Just like that, all gripes are forgotten . . . (Destiny)
by cheapLEY , Tuesday, December 05, 2017, 10:29 (2627 days ago)
I'm two missions into The Curse of Osiris, and I'm absolutely enthralled. This might be the most fascinating story yet--it certainly has to the potential to be.
There is new content to explore, and that's when Destiny is at its best. All gripes fall by the wayside, now. Until the next down time?
It's entirely too early to make any judgments, but just jumping back in and playing Destiny 2 feels good. I don't want to expect too much, but if this is the pace of updates and content we can expect going forward, I will be an incredibly happy Destiny player.

I appreciate the “for now” stipulation. I cam in ready to fight because I am definitely too invested to not have gripes remaining. But I can overlook (most of) them for the time being.

New expansion: sufficiently amusing. 8/10.
by Funkmon , Tuesday, December 05, 2017, 17:28 (2627 days ago) @ cheapLEY
So far I'm not done with this bad lad but everything was fun, everything I played could be speedrun, the new loot is by no means good, but also not worse than base game. I expected more of Destiny 2, and I got it.
Much more story than the first two expansions, slightly less than ROI. New patrol zone. Nice sweet spot. Keep doing this plz Bingle. Now make normal mode raid Crota level easy and I'm in.

It was definitely fun. I liked the ride. The missions were fun, and I liked the story it presented well enough.
For all the talk about the Infinite Forest . . . it sure sucks. I mean, it's actually pretty cool. But you can't enter it freely. You have to be doing one of the missions that takes you into it, or one of the 3 Adventures that take you back in there. That's it. Once you've done those, you're done, and you can't go back in unless you pick up one of those Adventures from Brother Vance. It's a real disappointment, actually, because without it, Mercury as a Patrol Zone is tiny. Like, I think the Tower is bigger.
I'd be fine with all that, but I feel like if you call something the goddamn Infinite Forest and talk about all the combinations of encounters it has in there, it should be much more substantial than it is. Maybe I missed something, maybe it's my fault, but I literally thought it was supposed to be the defining feature of Mercury as a Patrol Space, the new Court of Oryx or Archon's Forge. It's nowhere near as substantial as either of those.

The novelty of the Infinite Forest wore off the first time I crossed its random path. I totally adore it as a concept of gameplay and lore, I just don’t want to do it. Infinite Forest has a few noteworthy sections but even those are underwhelming.
You charge across the Infinite Forest and see this wonderfully crafted, yet totally random section ahead. There’s a band of Goblins, a pair of Hobgoblins, and a few Harpies fighting an invading section of Legionaries and your typical Psions. Seems like a waste of time and space. Majors are rare to encounter and I’ve yet to face an Ultra. Sprinkling them into the larger sections, especially those with great verticality, would be a welcome respite from Destiny 2’s first true grind.

Why is the infinite forest not a maze?
by unoudid , Somewhere over the rainbow, Wednesday, December 06, 2017, 07:35 (2626 days ago) @ Grizzlei
Seems like a missed opportunity. Right now the infinite forest is just a random-appearing tunnel where you can just run past everything to open a door to continue. It's basically a door opening simulator filled with some annoying doormen who tickle you as you run by.
What I think would have been cool is if there were multiple doors to open that create a dynamic way of progressing from point A-B. You could have multiple different paths to get from point a-b depending on which door you opened. You could even choose different paths for each member of your fireteam. Make this more maze-like and less tunnel-like.

The biggest reason I can think of is efficiency. Right now, you can only have two "tiles" existing at once, the one you are on and the one you are going to. But if you allowed exploration like what you are saying then it would be a total of up to 6, 2 for each fire team member. There is also certain things like distance rendering which saves a lot of processing power as well, but I imagine that if one of your fire team is far away that is still has to render that so you know what is happening.

Makes sense from a technical standpoint.
Coul they not just allow multiple doors per island and allow the players to select a single path? I'm thinking that it could take between 5-8 islands to hit your destination

I can imagine a raid with the “correct” path. Sectioning off a raiding party or as a whole, consistently failing to figure out the correct sequence of paths will naturally and artificially increase the difficulty. Of course, there isn’t one single right way to do it with randomized sections like in the Infinite Forest.

