Yaaaaaay! I've been hacked! (Destiny)

by CruelLEGACEY @, Toronto, Monday, November 21, 2016, 13:38 (3016 days ago)

Just wanted to give you all a heads up that my PSN account has been hacked, so if you see me online... it isn't actually me. Hopefully I'll get it sorted out quickly.

Do you have any idea what weakness, if any, allowed this to happen?

No idea. I received an email from Sony at 4:50am saying "your account email has been changed". The email included a support link, which of course results in a 404. Go Sony!

Uncommon Common Sense: Make sure not to type in any personal info onto any link that's emailed to you unless you verify the URL.

PS. Your password game is weak. I would know...

Probably his elite level TF2 play made him a target

Haha, half joking but maybe that "knee to the groin" got under an enemies skin?

A few years ago I unlinked Credit Cards as payment methods for my online gaming services, switched to pre-pay only and I try not to keep any funds loaded to my accounts.

Hope they stay away from credit cards and/or Destiny characters!

You probably used the same password as someone on adult friend finder. Tens of millions of accounts got breached and their passwords leaked. Probably added to the brute force tools available.

All sorted out.

Got my account back. As you were :)

If you can, try to send Sony more info on that phishing mail

Just a reminder, Sony now has two factor authentication.

Sony has two factor authentication now, so remember to turn that on for better general security.

I've heard literally dozens of stories like Cruel's from owners of either console (among almost every other service in existence). If somebody figures out your password, and you don't have 2FA enabled, there's nothing to prevent them from having free reign of your account and any funds attached to it.

Source: I worked on the FIFA team at EA. at least 75% of all "user account/funds compromised" support tickets were from people playing on Xbox (although, I don't know how that percentage matches up against platform sales)

But then you have to give your number to sony, and companies don't give two shits about your data privacy.

Fake email address, fake address, and prepaid mastercards for me. Only the companies I get utilities from know my real residence and phone number. Even my car payments go to a PO box.

I used to get no junk mail at all, until I registered to vote. Now I get shit all the time. That's it, I'm moving.

My Xbox account was hacked, along with many others. My game history still shows FIFA even though I've never played it. Pretty eff'in ridiculous that microsoft can't remove that from my history after confirming that my account was hacked.

Here's my support forum post about it;

Sony's 2-factor auth is SMS based?

That sounds awful... Do they give any reasons for not using an authentication program?

Considering that I feel like strangling a Microsoft employee every time that I'm forced to go through their authentication, I'd say that SMS is definitely the way to go. Though I haven't updated security settings since the last time that I was forced to...

Really? Dunno if I'm just too used to it since Amazon, Google AND Discord also use it, but I'm not bothered at all by it. Except when trying to use the 360 Smartglass app on my phone. That thing can die in a fire.

Microsoft is the worst, and a big reason I don't have an XB1.
