Mankind Divided was pay to win. That's a category that I can never support, as evidenced by the fact that despite my Burning desire to play a new Deus Ex, I skipped out.
Munky and I had a chat today about Destiny's cosmetic only microtransactions. I still think they are bad, and make the game worse. However I might be able to chill out a bit. I'm not supporting them at all ever, but it might not have to keep me away either.
If eververse has pay to win though, Des2ny will get the same treatment as Deus Ex.

Well darn. Was too much to hope for, of course. :(

I'm curious how you feel about KoL's pay-to be better?
by Kahzgul, Sunday, July 23, 2017, 15:43 (2767 days ago) @ Cody Miller
In Kingdom of Loathing, the game is free. Each month you can pay $10 to get a special, powerful item that will only be for sale for that month. This is what they do in lieu of a subscription service. Also, the items that you can buy each month are tradeable (everything in that game is tradeable, actually), so there's a robust in-game economy that revolves around buying and selling the items-of-the-month, holding some for months or years, and reselling for millions more than their initial price.
I should mention that while the items of the month are not required to "beat" the game, they are incredibly powerful, usually have unique properties no other items in the game have, and sometimes even unlock additional content.
Anyway, how do you feel about a system like that?

Care to elaborate? I think it's a neat alternative to a subscription service that doesn't prevent f2p players from participating.

I'm sorry - have you seen evidence of any OTHER behavior from them with regard to microtransactions?
I don't know how they spent that money. I'm sure it went back into supporting the game, but I wouldn't say players saw any evidence of that. I don't feel like the launch of Eververse significantly changed the way they supported Destiny.
FWIW, I'm not saying it didn't change, just that those changes weren't directly noticeable by the end user. I don't think they necessarily need to be, but it'd probably help more folks be okay with it if they were.

That wasn't what I asked. I KNOW we don't know how the money was used - that was part of my point. My question to Avateur was "do you have any evidence that they used the money in a way that did not benefit users?"
The answer to that question is (as you've stated, sort of) "no" - because there's no evidence in ANY direction, really. And I'm fine with people saying "I don't know how that money was used" and even "I wish I knew how that money was used", but not so much with "obviously they aren't going to use the money to benefit you, lol". That was really the only point of my post.

Technically, any money from the DLC taken as net profit is not benefitting users, because it's going into bank accounts instead of being spent of the game. I would say it's 100% certain that they did not spend all the DLC money on the game. The question is how much. It seems like a lot given the unsubstantial nature of many updates, as well as some of the events themselves having microtransactions!
Maybe we should start thinking about Microtransactions as a stock purchase, and the content we are given free in return as the dividends.

That seems like a totally unreasonable way to look at it, since it means you're a total freeloader - getting dividends without actually buying any stock.

I'm dipping my toe in with minimal info, so correct my ignorance. When they started the Eververse purchases, weren't they talking about it in a video how money earned from the transactions would help fund events like Sparrow Racing League and other like events? But as far as I can remember, all we got were 2 seasons of SRL. So did the money go to other places or did they just not make enough money to support other free events? Age of Triumph? Not really content, but it's something.

We don't really know where it went. Presumably, things like Crimson Days, Festival of the Lost, and Age of Triumph were all funded with microtransaction fees - but we don't know any details.

Fair enough. I wasn't trying to be argumentative. Just pointing out that I guess I can sort of see how someone would look at Destiny 1 and feel like microtransactions weren't beneficial to the game. That's probably any unfair assumption. Even as simple as it seems, I bet the Age of Triumph stuff was a real pile of work. If that was funded from Eververse, does it mean that it wouldn't have happened without Eververse? I dunno, none of us do.
At a certain point, you either take Bungie at their word that Eververse is directly funding the live team, or you think they're liars. I don't think it really gets us anywhere either way, to be honest.

Sure, almost every other game that uses them does that, why would Destiny be different?
It makes sense too,
More Players in game-> More chances to hook large spenders -> more money. Long term engagement and content drops are pretty key.
Microtransactions, consumeables, etc align developer incentives player and developer incentives in a game like Destiny in a postive way"
