Slowly dipping my toe in the water... (Destiny)

by EffortlessFury @, Sunday, September 25, 2016, 16:01 (3073 days ago)

Hey all. So I never really finished up content from The Taken King and I'm trying to see if I can slowly acclimate myself to the game and find a way to enjoy it enough to see what I already own through. Maybe also decide Rise of Iron is worth the price at some point in the future. I played some patrol last night for a quest or two and I gotta say it seems like they made it more rewarding. Happened upon 4 public events in an hour by accident and brought home a lot of loot.

But can someone point me in the direction of a guide or several that tells me how to treat different gear from different expansions/updates, etc.? I remembered (a little too late) that you should maximize your light level before turning in engrams and then do one at a time to try to roll higher gear. That still stands, right?

Should I just trash anything from year 1 at this point? Too low of a light level to bother? Also would give me exotic shards for other purposes, no? Also, is there a good strategy of when to Infuse? I also have a metric crap ton of sterling boxes in my inbox. I should probably Infuse which ever gear I like from that and infuse it?

I also remember that the Gunsmith did weapon test things. Is that still a thing and is it worth doing? I forget why.

Sorry, super out of the loop. Thanks for any help.

I'm struggling too. I incorrectly thought that since we completed Year 2 with Moments of Triumph that we were leaving all 335 gear frozen at Year 2 level and not bringing them into Rise of Iron. In preparation for 'Rise' I cleaned up my vault alot and infused many exotics to 335ish thinking they'd be frozen and capped out. I wasted a LOT of exotic shards, which I don't have many of, unlike others.

I actually would have preferred it that everything was frozen like with Year 1. (I forget if Y1 gear overlapped into Y2 at all or not). It would have been easier for me if there was a clean break, now I feel like im in a gray area between Years.

Im not good at infusing and not good at getting rid of gear. Ive got a vault with a lot of Y1 gear in it that I can't seem to part with because of the memories. Ive got a problem.

As of now I haven't infused any old 335 stuff up. I have a clear separation between old Taken King time period gear and new Rise of Iron gear. It feels like a line I don't want to cross but at some point im going to have to? Maybe once I get into the 360-380 range? The problem is that right now at 346 I have a bunch of capped blue 340 stuff that I could use as infusion fodder

You need to earn legendary marks, get vanguard/crucible/faction packages, and buy new legendaries. Then you can go back to infusing those.

Yikes. Sorry about that. You should probably spend more time here. :)

Ugh, please don't say that. I mean, I get that you're annoyed that you wasted some stuff, and I'm sorry about it, but... they did that at the end of year 1 and I HATED it. I mean, ALL the stuff I liked was just immediately made (mostly) useless. Screw that. I don't ever want to do that again.

Not a problem as long as there's space. I still have a lot of my old raid weapons, and some of the too-good-for-their-own-good Y1 legendaries. The Devil You Know, Shadow Price, and a few others.

I guess I don't really understand keeping the old stuff separate. Do you not like any of it? Seems odd since that's apparently the stuff you were using previously. ;) Unless you're just waiting until you're higher level, so that you infuse it once instead of multiple times? That I understand - saves resources. Although I don't really bother doing it myself for some reason.

I spend quite alot of time here. I am pretty dense sometimes, but I don't recall it being mentioned very much. Where would it be featured? Its not like there is a Front Page or something...
I try keep up with the Weekly Updates. I don't remember it ever really being mentioned explicitly recently.

I didn't really like that my stuff in Year 1 was frozen. I think that was pretty frustrating at the time. I guess since that is what they did it before, that that is what I was expecting again. I should have clued in with the title update that was giving the Trespasser and a few other items above 335 that people were infusing with, but as I said before, dense. The game inside the game - infusing, leveling up, grinding marks, faction switching, item comparing/grading, etc. I'm not very good at and don't rank very high on my list.

I liked Y2 stuff very much, making it hard to part with. Yeah, I'm waiting until I can get to a higher level so I can try to infuse it once I guess.

Yes, there was an update fairly recently that did that, like within the last few weeks. The first one of the day gives 15 legendary marks and a legendary engram. And that's per character, so if you have 3 you could get 45/3 per day, if you have the time and are willing to pursue them. There's also a "small" chance for them to give an exotic. Not sure how small exactly, but it hasn't happened for me yet so I'd say it's small enough that you shouldn't count on it. Just a pleasant surprise when it does, I guess.

But can someone point me in the direction of a guide or several that tells me how to treat different gear from different expansions/updates, etc.? I remembered (a little too late) that you should maximize your light level before turning in engrams and then do one at a time to try to roll higher gear. That still stands, right?

Yes it does. Although I'm unsure why you would treat gear from different updates differently. At least as far as engrams are concerned, they're all the same. Taken King engrams will decode the same as Rise of Iron. And it's not like you can tell the difference between them in your inventory anyway. Now, some activities from the older DLCs that drop items DIRECTLY might still be capped at their old light levels (for instance, someone mentioned to me recently that Court of Oryx from The Taken King is still dropping things at 335).

Should I just trash anything from year 1 at this point? Too low of a light level to bother?

Well, I mean... technically yes their light level isn't good for current content. But that's been true for a long time and you haven't trashed them yet. And they're still usable in old content and Crucible (if you do that). I still have some of my old favorites. The only ones that I've felt OK getting rid of are exotics that I have year 2 versions of. In those cases, they're 2 free exotic shards, and I still have one to use.

I also have a metric crap ton of sterling boxes in my inbox. I should probably Infuse which ever gear I like from that and infuse it?

Yeah, go ahead and open those right away. They all start at 3 light so it's not like they'll be higher level if you wait. Just open them all, see if you like the stats/perks/look, and keep them to infuse up if so. Shred the ones you don't, they'll give you chroma you can use to put lights on the keepers. Pro tip on that: hitting the "destroy chroma" button (or whatever it's called) on those armor pieces will actually re-roll the color on them to a random setting for 100 glimmer, so you can change them to a color you like for a fairly insignificant price. Just something you might not know if you haven't dealt with them much.

I also remember that the Gunsmith did weapon test things. Is that still a thing and is it worth doing? I forget why.

Yes, at least if you're currently below rank 2. Hitting rank 2 with him will start a quest for a class-specific legendary weapon. Hitting rank 3 will start the same quest for a class-specific exotic. Some of these weapons are quite good IMO (Tlaloc especially is monstrous) and there's no other way to get them. See here for info.

Hey thanks for taking the time to reply, very helpful stuff here :)

What I meant by treat gear differently, I meant how should I prioritize storage, dismantle, etc. I rarely look at my vault and realized I have a bunch of low level blues from year 1, for example. I could use those as other characters but frankly the loot wheel turns relatively well at that level so perhaps its best not to waste the space that way? And yea, you have a point about Crucible. I may keep a few year 1 Legendaries/Exotics for that reason, but I barely play Crucible so it may not be worth keeping many.

I also have a metric crap ton of sterling boxes in my inbox. I should probably Infuse which ever gear I like from that and infuse it?

Only reason I wouldn't open them all now is storage space. But thanks for the destroy advice, I was wondering where the reroll mechanic I'd heard of was.

I think I JUST got the quest for the Legendary one. Neato. Thanks for the advice :)

Ah, OK. Yeah I definitely wouldn't worry about keeping old blues, unless you're starting those new characters RIGHT NOW. Not worth taking up vault space otherwise.

Which class are you playing? Just curious which weapons you'd be looking at.

Good. The legendary you get is good, with one caveat, but the exotic.... ooh boy. That one's unquestionably NICE.
