Destiny 2 beta updates just as slowly on PS4 as D1 did (Destiny)

by Kahzgul, Saturday, July 22, 2017, 00:34 (2769 days ago)

So there was a 1.2 GB patch to the Destiny 2 beta today, apparently. From what I can tell, it added a "preorder now!" splash screen and selectable item to the director.

But I take umbrage with the fact that Bungie has apparently still not figured out how downloading works on the PS4. This patch did not download in the background at all. I was at work until 11:30pm, PST. When I woke up my sleeping PS4, it had to "prepare for download" for 20 minutes. FOR THE BETA. Then it had to run the download, which took another 8 minutes. Then it had to apply the patch, which took another 2 minutes. Meanwhile I've been getting Horizon Zero Dawn updates for weeks that happen while my system is asleep and I just turn it on to a brand new version.

Figure it out, Bungie!

This is the same problem D1 had with patches, and it sucks. I really, really expected Bungie to sort this crap out for D2, and I'm very disappointed that they didn't. If this teeny tiny beta takes 20 minutes to "prepare" I can only imagine how long the full game will take. An hour? Two? I do not want D2 to turn into "patch day means I'm not playing the game at all tonight" like D1 was. That's not fun at all. Especially when every other PS4 game I own seems to be able to download in the background just fine while the PS4 is asleep.

Please, Bungie: Call Sony, ask them how to make background patching a thing, and then make it a thing!

I don't know what to tell you, but D1 does update in the background both on PS4 and XB1. After seeing this I went and turned on my PS4 and the D2 Beta had been updated as well.

It's a weird thing that affects persistently-online games, I've noticed. Usually it works, but if you want to be absolutely certain that it'll update while you're away, then anytime an update releases, go to the PSN store online and send a download to your PS4. It can be anything: a theme, an avatar pic, a ShareFactory template... As long as you manually get the PS4 downloading something, it'll pick up on the update as well.

That tip, while useful, still relies on the end-user to know an update was released.

I experienced the same thing as Kahzgul: I got home yesterday and turned on my PS4, went to play the beta, had to wait quite a while for the update to download then finish.

The way the PlayStation does background downloading means that if you play every day it won't download in the background. It's a ridiculous decision but it's been that way since the PS four launched. If you leave your console in sleep mode for multiple days it should pick up the background downloads of patches.

But my PS4 always downloads Horizon Zero Dawn updates in the background/overnight. And that game's been updating like crazy of late. Maybe once a week? Same with No Man's Sky updates, which are bigger, but far less frequent. Destiny, on the other hand, has never once downloaded in the background for me.

It also doesn't work 100% of the time. I tried to pre-load the Beta this way, but when I got home from work it hadn't even started downloading.

I've encountered a ton of fail to update problems (even with manual updating) since the last System update. I had to delete and re-download the D2 Beta in order to update and clear the version check.

Weird. I was able to pre-load the beta just fine by manually instructing my system to download it while I was at work. It's only the "automatic" background downloads (and seemingly only Destiny's) that don't happen for me.

Weird, but neat tip.

One thing just occurred to me:

Destiny logs you out for "inactivity" if you put the console to sleep while playing. This throws up a screen that requires the user to press X to acknowledge that they were disconnected. I wonder if the presence of a screen which requires user input prevents the console from quitting the game for background updates?

If that's the case, I can pretty easily test it by manually quitting the game before putting my console to sleep and seeing if that solves the issue.
