Streaming Sonic Mania Today! (Gaming)
It's finally here, guys! Gonna celebrate by streaming as much of Mania as I can. There's a good chance I'll play some other Sonic games, too.
I've started a Mixer here, and the show will begin soon. Drop a view if you like(spoilers, of course)! But I hope you won't be watching, because I hope you're PLAYING!
Have fun out there, guys!
The coolest ones seem to be the new ones.
Also you're really good at Sonic.

I don't have a lot of nostalgia for Sonic (I played 2, I think it was, on the Genesis that was at my grandma's for some reason--never did beat it), but I think I'm going to grab this on my Switch when I get home. The price is right and the reviews are good, so what the hell.

Thanks for the support! Saw a couple of views come up and I tried my best not to die. XD
Once I get the hang of everything here, I'll be even better. Had to take a break because I just realized I was starving to death, but I'm back on now. Mania going on, probably switching to Sonic 4 in a bit.
Best reviewed Sonic game in 15 years.
Best reviewed Sonic game in 15 years.
That surprise cameo of Nack, Bean & Bark clinched it.
XD
It's good!
I don't even like Sonic that much, but this is a great game. At $20, it seems well worth the money.
I'm not far at all (I just finished Studiopolis, which is an amazing stage), but I'm enjoying the hell out of it.
It's good!
It's good, but…
The graphics. You have a game that outputs in 4K on the PS4 Pro, and you make low resolution pixel art! This drives me nuts. The pixel art should be colorful and detailed for at least 1080p. But no. Retro = low resolution. It's a good looking game but it would have been mind blowing if they had actually USED the resolution they were afforded.
The sprite rotation also looks like shit, with aliasing and huge quality drops. Technically that's how it would have looked on a 32X, but we are running on modern hardware for fucks sake. Sprite rotation should not look like ass.
Better than you remembered it. That is how you do a retro game. Even Ron Gilbert admitted for Thimbleweed Park that they added high quality scaling to the sprites even though it wasn't technically correct, because "that's how you remember it in your mind".
Use the fucking hardware, Jesus christ. It's such a shame for really great efforts to be soured with bad conceptual decisions.
It's good!
You have a point, but that does lead to the main problem of this game: It's just a nostalgia trip. I do enjoy the game obviously, but the fact that it instantly became the highest rating Sonic game in 15 years isn't celebratory, it's a major issue, and solid proof that people can't move on from the 2D era. I may be biased as all hell, but even from an outside critical aspect, I can clearly see there have been some very good 3D Sonic games. Emphasis on SOME.
After so many years of people just blindly hating on 3D Sonic, the Team said "Okay, you know what? Fine--we'll make a game just like back when you were a kid. Would you like that? Goooood boy!"
And now we have an enormous condescending patronization for us. They keep the "buttons" and functions the exact same way as they did in 94, they kept the bad sprites and wall glitches and all the stuff we had back then, they put in Debug mode(wow, dude.) for the first time in a quarter century-- they even designed the Collector's Edition to be a straight-up Genesis game, for chrissake! System and cartridge included.
You've seen the messages in Studiopolis—Genesis Does, Lock-On, Welcome to the Next Level—the whole thing is clearly obvious: The Berries are strong with this one. That's the biggest problem with the American fanbase. To paraphrase and steal from a very amusing yet insightful individual: People may not want to admit it, but they don't really want the old Sonic games back. They just want to be 8 years old again, at their best friend's house playing couch co-op, sustaining entirely on pizzas and Sprite. It's been 21 years and people still can't move on with it, they still can't grow up!
So that's why the sprites look bad.

I actually haven't played a bad Sonic game. Even the bad ones are still pretty good, IMO. Worst was maybe Sonic 3D Blast on Genesis.
