Why is Desitny so bad at automatic updates? (Destiny)
by cheapLEY , Tuesday, October 03, 2017, 17:29 (2690 days ago)
It's the only game I own that just refuses to fetch updates.

Did you have the game running while in Standby?
I left Warframe running last night, and D2 updated automatically. Sammy had D2 running while her PS4 was asleep, and D2 did not update automatically.
From now on, when an update is scheduled to drop, be sure to close the application before you put the console to sleep, and see if that helps.

Yeah, I always close Destiny. There's no benefit to leaving it running. It doesn't ever seem to help, though. :/
Not a huge deal, I guess, it's just annoying.

Dang, I was hoping that it would be a good clue as to why persistently-online games don't update on their own very well.
I guess the next best thing is to do the tried-and-true trick of sending something from your download list (free theme?) to download from a browser.
Not a huge deal, I guess, it's just annoying.
Indeed.

it's a big deal when you live in the country and can't play for 2 hrs when you find out that it didn't update. if it would've updated while you were at work, it wouldn't be a big deal.

I hate this as well, but I have a theory. You know how you just put the PS4 to sleep and then the next time you log on you get that dialogue box that says "you were logged off for inactivity, press X to continue."? Well, I think the game code prevents it from updating while a dialogue box is on screen. So stupid. Please assume that when I put my PS4 to sleep that I intend to log off as part of the process.
I quit destiny two nights ago before putting the PS4 to sleep, hoping any update would happen automatically (based on my theory). But no, when I launched it last night it went straight away into updating. COME ON, BUNGIE. PLEASE FIX YOUR GAME. DAMN. How the hell does an always online game suck so hard at being always online?
Sorry we missed you!

I hate when that happens. At least it was relatively small, unlike the expansions. Regardless, we managed to get to Culus before disbanding last night. If there is a spot open today, youre welcome to join!
If you can’t get the gang back together tonight, I’ll be happy to fill in.

I see some replies about how missing the automatic updates prevented people from playing for a few hours. This came as a little shock to me as I figured most people had high speed options in their areas, unless you're in the desert or somewhere as desolate. Obviously financial decisions/barriers influence your speed, but I wonder how many may not have high speeds in their areas.
I currently have 100 Mbps DOWN and around 20 MB/s UP for around 60$ a month with Spectrum (formerly TWC). I am located in Northwestern NC. Granted, my PS4 never gets over 30 on its little speed test, it is a lot more consistent than my DSL days.

Once again, I think my update was smaller than others'. This one was about 51MB. It took a few seconds to download. But some people have said it was a multi-gig update for them.

Definitely a possible factor, and it's happened on other updates as well - there's been some discussions about it around here before. Thankfully, I always seem to be one of the people with a 40-50MB download rather than multi-gigabyte.

10-ish mbps for me
by Schedonnardus, Texas, Wednesday, October 04, 2017, 13:16 (2690 days ago) @ TheeChaos
that's if the wife isn't watching netflix at the same time.
I can get 20-30 mbps tethered to my phone. but i have to put my phone in the bathroom above the mirror to get those speeds, and then I'm without my phone.
Auto updates are nice, b/c they are usually done before i get home.
This latest one is no big deal, since its like 50mb, but last time was 500mb or something. I ended up tethering to my phone, downloading it, and then switching back to my home internet.

I have 500 down and 150 up. That small update last night still took nearly 30 minutes. Sony’s online network just plain sucks.
PS4 Hotfix 1.0.3.1 ~ 51MB | + PS4 System Update 5.00

The PS4 Hotfix 1.0.3.1 is 50.85MB (or 50.55/51.55/51.85MB I forget precisely)
The Bungie Hotfix was compounded with a significant PS4 System Update. Update 5.00
This system update took a while to download (although only 357MB according to the .pup file on their website)
This PS4 update also spent quite a bit of extra time installing compared to some other system updates and required 2 reboots that I remember.
I noticed for me, the Bungie Hotfix seemed to install itself a little differently to my system I believe. Instead of stating "preparing to download" and then "Installing", in my case it Downloaded fairly quickly and spent quite a lot of time with the stated status "Copying".
(This last part might be normal and I just don't pay that close of attention normally, however it sure seemed different this time for some reason)

Never saturated by a PSN download, though. IIRC I see 250Mbps at most.

Always automatically updated while my Xbox is in standby
