Question: are the adventure drops or story drops levelled? (Destiny)

by Funkmon @, Friday, September 08, 2017, 14:04 (2717 days ago)

IE, am I always going to get drops slightly better than me, or are they set? This is relevant to how me and Probablylast want to play. He wants to end the story ASAP. I get angsty about not doing all the side missions first.

Advice requested.

Even if they are.

We're going to throw them away after 2 strikes/story missions.

I'm just opposed to how drawn out they are. I'm sure they tell a great story, but I'm barely paying attention the entire time.

I pushed through the story, then did some of the early Power/Light 20 missions on EDZ. I don't remember getting any low drops.

Okay. If this is confirmed I'll wait until later.

I put some off (ones already active in my Milestone/quest log), and once I completed them, all of the drops were low. I think you should pick them up only while you intend to do them. Either way, some story missions have a level requirement, and adventure drops give loads of XP, if nothing else, IIRC (still worth doing once you're working for Bright Engrams).

Do you think I should wait until I'm done with story?

Since they're tied to story missions, I'd do them together.

Just Tested It

I just ran a PL (Power Level) 60 Adventure on Titan as a PL 208. The drops I got when I finished it were 208 or higher.

However, that particular Adventure would certainly have made more sense to play earlier in the story.

I get angsty about not doing all the side missions first.

I play the same way.

Yes, all drops scale to your level

by Kahzgul, Saturday, September 09, 2017, 01:09 (2716 days ago) @ Funkmon

Where does the scaling stop, you may wonder?

Vendor items: Stop scaling at power 200. Buying these is a great way to bump up your early power level. Don't sweat the glimmer, you'll have more than you need almost all the time.

Green engrams: these will stop dropping at power 200 and you'll never need to worry about them again.

Blue engrams: The highest I've seen one drop is 265, which was higher than my power level at the time. I expect they can still drop higher than that, though they're definitely more likely to be below my power level than above it since I hit around 220. This category includes most adventure and lost sector rewards.

Purple engrams: These scale, always. Of note: After you beat the game, certain quest chains end in awesome purple weapons being doled out. Those are given out at *dramatically higher power level* than you currently are. IE: When I was power 245, I got a power 272 exotic from a quest chain. Still my highest light kinetic weapon and I'm now power 265.

Exotic engrams: These scale, always. They're always higher than your current power level as far as I can tell.

Bright engrams: Always power level 10, it it's an armor item at all.

When completing activities:

- Rare Reward means a scaled blue engram.

- Legendary Reward means a scaled purple engram.

- Powerful reward means an overscaled purple engram or exotic engram (meaning much higher power level).

IMO: Finish the campaign first. Then come back for the adventures, lost sectors, etc.. The quests that open up after you finish the campaign often say they require 260 light, but they're actually doable (if hard) at less than that. I did the one on Nessus at power 220.

Also of note: When you beat the game, you're going to get a CRAPLOAD of engrams. This will dramatically increase your light level (I went from 165 to 220) which will make all those adventures and lost sectors and public events worth that much more. Another reason to beat the game first.

One thing I noticed

Looks like legendary hits a soft cap like rare does at 265. You can get higher from legendary engrams, but it will always be lower than your current power level. After that "powerful gear" and exotics are how you level up.

^^ This. Save your "powerful rewards" for 260+ if able!

Just be aware that lots of these are weekly prizes

So if you haven't finished your powerful reward things by tuesday, they reset. Also, Mine have been dropping at over 265 since I was light 244, so you don't have to wait until you're maxed out at 265 to get a good result from them. In every case they resulted in a nice overall boost to my light level.
