Now that D2's been around long enough for everyone to develop some attachments, rational and otherwise, I'm interested to hear which weapons are your absolute favorites. Not which ones are best, mind you-- I'm not tryna start a war here-- but which ones feel right, which ones make you smile, which ones make you cackle.

The question struck me when I first tried out True Prophecy, the FWC Hand Cannon. It's slow as all get out, it's an absolute pig to reload, and it's completely counter to my usual playstyle (which is generally Scout Rifles for everything outside of about 10m, Swords for anything closer, with a little helping of Linear FRs and/or Merciless thrown in there for good measure), but oh boy, it is just a boatload of fun-- not to mention being a real treat to look at. :)

So lay it on me: what're y'all enjoying most at the moment?

Maybe I haven't used it enough, but I'm not sure what the fascination with True Prophecy is. It just seems like a slightly worse Better Devils. I'm going to use it a bit more to see if I can find whatever everyone else seems to love about it.

When it comes to Hand Cannons, though, the Midnight Coup is just an absolute delight. I haven't nailed down exactly what makes it so good, but that thing just feels amazing to use.

I'm still struggling to find an elemental and heavy setup that I really love, though. I've been running Uriel's Gift, and that thing is awesome, for sure, but I don't necessarily love using it. Sunshot was my go-to secondary because that thing is a joy to use, but I don't want to run two hand cannons. MIDA Mini-Tool is fun, but I like having more range than that.

Primary:
- Eystein-D - A good heavy Pulse Rifle with another trigger pull of bullets vs Disrespectful Stare + it does a bit more damage with the last 6 - 9 bullets thanks to High Impact Reserves. Also its SD Thermal sight highlights enemies letting you target them through smoke / grenade effects / Supers.
- Song of Justice VI - A heavy Scout Rifle that also has a enemy highlighting scope and it will reload itself if you switch away from it. That’s nice.

Secondary:

- The Last Dance - This is the Vanguard version of the Omolon 3 burst Sidearm. I really like all the burst Sidearms and this one has Moving Target which gives better movement speed and target acquisition when aiming. It also has Extended Mag for three extra bursts. That’s pretty useful.
- Hard Light - A carry over from D1, it’s a good Auto Rifle and it has no damage drop off letting you strip shields from further away than usual. It has has the easy, innate ability to switch damage types which is nice.

Heavy:

- Morrigan-D - My favorite Rocket Launcher. Produced by Hakke, it has a a tracking function that helps prevent embarrassing misses.
- Flash and Thunder - A one shot Halo Reach style “pro pipe” Grenade Launcher that can blind groups of enemies making it great for giving allies time to kill adds or Majors with little risk to themselves.

Sunshot is literally one of the freebie exotics you can choose from Zavala. Maybe they switch depending on class. It it just a hunter thing?

No, you see the same 3 choices on any class. Sunshot, Riskrunner, and Graviton Lance.

*Sadly, I don't feel that I know Claude well enough to make the joke that should go here*

Or, at least, you see those 3 on your first playthrough. I'm sure plenty of people are aware of this already, but in case anyone isn't - if you start a second character, when you get to that point you'll only see 2 choices - the one you picked on your first character will be gone. And your third character will be left with 1 choice. Personally, I like this, because I think all 3 weapons are fun in their own way and this encourages (nearly forces) you to try them all, although I'm sure some people will find it annoying. I do wonder what happens if you then delete one of your 3 characters and start a 4th? Do you not get offered an exotic at all, or does it go back to having 3 choices?

Right. It’s pretty understandable that you might not have these.

I’ve only ever had maybe one Flash and Thunder. Eystine-D I think comes from Zavala so there’s just fewer chances to get that. Maybe three Morrigan-Ds. Literally one The Last Dance, though it is comparable to Last Hope that I’ve had several of. Now, Song of Justice VI is New Monarch and the jerks have given my Titan like ten of them while withholding any and all armor!

The Last Dance is a beast of a sidearm, probably the best I've found. It was one of the first legendaries I got on my first character and has remained a go-to. The funny thing is, when I started up my second and third characters, I found out that it's one of the starter weapons in the first tower level, along with Origin Story. They certainly didn't burden us with crappy weapons for that part.