The infinite forest seems like it would be a fun way to incrementally add different stuff.
Test out mechanics, add a basket ball court, or a court of oryx style boss rush, do different activities and the like.
It does seem like a lot of effort on map design for something you will see perhaps 2 hours of, at most.

I hope they’re implementing the Infinite Forest at least as a study into future, more expansive and enriching arenas like it. I don’t expect much with the Year One mini-expansions so much figured they were a novelty this time around at best.

Thoughts
by Cody Miller , Music of the Spheres - Never Forgot, Tuesday, December 05, 2017, 21:14 (2627 days ago) @ cheapLEY
-Too many reused spaces. We should not backtrack to Nessus or EDZ. Everything should happen on Mercury since it's what the freaking story revolves around. Needed more unique spaces on Mercury. Infinite forrest was boring, and it was reused like 4 times in the already short campaign.
-The opening cutscene tells us everything is different now that the traveler is awake… but then the traveler being awake has zero impact on the story and is never mentioned again.
-Brother Vance doesn't get to meet Osiris.
-A few campaign missions felt like adventures.
-Villain's threat is unclear and vague. I did not understand the urgency.
-Overall the story was not that gripping. Not enough time to set it up properly and make it great.
-Golden Age Mercury was cool looking.
-Precursor and Descendant Vex were cool looking.
-Difficulty was very easy. Still no ability to select difficulty.
-Probably the worst expansion unfortunately. Dark Below had the Raid. House of Wolves gave us Trials and many game changes / crucible maps. Taken King was Taken King. Rise of Iron had a Raid and game changes (such as artifacts). Even if the Raid Lair is on par with or better than Prison of Elders, HoW added tons more that CoO didn't.
![Avatar](images/avatars/310.png)
As long as raid lair is something to actually do, disagree.
by Funkmon , Tuesday, December 05, 2017, 22:34 (2627 days ago) @ Cody Miller
This is easily the best expansion we have gotten for $20.
TDB had 4 exotics, one the Nechrochasm. It had 3 missions. The raid took 15 minutes. There was a half of a new spot in one mission. One strike. No social space.
I like the 15 minute raid, but still.
House of Wolves had a new crucible game mode, a half-raid activity, and occasional new story areas. It had 5 missions, 3 crucible maps, and a strike. There were like 4 exotics. New social space. Reforging.
This one has 6 missions, mostly new areas on a new planet, 3 crucible maps, 2 strikes, and 3 new adventures. There's a bunch of new exotic gear, and new gameplay features being added in, like reforging. In addition to the new half raid activity, this also brings the old raid forward with the prestige mode.
To me, there's no competition there.

Slightly being the key word.
That shit is honestly embarrassing. Bungie make it real hard to root for them sometimes.
I’m still mostly okay with what we got for the money, especially if the Raid Lair is good, but calling those things Strikes is a real stretch.
As I have said a few times, Queens Wrath Draksis was the best strike in the game.
Give me more story missions hopped up on herbal Viagra and call them strikes plz.

It’s more disappointing that they handled the story here the way they did. First of all, I feel like the retconned Brother Vance from House of Wolves. He seems completely different, and basically just an Osiris fanboy now rather than a co-conspirator.
And here you have the ‘most legendary guardian’, and you get this short poorly handled storyline which doesn’t feel like it ties into anything or is important. A character like that deserved a TTK level storyline to be honest. I feel like they kind of wasted him.

Not sure how anyone would expect it to be different. They wanted the strikes to be part of the story so they made them into missions.
I’m not buying the DLC because the game is still unfun and a 45 minute story won’t change that, but this isn’t a valid complaint.

When I heard them say this, I thought they meant that the strikes would be unique and take place as part of the campaign progression, as in Vanilla Destiny. You’d play some missions, then the strike would pop up next and you’d do it.

You’re probably right. I only half watched that stream while I was doing other things. Some of my expectations came from folks around here debating whether it was procedural generation or not. The way they talked about all the different combinations and how it’ll be different every time you go in—I have to wonder why they bothered for as little time you actually get to spend in there.

