My family's thoughts on the Beta (Destiny)
We've had a lot of fun playing the Beta! Here are some random thoughts and observations from the Oholiab clan.
Mrs. Oholiab...
...is very confused how Zavala's bubble can let people in but keep projectiles out. Come to think of it, how DOES that work? I came up with a not-so-convincing answer about permeability based on velocity, and she loves me enough to let me get away with it.
Isaac... aka crazymoose117
...has a newfound love for Titans, bless his heart. He's taken to calling the Force Barrier wall "Donald Trump" as in, "I'm deploying my Donald Trump!" I'm pretty sure he never switches away from Sweet Business.
Miriam... aka WildgirlMLK
...has yet to play, but was really engaged watching the opening cinematic and first mission.
James... aka Your Accomp1ice
...still loves being a Titan, and has his own affinity for Sweet Business. He's generally uncertain about the weapon slot changes, but he's really excited to get into the lore, especially as it relates to the Fallen. He really wants to know more about their House, so I hope the game does not disappoint him there.
Senior... (in no particular order)
-the Inverted Spire strike has so much verticality! I'm a sucker for sectional changes in my first person shooters, I guess, but the level design is captivating. I can't wait to see what other levels have in store.
- I get to carry two hand cannons. Enough said. Well, not really: the weapon slot changes have really thrown me for a loop. I was HC/sniper/machine gun - all the time. I'm not sure what my elemental weapon should be, so I default to another HC. I'm not saying the change is positive or negative in this sense - just different.
- That said, I agree with BeardFade's post earlier in that I feel like I never get to use my sniper rifle in PvP, and when I do, it feels really weak for a "power" weapon. I suppose I'm just not very good with it, but I want to use what I enjoy. Thankfully, I do feel like I get to use it more regularly in PvE.
- I also agree that I prefer 6v6. I think it's because of my style of play - I'm a mid-range, defensive, live-to-fight-another-day sort of player, but in 4v4 I feel like I need to be more aggressive and competitive. The weight I have to pull is increased from 16.5% to 25%.
- However, my PvP stats are SIGNIFICANTLY better in D2 - and I play as a Hunter. How is that possible?! My guess is that the HCs in D2 have more impact at a greater range, but that's just a theory. Whatever the case, my Hunter actually feels more powerful from mid-range.
- As a Hunter, I found myself reducing Mobility and increasing Resilience every chance I could.
- I have yet to get used to having another ability. It's a lot for me to think about, and I haven't figured out how Dodge fits in to my style of play. I'm looking forward to seeing the other options on the upgrade tree.
All in all, we're looking forward to the release and all the (hopefully) fun missions and side activities. We missed the opening of the Farm on Sunday, so we'll be looking for some Sherpas to acquaint us with the soccer field and other distractions.
