Games made by fans (Gaming)

Has anyone played a game that was part of a series, made by fans of the series that was truly good? We all know 343 were fans of Halo and gave us… well they gave us Halo 5.

I'm asking because after the initial thrill of being back to a solid 2D sonic game, I can't help but feel that being made by fans did Sonic Mania a disservice.

Playing Sonic Mania feels like playing a rom hack. The new levels are ugly. The old levels are ugly in their arrangements. The new music sucks. The old music is great because it was always great. It completely fails to take advantage of modern hardware and gives us low resolution graphics and horrible sprite rotation.

Any official games by fans out there that are good? Any unofficial games that are good? Let me know your thoughts and experiences.