I really don’t want to come off as overly negative here, and I know I’m at risk of that. I am happy with what Curse of Osiris provided, and will be more so if the Raid Lair is cool and the forge and masterworks stuff is neat.
But I am seriously confused about the Infinite Forest. It is so lackluster, that I legitimately don’t really understand why they talked about it. I think it’s literally four rooms that might as well not be any different to begin with.
Maybe I’m expecting too much from a $20 add-on three months after release, but I can’t help but be slightly disappointed. Advertising a new Destination and Patrol space brings with it a certain expectation (at least for me), and Mercury is extremely lackluster. I thought Titan would be the bare minimum size for a Destination, and I’m not sure I want to get new ones if they’re as small as Mercury. I can’t imagine what folks that really want the new Mercury armors sets will have to endure, grinding out that single public event for a pair of tokens, and that single lost sector. Is there even a chest dropping major in that area?

Vex Hoops allow for 3 drops, there are at least 2 treasure-combat locations (like on Titan) and the standard HVTs running about. Plus regular chests. But very few destination chests, and they don’t seems to spawn outside of the Donut.

I don't know if I've been absurdly lucky, or what... but I've spent maybe an hour in the public space, and earned enough tokens for several engrams already. I have 3 of the 5 pieces of the Titan armor at this point... and we're a day into the expansion.
I don't think it's going to be as hard as you think it is.

Secrecy regarding upcoming content, more open communication regarding problems & fixes. As things currently are DeeJ, Urk, & Cozmo23 must don their "online asbestos suits" daily. I suspect more secrecy & more communication would help, but they need to be in the right areas.

I'm fine with Bungie/Activision telling us what expansions to expect, even giving us the basic setting is fine IMHO, I don't feel that feeds to the over-hype-train. My problem comes with the detailing of everything in the expansion before hand.
Edit: heck, I'd even be happy with them giving us an idea of the size of the expansion. # of strikes, # of multiplayer maps, an idea of the story length.
Edit2: in fact, they really need to communicate that.

I miss Frankie talking about how good the water was. Although that’s partly because the water in Destiny is bad. I was in a pool on past Mercury in the Infinite Forest and it doesn’t even react to anything. No ripples or anything. For as amazing as Destiny is and looks, it’s filled with corner cutting stuff like that. Driving the tank through the water on that mission in the EDZ looks like hot garbage too.

And then he was all like, BAM:

Because someone quoted your original post in their reply before you edited it, making your entire post viewable regardless of any edit that you made.

Slightly worried I said something mean.
There's more going on there than I thought, and it's nearly constant.
Finish the public event, hit the loot chest that the two big Harpies are guarding and fighting the Cabal over, take out a high value target, hit the vex gates for three chests, run into the lost sector, hit the public event again, etc.
It's fun enough in its own right for a loop or two, and it's quick enough for gathering tokens that those folks that really want that armor set can probably get it done quickly enough.

They literally said this in the stream.

Not sure how anyone would expect it to be different. They wanted the strikes to be part of the story so they made them into missions.
I’m not buying the DLC because the game is still unfun and a 45 minute story won’t change that, but this isn’t a valid complaint.
I played for at least 3 hours last night, pretty much straight through the story, and while my friends told me I got near the end, I didn't finish. 45 minutes might be possible if you're a full fireteam speedrunning as much as possible and ignoring the story (and there is one, and it makes sense), but for the average player, you're probably looking at 4 hours (at least) of gameplay just to finish the story, before the midgame and endgame content opens up.

Ended up playing Des2ny a bit today and now that I’m not expecting it to be great it’s a solid game. Might even cop the DLC.

Chappy and I ran the story last night on our alts. From the time we loaded in until we finished the last adventure it took around 2hrs. We skipped the cutscenes and ran through most of the infinite forest. Using a rep booster we were able to still level up to 25 while skipping a lot of things.

-Difficulty was very easy. Still no ability to select difficulty.
I know I've harped on this a bunch already, but this remains extremely disappointing. For the last 2-3 missions I gave up shooting and went Arcstrider melee only. This presented almost no extra difficulty, although meleeing Hydras to death was somewhat amusing. I'm just really not used to having to manufacture fun myself the first time through a Bungie campaign.

Which types of butts though? The soft flabby ones? or a super toned athlete with a rock hard booty?
I could see heroic adventures being hard solo. But with a fireteam of 2 they are really not that tough.

