How leveling works in D2 *SP* (Destiny)

by bluerunner @, Music City, Saturday, September 02, 2017, 20:16 (2726 days ago)

From a leaked manual. Progression to 260 level done through engrams and drops. Above that is done through weekly milestones. Milestones appear to be stuff like the Shaxx crucible bounties and completing public events.

*SP* Major spoiler + speculation here and in OP

Sounds about what I expected... More of the same. They want people playing more over time, and giving a treadmill of progression staged weekly in order to do it. Over both PvP and PvE.

So this has me wondering what the raid is like, light-level wise. I'm guessing it is doable partially at 280, and 290 is recommended for the last boss, with rewards that go between 290 and 300 (and roughly 5 LL's above where you are currently, probably with a 280 minimum)

Again, I am left questioning why they would release the raid so early. You will have 2 week's worth of weekly upgrades, assuming you finish week 2's weeklies previous to the raid, and will have to be pretty scientific about it. You have to grind and farm to try and do the raid at release time. For all of their "fixing" farming, to do a blind raid in a timely manner, it seems as though you need to do the opposite of what they are pushing as "fun" to get there.

I hope I'm wrong.

And please take note, most of the angst here is due to the raid release schedule. I expect to greatly enjoy the content leading up to that activity, I'm just annoyed at the timeline. And, due to the timeline, I won't be playing for "fun" as much, I'll be playing to gear up. That makes me a little sad.

Eh, while I find the grind stuff to suck and am not amused at that description of 260+, I'm not concerned. I feel like I'll end up doing the thing, completing the stuff, and getting the Raid when I get to it. And I have a feeling that my group will somehow manage to stay blind and unspoiled for the first run (even with DBO, playing nonstop, and maybe even taking a month). Probably won't help that I won't be buying the game until the following week, but whatevs.

Maybe someone will figure out the ultimate easy grind-it-out strategy. Some loot cave that Bungie missed and gets grinded out before they can patch it. Who knows.

No spoiler - Solution?

The solution to this is to get a group that wants to raid blind together and schedule the raid far enough out for everyone to enjoy the rest of the content in the meantime.

Largely I agree with both you and avateur.

I'm also in the situation that I'm fairly hardcore among my local friends (with one exception, you know who you are, heh), butI am also just past barrier of entry of hardcore with my online friends. I love playing with the "Flawless raiders" group on ps4... And I've found that playing one character pretty hard gets me to where I have fun with that group and can usually pursue things without over-playing. But the game is designed to be faster at progression if you're playing 3 characters. For example I was notably absent for some activities at the reef when trials was getting people 3+ etheric light and I was lucky to get one a week. The DBO guys I generally play with pretty much all run 3 characters, and a few times over the past few years I'm noticeably behind because of this. The only reason I was "raid ready" for the king's fall raid with everyone else was that I got massively sick and was off work for a couple of days around that time. Otherwise I never would have made the team.

So... maybe this is a personal problem... I could choose to run with a different group of people. Pickings seem slim on a west coast timeframe later in the evening. I really enjoy playing this game with the DBO players that are online about the same timeframe that I am, and the fact that a few local friends mix in with that group is a great part of that as well. But they are mostly more hardcore than I am.

Having the raid come out a few weeks later even would allow for anticipation to build amongst the playerbase. The reasonably dedicated fanbase (with more limited time) could keep up a bit easier. I think it would be a win for the overall playerbase, better for marketing and more regular "content staging", as well as keeping it more in line with the overall tone Bungie seems to be pushing -- "come play and have fun, but have a life outside of our game".

I probably just need to get over it. I don't mind the overall LL system, it's not perfect but it gets the job done. I think my problem is that because of the rate of progression to prep for certain events, it can fragment fireteams. And that's a shame.
