Understanding how Destiny will play

I've started to get the idea in my mind that Destiny is going to be a lot like Borderlands. You'll have a big open world with a story thread and lots of side missions, building your character along the way, finding awesome guns, etc - but with public events and a persistent world.
Those last two are not just throw-away features. I remember when people said the iPad was "just a big iPhone"; it's basically true, but that means a lot more than it sounds like it means. Public Events sound fun, and the persistent world will be interesting to see (assuming you can't ruin it for everybody else by being a turd).
This is NOT meant to diminish the excitement for Destiny in any way, nor is this any kind of intentional flame bait. Totally sincere.

I agree, I think the more we learn about Destiny the more we'll realize there is a reason Bungie is calling it a Shared World Shooter aside from just marketing. What we've seen so far I want to play and according to Bungie we've barely seen anything.

I think that's mostly fair, but we have a few pieces we don't really know much about.
1. The Tower and communal spaces
2. PVP and how that work
3. Mission structure/Exploration
For 1. we know that Destiny will have some true communal spaces, more along the lines of PSO than borderlands small instanced areas. Number 3 comes from statements that bungie made about wanting to give players reasons to explore new areas. Borderlands is so focused on the missions, that exploration is a pretty empty experience when you aren't on one.
Number 2 is the big one. Borderlands competitive gameplay was... non existent? Bungie is hinting that there's lots of cool stuff in Destiny for that, and given their pedigree I believe them. Plus, the shared world nature of destiny can lead to some really cool stuff.
Finally, I think destiny is going to feel really distinct from borderlands mechanically. Borderlands focuses on a player getting really high DPS/health, and dishing out/taking tons of damage. Destiny characters looked more nimble, and their powers gave big damage spikes that you wouldn't see in borderlands.
I've always kind of seen destiny as the unholy mashup of Halo, Borderlands, Dark Souls, and PSO. As a concept that really works for me :).

Yep. I'm expecting something like Borderlands - the over the top zanyness + a bit of Mass Effect + a good helpin' of Halo.
Basically, what more could you want in a game! :)

Actually picked up Borderlands 2 to play with my dad because I've heard the comparison before and wanted to make sure I was well versed.
It's also doing a great job of selling my Dad on Destiny way ahead of release.

I don't know, if true this is going to be very disappointing. I don't recall anybody ever saying anything like 'Myth will be very much like xxxx' or 'Halo looks a lot like yyyyy'. Most of Bungie's games were kind of their own thing that other later games were compared to, not the other way around. The ones that weren't (Marathon being compared to Doom) were at last compared to groundbreaking good games, rather than the bland garbage that is bored-er-lands. If you are inspired, shouldn't you at least be inspired by good shit?

Oh, come on, the first Borderlands might've been in the boring side, but Borderlands 2 is damn good once it catches momentum.
Also, Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep could be a standalone game and still be a success. </obvious hyperbole></don't care>

Really? Nearly all of Bungie's game's were compared to other games. Myth was just Warcraft with no economy, Halo was just Tribes for consoles, Marathon was just doom with a story etc.
Inevitably these comparisons don't end up panning out. While at a high level Bungie games have a ton of similarities, they always end up with hosts of mechanical and design points that set them apart. Scores of little innovations are the Bungie signature, not having crazy high concept ideas.
In many ways, Destiny's crazy social connectivity/ shared world elemenents have the potential to be a bigger single innovation than anything they've done previously.

Bingo. In one sense, if you boil every game down to it's basic concept, there are probably only a handful of games out there. Differentiating between them is about execution and evolution. How well does it deliver on the formula, or combine existing ones? In what ways does it take that formula to the next logical step, or leap-frog entire steps for something totally new?
And FWIW, I enjoy Borderlands 2. I played the first one briefly, but remember shelving it at some point fairly early in the game. For some reason, 2 has captured my interest intensely. I am enjoying the story, the side-quests, improving my arsenal, discovering the world... and I'm not compelled to grind. I'm just naturally progressing through the ranks without much care for what it means, other than sweeter loot.
Haven't done anything with multiplayer yet, but I'd like to at some point.

I've been saying since the official reveal that Destiny looks like a Halo-skinned Borderlands. And to this day I haven't seen anything that really sets it apart. Hopefully it will have fewer may-mays at least.

One difference I've picked up from the short time I've played BL2 and you know, the none of it I've played, but watched, of Destiny.
If BL were to have all the guns in the world, it looks like Destiny will have all the awesome guns in the world. I have a sinking feeling every time I find a gun chest in BL because I'm thinking "great, 4 most likely mediocre things I don't need but have to pick up, compare, and then sell".
I'm thinking, more like hoping, that the "loot" in Destiny will be less crap you are looking to sell and more likely to find a way into your goto arsenal.
Oh and the gameplay they showed at E3 definitely appeared to capture that awesome kinetic shooter nature that defines a "Bungie Shooter" as they say. If they get the movement and pew pew to have that "feel", then it will definitely stand well apart from BL.
That said, it's all conjecture. I'm just hopeful. Can't wait to see more and I hope it helps allay your concerns.

You pretty much nailed how I feel. I do think the comparison to BL is impossible to ignore and is even in many ways apt, but from what I've seen (and played of Borderlands) Borderlands is a lump of coal, lots of potential but not always a lot of fun, and Destiny looks like a diamond. They both start out the same way, it's how "polished" they are that's important.

I kind of have to agree, but i really am not sure how the social system will work out, the single payer system looks easy and with this there will be enough content, but for social play i wonder.