They are between normal nightfall and regular strikes to me. Closer to the nightfall side though. It's nice that it's still decently hard.
Probably just seemed difficult because the rest of the DLC content was hilariously easy.

My biggest annoyance is still in the game, I spend a large amount of time managing my inventory because they refuse to institute a kiosk system for gear you've already earned.

I agree, it would be nice to at least see if you got sets of armor and be able to "collect" them like you see on some website managers or like they did in the Witcher 3. I'm not saying you have to display them, just know if you have all the pieces and be able to pull/buy them back at the tower.

(preface written after the below diatribe was made. It started as a short idea but it seems I kind of went off the rails. Seems I had some pinned up frustration.)
Man oh man have I tried to stay positive these past few weeks with everything that has been going on. I bought in to the CoO promotion, the blog post, tweets but I'm just not feeling it.
Last night I completed the CoO story and first heroic adventure for a vexy weapon. Aaaand I'm back to wandering around the EDZ trolling public events.
Titan doesn't capture my attention.
Nessus is a cool environment but I have no comment good or bad about it.
I can't stand Io because of all the vertical leveling, constantly falling off cliffs and deciding if it's worth round-abouting to get back up to where I was.
EDZ is such a cool environment that is spacious, pretty, easy to navigate and has many areas with specific tones but still keeps the same trend.
Mercury looks cool but is kind of drag to have to get around without a sparrow. The terrain is kind of obnoxious. I try to make a straight line to my destination and I'm sliding backwards down steep hills or trying to jump over blocks that I can't jump just high enough to go over.
The CoO campaign was underwhelming. It felt like I was just playing the same mission over and over. The Infinite Forest is a cool concept but it took longer to get through that to get to the mission, than the actual mission lasted. During my third run through the Forest I was tired of having to be there just to get to the mission.
Loot. I've pretty much had the same armor since week 2 of launch, and I don't really like any of it. I loved my hunter in D1, it had character and looked different than anyone else. In D2, Hunter armor all looks the same. Look at these!
Road Complex
Errant Knight
Sword Flight
These all looks the same. There are the armor sets from each planet but they are boring. Iron Banner armor looks cool but good luck getting them. Most of my current armor is from Eververse...and we all have our thoughts about that. I even started hoarding tokens from everything to turn in after CoO in hopes of new armor. Nope. Those same three over and over.
Add to this, if I want to switch armor, I'm going to lose my color shader and mod that is attached to them. Now I have TONS of shaders and mods...but none of them I want. I have so many mods and shaders I don't care about, and don't really have the time to break down the 100 EDZ shaders one at a time to make room for new shaders.
And the mods, good grief can I get a kinetic mod please? And why does there have to be a specific mod for each specific piece of armor? Can't we just have weapon mods and armor mods? Especially for armor. Can't we streamline this a bit instead of taking up 5 spots for grenade cooldown and 5 spots for kinetic reloading and 5 spots for power reloading, etc.
And the submachine guns and sidearms. Can we talk about these? Does anyone use them? Ever? and Grenade launchers too. Yet it seems it's all I ever get.
Now let's look at the rate of progression. In D1, I didn't reach max light until the patch at the very end with the final record book, and they were handing out high light gear like candy on halloween. In D2, I was max light in 3 weeks. In D1, there were so many activities on so many levels. Simple basic tasks like patrols, public events and bounties. Basic tasks for basic gear. Then they had some moderate things like exotic quests which were nothing to sneeze at but obtainable. Then they had challenges like Black Spindle which you had to wipe your brow after and probably call in some friends. Then there were raids and Iron Banner for top tier gear. If you wanted to have the best gear, you had to get your hands dirty.
In D2 it's...here you go. Here is everything up front. Anyone and everyone can have everything. Zero effort, here you go. So now what? "Hey want to play the raid? It's difficult, confusing, frustrating at times and will take a really long time to complete...for pretty much the same reward as 30 minutes doing literally anything else in the game." No thanks, I'll pass.
So why do I keep playing this game? Am I holding on to what used to be? Am I actually having fun playing this game or am I just playing out of habit? I don't know but after purchasing an expansion and being immediately bored with it breaks my heart.
