It's funny... As similar as they are, D1 and D2 are such different animals in a few key ways that I'm having a tough time comparing them from certain angles.

In D1, I (along with many others) found the core campaign to be so lacking that we latched on to any aspect of the game that we could. And for many of us, that ended up being the loot, along with the raid and 1 or 2 other end-game activities.

But with D2, I found the campaign thoroughly satisfying. Meanwhile, I'm far less compelled to dive deep into the loot/end game than I was with D1. What's funny is I can't tell if the reason for this difference comes down to the loot & raid in D2 being less compelling than they were in D1, or if it is because the rest of D2 felt so complete that I'm just not so desperate to squeeze every last drop out of the end game. Perhaps both?

All I can say for certain is that I'm having fun jumping online every few days and slowly making my way through the raid with friends, but at this rate I'll be surprised if I put more than 1/3 the hours into D2 that I put into D1, and I'm happy about that. So the suggestion of Bungie making a Destiny game without any form of long term loot/investment system actually sounds pretty cool to me.
