I wonder what the record for pre-orders is for a new IP.
I actually was wondering the same thing when I read that

I quickly did some searches and really couldn't come up with anything solid for the current "new IP pre-order record". I checked out VGChartz and the only Destiny version (US only) that is in the top 40 pre-orders is the X360 version and that's only just over 33k units. But, it's also a year+ out for all we know.

I would imagine they intended their statement to be all versions together which would probably make it quite a bit higher on the list. But yeah, it is still quite a ways out so I would imagine they mostly mean from market research they've done.

Yeah, same here. I even wonder if he's referring to what Activision specifically has seen on their previous new IPs, rather than an all-inclusive world record.
In either case, I suppose Destiny's doing well compared with past new IPs. The list of new IPs which have had both a giant marketing budget like Destiny's, AND the strength of a reputation like Bungie's behind them, is probably pretty short. Actually, if rumours are true, none of the previous contenders would have even met the marketing budget qualification. :)
