Having come from Halo I was just worried I'd need to catch up on two trilogies of novels, two-years worth of comics, and hundreds of official forum posts just to comprehend the complexities of all Destiny has to offer.

My feeling on the story of Destiny is that they came up with a single 10-year story arc, and completely forgot that it also needed to be engaging moment to moment and mission to mission. It reminds me of the loot from Diablo 3. They planned out drop rates so that, 10 years on, you might still find an item you'd never found before, which of course meant that if you were playing for a couple of hours, you weren't going to find a goddamn thing.

That's how Destiny's plot is unfolding, except slower, because we're 2 years in and seriously nothing is had furthered the plot so far. We've had a couple of events, but they don't seem to have affected the world in any discernable way.

This time around, at least the weather is changing. I hope for more.

The Grimoire is very well written, and it deserves a game that lives up to the universe it has created.

There hasn't been any out of game materials you need to catch up on. No books or comics or anime series. You should be fine playing straight through. The only recommendation I'd offer is that you read through the 52 Books of Sorrow before starting The Taken King's raid. There's a great story about the Hive and Vex and the Traveler there that shows the vastness of Destiny's universe and frames the enormity of beating that raid far better than collecting your loot from the final chest does.

Books of Sorrow for sure, TTK did move things forward some.

TTK gave us better knowledge of the universe, some aspects of the darkness, and definitely a better understanding of the hive, but that was largely through the grimioire, specifically the Books of Sorrow.
