My Clan Saved My Life - Depression and Friends (Destiny)

by Mix ⌂ @, New Braunfels, Texas, Monday, September 04, 2017, 15:29 (2721 days ago)

Hey guys, I figured I'd share this here. It's my own story about how hard life can be and how, in the words of The Beatles, I get by with a little help from my friends.

Thank you for it if you watch, and know that if you're dealing with depression there are people out there who can help you. Count me as one of them

I was sad to see no replies on this — it's a message that should be repeated often and everywhere. If you're depressed, there's hope, and things *will* get better even if that feels impossible right now.

Depression blows. Makes me get fat, want to die, etc.

Friends and games have never done anything to counter that, actually.

I've been meaning to watch the video (and will likely post in on the front page once I do), but unfortunately keep forgetting to do so when I have time. I don't want to get into it here, but depression is something that my family's had to deal with for years, and (besides our loved ones, obviously) the people that we game with have all been a great way to put it on the wayside just enough, and it's definitely great to see that it is exactly what some people need to get through some of the real lows that can hit you...

As with Halo, so it is with Destiny (and many other games too I imagine). It is not "just a game", it is a social experience too, and for many of us the bonds created from that social experience run very deep and have the power to change lives.

I don't know you ..but I am happy to hear that you found your gamer family and that your friendships within that family helped you keep going when you were on the edge of giving up.
I have seen this happen for many others, myself included.

You can't always know what the person sitting next to you on the bus, or in line with you at the grocery store, or on the other end of the game chat, is going through. It may be something small, or something major ..and the major stuff isn't always obvious. Depression masked behind a smile, Bipolar masked behind laughter, behaviors of those on the spectrum that are easily misunderstood and misinterpreted, the irrational angry outburst of a customer who is struggling to keep-it-together after the loss of a sibling or parent or best friend, the single parent struggling to support his/her children, terminal illness hidden within while the person looks "normal" and healthy on the outside. How many of the people we perceive as jerks are just good folk suffering some hidden pain we cannot see?

Remember you are never alone, even if at times you may feel like you are. <3
