I like it! (Destiny)

by cheapLEY @, Sunday, July 23, 2017, 19:59 (2767 days ago)

Just finished playing the strike with Kermit and Canecutter (and Ottermack in the party). I forgot to bring my mic back home from my parent's place, so I just listened while they discussed the game. Mostly stuff that's been said here already, and I won't be saying anything new, but here it is:

All I can say is that I like it. It seems like they're delivering the things I care about, mainly interesting encounters for PvE with story reasons for doing things. It's obviously too early to tell how those things will truly pan out, but the stuff we've seen so far is great. I loved the story mission, and the strike really is great. I love the art style. Kermit said they managed to make it look completely different while still managing to look like the same game, and I think he's right. During the story mission I was struck by the lighting in particular--it just looks great.

I understand everyone's concerns about perks and player movement and loadouts and all the technical stuff, but I've ignored about 98% of that stuff anyway. I never paid much attention to my weapon or armor rolls, much less tell you which ones are good or bad. I understand those who do and can, but that's never been me. I just like shooting aliens in their dumb faces, and Destiny 2 feels amazing to play, and that's good enough for me. I'll never dive into the technical side, the less I have to think about those things the better (which is why I like the new subclass trees!).

Rolling auto rifle and scout rifle at the same time makes me really, really happy.

I'm totally sold (as if I wasn't already), and I'm eagerly anticipating September. If I'm lucky, maybe I'll get through Breath of the Wild by then.

P.S. The cursor in the menu feels weird. There's my "gripe."

My gripe is that the mission dialogue can be pretty bad. "We're walking into the light. I think it's a metaphor!"

The new AI during the strike gives me some hope. Seems like a push in the "more interesting" direction, at least.

Having a Silent Hero is still a major failure imo.

You didn't find her to be an Ordis rip-off? ;)
I found the execution a bit weak, especially given how over-the-top Ghost is now.

Totally. I don't get why Bungie thinks that giving our guardian a voice is such a terrible thing. It won't destroy the immersion!
I'd love for them to do a Titanfall 2/ Horizon Zero Dawn hybrid where you have a couple of seconds to reply with a "Brain, Heart, Sarcasm" response...

Oh, sure, but I enjoy Ordis.

All of the dialogue in Destiny, with the exception of cayde and zavala, is weak. I don't blame the actors, exclusively, but there's a lot to be desired from the dialogue here.

Having a Silent Hero is still a major failure imo.

I am hoping that guardian voices still aren't recorded yet.

Doesn't seem likely. For a September release they'd have to practically be going gold right now.

Even if we take into account the fact that the pipeline is long enough to make the beta build a couple of months old, the ship has almost certainly already sailed on whether or not D2 guardians are voiced.

The question is whether or not that was deliberately kept out of the beta build, but is in the game, or whether it just doesn't exist.

My bet is on the latter given the way late D1 DLC handled the issue.

Mine too, unfortunately. For better or worse (I think worse), Ghost has basically become the voice of our Guardian. He does all the talking to Vanguard leadership and whoever else. It doesn't really make a whole lot of sense, I don't think, but at a certain point I just wonder if it's just what they know. That's how Halo worked, too, 99% of the time. Cortana did all of the talking for Master Chief too.

They did a good job having player characters speak throughout ODST. Noble 6 was, however, a step back by only speaking in a number of cutscenes in Reach...

I guess that's just another reason that ODST is such a shining gem among Bungie's history...

I actually think the dialogue is pretty good. It's too early to say, but I haven't gotten the feeling they're using dialogue to spackle over the gaps in the plot the way they did in D1. The introduction of a Golden Age (speaking) AI is intriguing, and I'm assuming that she gets a proper introduction in the full storyr. I've thoroughly enjoyed the interplay between her and Ghost, not to mention being pleased that there are now a variety of lines that can be said.

Why did you stop playing Destiny 1 then?

Shooting aliens in their dumb faces felt good in that game too.

Sure. But I did that for 300 hours. It's not like I played very little Destiny. Not having internet at home makes playing an online only game pretty hard . . .

At the end of the day, it wasn't worth lugging my PS4 around all the time to play.