Hand cannons won me over in D2 after being somewhat indifferent to them in D1. Right now my Hunter runs with The Old Fashioned in the kinetic slot and Sunshot in the energy slot; OF starts decapitating at mid-range, then switch to Sunnie for close-in work, shield busting, or cleaning out hordes. (The chaining solar explosions help a lot there.) I like the mix so much I stuck with Cayde's "Lucky Pants" armour so switching between the two is almost instant and there's a brief period of extra accuracy after, too. Power weapon's Show of Force to handle the loooong range firepower; hits like a freight-train, when I can hit with it. (Getting more often now with practice.)

I was thinking of taking that mix into the raid, but from what folks're saying that might not be the best mix. Might go with a scout rifle for kinetic and Hard Light for energy, which means switching the Pants out for a different exotic. (Celestial Firehawk or Knucklehead Radar, probably.)

My Warlock alt is running with an Omelon sidearm of no particular distinction and Graviton Lance. GL's fun too.

-- Steve's quite enjoying this version, at least now that the networking's mostly settled down.

FWIW, Sunshot is a pretty good secondary for a lot of the raid. Ad control is pretty critical for most of it, and Sunshot is good at that. I honestly don’t know how it fairs for DPS sections, but it honestly might be alright.

Origin Story - I've always liked the slower-firing auto rifles. Even during the times in D1 when they were supposedly nerfed to hell, I still felt like I did better with them. This thing is super effective and kind of puts me in mind of how those ARs felt in D1's early days.

The Last Dance - I mentioned this somewhere else in the thread, but TLD is the best sidearm I've found so far. The 3-round burst sidearms in general all seem to be pretty good, and they all work pretty similarly to each other, but TLD has more rounds in the magazine and I find that I can usually get 1 or 2 more kills in than with the others.

Side note: Sidearms in general seem better to me than they did in D1. I'm not sure whether they're actually more effective, or they just seem that way because they're no longer competing directly with shotguns and sniper rifles.

Skyburner's Oath - I got this thing pretty early on and I'm grateful for that because it's super helpful in Cabal areas. Being able to headshot Phalanxes without worrying about their shields is obviously a big advantage. It also feels like the focus-fire ARs from D1 (Suros Regime, anyone?) because of the way it switches to slower, higher-impact shots when zoomed.

MIDA Multi-Tool - I realize most people use this gun for PvP, but I don't do PvP at all and I still like it. It's not necessarily the most powerful scout rifle out there, but everything about using it just FEELS right. It readies and zooms in quickly, it feels like it's easier to land snap headshots, it doesn't waste much time reloading. I just feel quicker, more precise, more effective. It feels like the difference between a Miata and a run-of-the-mill grocerymobile, you know? I also love that the D2 version has high-caliber rounds again. Being able to spam those so fast, I'm often able to keep the mini-boss/majors in a perpetual stagger.

MIDA Mini-Tool - What's not to love? It kills quickly, range and stability are decent for an SMG, and the movement synergy with Multi-Tool works nice for my melee-focused Arcstrider. TBH though, I mostly like it because they kept the flavor text theme from the Multi-Tool going. :)

Riskrunner - This one's been discussed here a fair amount, so I think we're all familiar with it by now. It is pretty situational, but when it's good, it's VERY good.

Sturm and Drang - I really wasn't sure about these two at first, because Drang is the semi-auto type of sidearm, which I mostly haven't found compelling. But I have been using them in combination the past couple of days, and it is really nice never having to stop and reload (provided you keep their reload perks in mind as combat progresses), and Sturm hits HARD. It will OHK some enemies that I haven't been able to with other hand cannons.

Sunshot - Sunshot's so much fun to use, I would love it even if it were terrible. But it's actually super good against tightly-packed groups, and pretty decent against everything else. Also, am I imagining it, or do enemies killed by an exploding Sunshot victim ALSO explode? I swear I've seen it happen a few times.

