My family's thoughts on the Beta (Destiny)

by Oholiab @, Monday, July 24, 2017, 22:15 (2766 days ago)

We've had a lot of fun playing the Beta! Here are some random thoughts and observations from the Oholiab clan.

Mrs. Oholiab...
...is very confused how Zavala's bubble can let people in but keep projectiles out. Come to think of it, how DOES that work? I came up with a not-so-convincing answer about permeability based on velocity, and she loves me enough to let me get away with it.

Isaac... aka crazymoose117
...has a newfound love for Titans, bless his heart. He's taken to calling the Force Barrier wall "Donald Trump" as in, "I'm deploying my Donald Trump!" I'm pretty sure he never switches away from Sweet Business.

Miriam... aka WildgirlMLK
...has yet to play, but was really engaged watching the opening cinematic and first mission.

James... aka Your Accomp1ice
...still loves being a Titan, and has his own affinity for Sweet Business. He's generally uncertain about the weapon slot changes, but he's really excited to get into the lore, especially as it relates to the Fallen. He really wants to know more about their House, so I hope the game does not disappoint him there.

Senior... (in no particular order)

-the Inverted Spire strike has so much verticality! I'm a sucker for sectional changes in my first person shooters, I guess, but the level design is captivating. I can't wait to see what other levels have in store.

- I get to carry two hand cannons. Enough said. Well, not really: the weapon slot changes have really thrown me for a loop. I was HC/sniper/machine gun - all the time. I'm not sure what my elemental weapon should be, so I default to another HC. I'm not saying the change is positive or negative in this sense - just different.

- That said, I agree with BeardFade's post earlier in that I feel like I never get to use my sniper rifle in PvP, and when I do, it feels really weak for a "power" weapon. I suppose I'm just not very good with it, but I want to use what I enjoy. Thankfully, I do feel like I get to use it more regularly in PvE.

- I also agree that I prefer 6v6. I think it's because of my style of play - I'm a mid-range, defensive, live-to-fight-another-day sort of player, but in 4v4 I feel like I need to be more aggressive and competitive. The weight I have to pull is increased from 16.5% to 25%.

- However, my PvP stats are SIGNIFICANTLY better in D2 - and I play as a Hunter. How is that possible?! My guess is that the HCs in D2 have more impact at a greater range, but that's just a theory. Whatever the case, my Hunter actually feels more powerful from mid-range.

- As a Hunter, I found myself reducing Mobility and increasing Resilience every chance I could.

- I have yet to get used to having another ability. It's a lot for me to think about, and I haven't figured out how Dodge fits in to my style of play. I'm looking forward to seeing the other options on the upgrade tree.

All in all, we're looking forward to the release and all the (hopefully) fun missions and side activities. We missed the opening of the Farm on Sunday, so we'll be looking for some Sherpas to acquaint us with the soccer field and other distractions.

It's totally reasonable as an answer. There are plenty of non-newtonian fluids available NOW (cornstarch and water make the simplest, but more complicated ones make 'liquid armor' that is light and flexible until a bullet hits it - at which point it becomes rock-hard). Google 'non-newtonian fluid' for cool videos, or 'liquid armor' for fun science.

My family's thoughts on the Beta

by Dundre, Norway, Wednesday, July 26, 2017, 07:08 (2765 days ago) @ Claude Errera

It did not look good for the Guardians that once held the light. After the cabal had run them out of the tower, they had lost almost everything. Their weapons were broken. The Speaker was silenced. The Travelers influence was subdued. But, luckily the space magic of the mighty Titans was still at large, because the main source of their immense power was secured in their new base. The towering presence of a giant iron clad farmer, with a plow attached to his sparrow was reassuring. He spit out the straw he was chewing on, and adjusted his sombrero. It was going to be okay, he said. They had found good farmland. As long as they had cornstarch they would never surrender...

Besides, they had a pretty nice hamster wheel.

Fun post! Skipping the top stuff because I have nothing to say other than it was neat. "Deploying Donald Trump" is hilarious.

Every assist counts as a kill now, so the K/D ratio of games is significantly increased from D1, and is also no longer a zero-sum game. This inflates everyone's K/D, but I think it's a good change to make more people feel successful rather than like they can't improve.

- As a Hunter, I found myself reducing Mobility and increasing Resilience every chance I could.

Same here. Mobility felt almost useless in pvp. Still, we know they rebalanced the whole game several times since the beta build was first set up, so things will almost certainly feel different in the real game. I wouldn't place too much stock in this right now.

- I have yet to get used to having another ability. It's a lot for me to think about, and I haven't figured out how Dodge fits in to my style of play. I'm looking forward to seeing the other options on the upgrade tree.

I ended up using dodge as a refresh button for my throwing knife. Actually dodging with it was far less useful, I found. It needs to be on a dramatically faster cooldown. I also felt like the titan Donald Trump cooled down significantly more quickly than the hunter dodge, which makes no sense at all to me - the Donald Trump absorbs incoming fire and instantly reloads your guns for quite a while, while the hunter dodge dodges (barely) once and either reloads your guns once or refreshes your melee once. It's like if the titan shield lasted for only half a second. I really hope this changes in the final build.

All in all, we're looking forward to the release and all the (hopefully) fun missions and side activities. We missed the opening of the Farm on Sunday, so we'll be looking for some Sherpas to acquaint us with the soccer field and other distractions.

Me, too. Did you go and explore the strike area? It was really fun to try and get around that whole map.

ok - that explains a lot. I usually walk away with a lot of assists in D1.

Raga took Junior and I on a tour at the beginning of the strike, crossing the Vex milk using the Pikes, and we had fun exploring quite a bit of that initial spawn area.

If you read the fine print, you have to do the dodge near an enemy to activate the recharge. Otherwise, it's just a plain dodge and you've used up the dodge charge. This frustrated me because I'd actually have to check if it did indeed recharge my melee.

The wall that reloads your weapon can also be shot over. The barrier wall is just a wall.
