Long Indulgent, and worth reading. Also, Videogame reviews are generally bad and useless, and this is less so.

Nice review! Their podcast was pretty good, too, as was Polygon's.
The Planet Destiny podcast less so. Too much self-referential posturing and strained efforts to be funny, but I guess it wasn't intended to be a review per se.
The Kinda Funny podcast from September 11th was horrible. In years past Colin & Greg have never given Destiny a fair shake. Now Colin is gone. Greg Miller hasn't played enough Destiny to know much. Andre Rene had, but had completed about half of the D2 campaign so many of her "complaints" seemed premature to say the least. And this Andy Cortez guy--he quit D1 before the expansions hit. He thought this game was recycled and the art wasn't good. I couldn't believe some of the crap he was saying. SMH.

Yeah, Andre positioned herself as a big Destiny fan, but didn't sell me that she knew what she was talking about at all. Andy, geez... that was awful (the graphics look bad!? Maybe get your eyes checked Andy). Interestingly enough all I see on Greg's twitter feed is all D2. Clearly, he's enjoying it. I wish they had waited to do that show until the game had actually come out (they recorded on the 8th or 9th I think) and they had beaten the campaign.

It's tough. I thought that podcast was awful and premature, but because of the way their Patreon works, their biggest complain over the years is that their content is timely enough. Their patrons get stuff a week early, so the show is a week or more behind when it gets to the public. It seems like they're trying to compensate for that, but it always leads to half baked coverage in an effort to be timely.
They're whole system sucks, and I hate that because I generally like them as entertainers. It's why I mostly ignore their games coverage and just listen to their bullshit talk show (Gameovergreggy).

Glad you guys had a similar reaction. I'm also glad to hear that Greg is still enthusiastic. I always understood why he he stop playing. D1 was a difficult game to keep up with without a significant time investment. If you're in the business he is in, you almost had to make Destiny your thing, as did Destin Legarie at IGN. I hope for my sake and Greg's, that's not the case with D2.

Counterpoint: Skip.

I tend to like my reviews to be about the thing in question and not about the made up lives of five made up teenagers with attitudes. If the author wanted to use real world examples of how Destiny made him feel, he could have just used his own examples. Keeping track of these multiple fake characters and their little life stories and relationship problems was beyond annoying.
Was it different than the standard reviews that merely hit the standard review bullet points? Sure! Does different necessarily mean better? No. Not at all. In my opinion, you should skip the 7,000+ words of fake social situations and fake chat transcripts just read the Afterward. Or better yet, skip the whole self-indulgent slog all together and go read a good review like the one Polygon just put up. Gamesradar's was good as well.

Points taken. In truth, I graded the review on a curve having already listened to their podcast.
Glad to hear Polgon finished their review. Thanks for the link.

Videogame reviews are generally bad and useless...
As with all reviews, the goal is to find some reviewers with whom you generally agree, and then to pay attention to them far more than other reviewers. A good litmus test for this is if there's a game you love (or hate) that the general population feels the opposite about. Then compare reviewers to see if they jibe with your thoughts.

I used to believe this… but I would say that sticking to reviewers with whom you agree is like the echo chamber situation… you don't grow, and you aren't challenged. If anything, try to find really great reviewers who either love a game you hate, or hate a game you love.
The key is to find someone intelligent, knowledgable, passionate, and actually critical. Steer clear of almost anyone who reviews for a major magazine or site. In fact, steer clear of reviews at all.
Read games criticism.

Fair point. That's if you're looking to broaden your horizons though. Personally, I like a fan site where the forum users all coalesce around one company's games and then offer up tips about other games they like from time to time.

I agree with you, with a caveat.
Games are products to be consumed first and foremost. I'm going to read reviews from folks that I know generally have the same taste as me to figure out if I should drop $60 on a game.
The criticism part comes after I've already spent the money and played it.

This is kind of where the theories of games as art need to work. They are undeniably art, but if say, a movie doesn't give you what you want, but is nevertheless surprising in an interesting way artistically, it's still valuable as art, even if because of that you don't nessesarily enjoy it. Giving you not what you want but what you need. That kind of thing.
But if you don't find a game fun? Forget it. It's worthless.

Nice distinctions. I'd say it's not necessary to find critics who share your standards. It's more important to know what their standards are, even (or maybe especially) if they differ from your own. A good writer can communicate their criteria effectively in a single piece. I don't think reviews are useless just because most of them are.
