Voidwalkers: How ya feeling? (Destiny)

by Beorn @, <End of Failed Timeline>, Tuesday, September 26, 2017, 12:19 (2619 days ago)

I'm feeling very torn about the Voidwalker talent trees in Destiny 2. Several talents from the Slovabomb tree are nice (overcharged grenade to bring it in-line with a Pulse or Lightning grenade! Bloom!), but I can't justify using that one in Crucible because it's so easily defeated by enemies. I generally like the Hunger (Devour) tree with it's health regen perks, but the Super feels incredibly weak. Bungie seems to have dramatically reduced the damage and radius of the "standard" Nova Bomb. To wit:

Anyone else feeling this?

Devour is so good it’s worth using the crappier super. It’d honestly be worth giving up the super entirely. It makes you damn near invincible in a mob.

I just started my warlock and unlocked voidwalker. I agree. It turns me into a kungfu robot space wizard. I've done a couple of missions where I just meleed through the whole mission. Now I just need Winter's Guile.

"Crappy" Supers shouldn't be a thing

No argument with what you said. Like you, I love the rest of the Hunger tree. I guess I'm feeling that a Super shouldn't feel "crappy," which is exactly how the standard Nova Bomb is feeling to me these days. I would happily and trade it for an extra Grenade, Melee, and Rift, as I think that would have a lot more utility. Or bring back Tlaloc and let me forego using the Super for a great Scout!

Maybe there's a D2 exotic out there that I haven't seen yet that helps with some of this, but for now, I'm just kind of frustrated with my class. I feel like I'm in a "pick any two" situation with Voidwalker.

I'm totally there with you. No SUPER should feel crappy. Situational, sure, but I haven't found it situational either.

Could it be that you are just expecting the super to be good in PvP and PvE? It could be that the tree perks have been relegated to mostly PvE. Bungie has done it before.

If that's all you get, I don't think it would be unfair at all to make that a roaming super and give you three or four of those tiny novas.

Devour is glorious, but the tradeoffs with the weak Nova Bomb are really noticeable, especially considering that the Slowva Bomb has a secondary effect that is extremely useful in both PvP and PvE.

It's part of the reason that I never looked back once I got my Stormcaller.

You can make your Voidwalker neutral game way better with the Eye of Another World exotic helmet, but there's nothing that can be done for the Nova Bum-deal, since the Skull of Dire Ahamkara barely seems to work (we're talking probably a 3% Super charge per enemy killed with Nova Bomb).

My suggestions:

Attunement of Hunger

  • Devour. Kill an enemy with this melee ability to fully regenerate your health. For a short time afterward, kills restore additional health, while causing damage with Nova Bomb grants an overshield.
  • Feed the void. Hold L1/LB to consume your grenade energy to regenerate your health. Grants the Devour effect, and fills a small portion of your Super.
  • Insatiable. While the Devour effect is active, killing enemies extends its duration and recharges your grenade, while an airborn Nova Bomb lashes out at nearby enemies with void tendrils, weakening them for a short time.
  • Vortex. Nova Bomb creates a singularity which continually damages enemies trapped inside, and void tendrils pull nearby enemies towards it. Standing inside the Vortex reduces ability cooldowns.

While enemies in PvP can pull away from the tendrils by sprinting, enemies in PvE will have a much harder time. Bam, Nova Bomb is cool again, and synergizes with an aggressive playstyle.

I love attunement of Hunger. Devour is great, and while your videos were shocking, I can't say I've really noticed an issue in my own PvE play. That might be because I always ran the split-projectile thing in D1, so both versions of the new Nova bomb seem like a comparatively tiny explosion. I like the lingering-damage-field thing because it occasionally picks off a few enemies after the initial impact, which is better for the purposes of tanking with Devour than killing them all at once.

I don't bother with Crucible, so I have no experience to contribute there. I do feel like the people in your vids should have at LEAST lost shields.

I do wonder if playing this skill set too much is going to get me into bad habits, though. I may forget what cover is.

The explosion and damage are actually pretty significant in the real game, doing a huge chunk of damage to bosses and stuff. It looks like a joke there in Crucible though.

Anyway, yeah, the secondary benefits are enough to make me not care about the Nova bomb.

Yep. Been sticking with stormcaller for now.

What if it's not about power?

The thoughts I see here seem to be the same as my initial thoughts. In my Not-A-Review of the Beta, I mention how "safe" everything seems to be in design choice. Since then I've been working on why, as basically what we saw in the beta, is in the same case here.

W.I.P.

I think, and I'm exploring the idea right now, that things in Destiny 2 are less about power, like things were blatantly in Destiny 1, and more about mechanics. Look at the exotic perks in the gear we get. I think it safe to say that's much less about power, and more about how it changes the way things play.

I think there is more to this.

I don't know.

The 2nd guy really did jump above your Nova Bomb. I used to have a great video of jumping above a full size Vortex Nova Bomb on Widow's Court B. The damage drop off on things like Nova Bomb and Fist of Havoc has always been Kill ------------>Hurt->No Damage. You just got super unlucky that 2nd time. :(
