I'm still not entirely clear on what I'm supposed to do with a D2 clan, but I'll figure it out.

If you're in an active clan, you will earn additional engrams each week. Looking in-game, it looks like you'll get an engram for the following occasions (one reward per week)

• Win a crucible match with 2 or more clan members in the fireteam
  
• Complete the Nightfall with 2 or more clan members in the fireteam
  
• Complete the Raid with 3 or more clan members in the fireteam
  
• Get 7 wins in Trials with 2 or more clan members in the fireteam

As long as there's a single fireteam that completes those activities with the minimum number of clan members, everyone in the clan should get the rewards.

As a bonus, higher-level clans get better rewards during in-game activities:

• Level 2: Extra glimmer when looting engrams
  
• Level 3: Increased public event rewards
  
• Level 4: Improved reward from eliminating Cabal enemies
  
• Level 5: Increased chance of receiving reputation tokens from Nightfalls, Raids and Trials
  
• Level 6: Increased chance of receiving an engram when completing playlist activities with a clan member

And of course being in a clan means quick access to invite or join other clan members who are playing destiny - they appear in your roster on the right. Destiny at it's core is a social/community shooter, right?

Smaller clans will be at a disadvantage; it'll take more time to level up the clan and will probably require more effort to earn the weekly engram rewards. DBO XBL is currently at 33,750/100,000 on it's way to level 2.

Does it show anytime someone in the clan earns XP? I keep seeing 500XP popping up in the screen at random times, even when I am idle.

Ya know, I was thinking it a glitch, but I think it may be that. But, if it is, wouldn't be showing the Gamertag who earned it? (Unless they are showing offline)

It was some sort of effect from switching the clan from a D1 clan (which it was initially created under) to a D2 clan. When the conversion happened if you were a member of the clan group on the website but had not set it as your in-game clan (basically you had to come back after you had been accepted and flip a switch on the website) you were kicked out by the system when the conversion happened. I believe this was in the notes but not strongly emphasized so it was not hard to miss it.

I went to Hawthorne, but she doesn't have a clan banner for me. Is it because I'm only level 6?

Yes. You need to be Level 20.