Berenger's Memory - It seems like everyone's down on grenade launchers, and I have used a few that I didn't think were worthwhile, but I like this one. It does enough damage and has enough rounds to be useful (which I can't say for some other launchers), and I like being able to mine the ground between me and an over-eager melee enemy.

Valakadyn - While I like the slow-firing ARs as primary weapons, for an energy weapon I'd prefer to have something that's more of a bullet hose, and this is the best one I've run into so far. It almost feels more like an SMG.

Tarantula/Man O'War - The only 2 linear fusion rifles I've seen, and they're pretty similar so I'm just lumping them together. These are more or less a recreation of Queenbreaker's Bow from House of Wolves, which was one of my absolute favorite weapons in D1. Now, if they'd just remake Lord of Wolves...

Graviton Lance - I haven't yet decided whether this gun is actually good, but it has to be in the running for best sound effects. The noise it makes is just... hnngghh.

This gun is cool. I like how it shoots a long time before reloading. Very good for public events. I have moved down 4+ enemies at once before reloading with it.

Graviton Lance - I haven't yet decided whether this gun is actually good, but it has to be in the running for best sound effects. The noise it makes is just... hnngghh.

This was the first exotic I got during the campaign, I used it a lot. It seemed powerful during the campaign but felt slow once I got some better weapons.

I can't figure out the best way to use these. I used MoW in pvp and just whiffed every single shot.

Three Graves a pulse with lots of bullets and excellent range. I did really well with it in pvp this past weekend.

Linear fusion rifles are great for agggressively positioned targeting of high value enemies. No comment for PvP, but for PvE they are great for being relatively close in but dealing high damage and high stagger on big targets (Ogre, Colossus) or as snappy shield strippers.

I can't figure out the best way to use these. I used MoW in pvp and just whiffed every single shot.

I don't do PvP, but I can tell you that headshots are critical in PvE. They do diddly damage on body shots, and a whole bunch on headshots.

It seems to me that they'd be very difficult to use in PvP. I have no doubt they could 1-shot a player on a headshot, but the charge-up time would make it super difficult to do so. I'd probably prefer a sniper rifle for that use case (and I really don't even like sniper rifles, generally).

Three Graves a pulse with lots of bullets and excellent range. I did really well with it in pvp this past weekend.

I don't have one, but Malagate told me about it and it really sounds like something I'd like. I loved high-impact pulse rifles in D1, especially my God-roll Parthian Shot. I've only found 1 of them in D2 so far, and while it's OK, it doesn't have a long-range scope, which I feel is necessary for me on that archetype. Three Graves does.

I can confirm that enemies killed by Sunshot explosions also explode... and so on into infinity. :) I've melted a few high-density packs of charging War Beasts with only one or two headshots. So. Much. Fun.

Also, I feel you on the Linear FRs: not only do they dish out damage by the bucketload (assuming you can land the precision hits), they look, sound, and feel so good.

I bounced off of Sturm and Drang, but I also hadn't gotten a particularly good feel for Hand Cannon handling when I got mine, so I should really re-visit them. And I really should lay my hands on a Graviton Lance. PRs generally aren't my style, but I'll confess to being... intrigued.

Side note: just took my Nameless Midnight into the Crucible for the first time, and I imagine I'm late to the party here, but that thing just slaps people around in there. It's brilliant.

True Prophecy - just all around fun. That explosive shot makes the range even better so you can kill at almost scout rifle range.

Antiope-D - This thing often feels more like an auto rifle than an SMG with the amount of range it has. If you have struggled with SMGs so far, give it a shot, seriously can melt people at surprising distances.

Sunshot - If you like explosions you have no excuse not to use this gun.

Graviton Lance: Can't explain why it's good, it just FEELS really good.

Dubious Volley Wardcliff Coil: If you try and use this like a typical rocket launcher you will be disappointed. It's got short range, but if you learn when to use this rocket launcher it does massive damage. Like 3 majors during a prestige nightfall massive.

Shock and Awe: miss Plan C? Meet it's legendary little brother. Super slow charging, super high powered, it has an awesome perk that lets you switch to it quicker and charge quicker for a few seconds.
