Mercury is a crazy Destination (Destiny)

by cheapLEY @, Tuesday, December 12, 2017, 19:49 (2387 days ago)

It's small, but there is a lot going on there. It makes me wonder how much I might have missed on other Destinations (especially Io, where I still haven't really spent much time).

I spent an hour on Mercury tonight and ran into a bunch of stuff I hadn't seen yet. A bunch of Psion Flayers showed up and were running around. We only killed one of them and it dropped some loot like what pops out of a Strike chest. Not sure if anything cool happens if you manage to get all three down. Also saw a Templar show up, but it didn't stick around very long at all, and I wasn't able to kill it solo. Also say a pair of yellow bar Hobgoblins called Mercury Defenders. Killed them both, neither dropped anything and nothing happened, as far as I can tell.

Mercury is almost non-stop action. More than most other Destinations, even. You can just run a continuous loop and rack up Mercury Tokens very quickly.

The Mercury Defenders and their Cabal yellow bar equivalents count toward the flashpoint milestone this week. That way you are not stuck waiting on the single public event.

I'm really disappointed that the Infinate Forest, past Mercury, and Future Mercury are not part of patrol area. They seem underused for how big they are.

Yeah, I'm still a bit bummed about the implementation of the Infinite Forest. I quite like it as a combat space. I really like both of the strikes that take place there, even though they're just those two missions from the story. I like that they integrated what seems like a SRL track into one of them, too.

I think that's what they intend the heroic adventures for.

I've done two heroic strikes solo, both were "The Runner"

First time was last week after relase.
Second time was last night after update.

Both times, getting through the Infinite Forest was brutal. Especially a section that pitted me against 4 Ogres. I'm sure having a full fireteam greatly enhances the experience but man...I died a lot.

They must have updated the boss at the end becuase on my first run, I used supers, heavies, grenades and I don't think I even drained his first 1/3 bar. He made it to his ship without a scratch.

Last night, I used my super and melted him immediately. It only took 1/2 of my Arc Staff to take him out.

I talk to myself a lot while playing. My Infinite Forest comments were:
"...really?"
"I don't know about that."
"...seriously?"

My comment entering the boss battle was:
"hurgh...this guy. Oh. well....ok?"

Totally agree, after reading my post again, my mood might not have been presented accurately.

I didn't have a problem constantly respawning. Creating new tactics and pathways in the forest was really fun. If it were a no-respwan area, it might be different but it was fun.

The heroic infinite forest adventures have the rotating elemental boosts, so if your super happened to be Arc and the arc boost was up, you'd do a boatload of damage. Seems likely to me.

sometimes the nightfall has elemental boosts (burn) that rotates thru all elements. I guess the same is for the heroic adventures, i've yet to do one. in the notification area above your super it will tell you what the current burn is. If you can, try to have different elements on your secondary, heavy and super, so that you'll have 3/4 elements covered. Don't waste elemental ammo or super on boss until the proper burn is active.

One of the common modifiers is Prism, which rotates the burn through all three elements. It says, in the bottom left of the screen, which is active (nicely color-coded so you don't have to even READ it, you can just glance to look for blue (Arc), orange (Solar) or purple (Void). When, say, Solar is on, Solar weapons (and abilities, and grenades) do triple the normal amount of damage, while Arc and Void weapons are actually nerfed (I'm not sure how much - 10%?). Kinetic weapons do the same damage throughout.

But yeah, we went into the Runner with three of us, all having Solar supers... we waited just before entering the area where the boss starts running until Solar popped, then ran around the corner and unloaded on him. He died before taking 5 steps.

Prism is much nicer than the elemental burns that went along with Destiny 1 - those buffed your weapons and abilities just like Prism does... but they also buffed enemy shields and attacks by the same amount. So those Void Psions protecting Valus Ta'aurc could take you out with almost a single shot - that's what made burns in D1 Nighfalls push the playstyle towards hide-n-ping. Here, Prism does nothing to your enemy's power - they're tough, but the toughness is constant throughout, while yours gets buffed, elementally, as you go.

Are you sure about that? I thought Prism worked the same way, where the burn is active for players and enemies. I haven’t done enough Prism Nightfalls to actually know, but the few I have done certainly felt that way.

Close to 100% positive. I guess I COULD be wrong, but I don't think so. (They're hard enemies... but they don't get any elemental advantages.)

Well, I know that when I was playing the Heroic adventure with buffs that boosted Energy Weapons, I was suddenly getting 2-shot killed by Psion Snipers.

You're right. They don't buff enemies at all. The enemies are *always* badasses in herics.

I'm sure the Infinite Forest is just an ace in the hole for the live team now. It's underused solely because Bungie didn't have enough time/manpower to put everything they wanted in it. That is at least my guess. However, like I said, I know Bungie is well aware of the potential that is has and will most likely add something else to it down the line.

I’m actually worried about this exact possibility. I don’t like the Infinite Forrest as a concept at all. I do appreciate what they were going for (creating a playspace that would stay fresh through repeated playthroughs while also tying it into Vex lore). But I find it thoroughly immersion-breaking. It just screams “PROCEDURALLY GENERATED LEVELS!!!” at me. I’ve run into the occasional “block” that provided a somewhat well-designed combat encounter, but most of it is just a blur of forgettable sameness. And my fear is that Bungie is going to use this space for more missions in the future as a comparitavely quick and easy way to generate “new” content. It brings me back to my biggest complaints with the content in D1; there wasn’t a lack of it, most of it just wasn’t good enough to be memorable or stand out. The Infinite Forest hits me as a step in the direction of quantity over quality.

I like it!

The public event is like a mini-boss complete with its own geometry, which is cool. Unlocking heroic mode is super neat as well.

Other encounters I ran into yesterday in a couple of hours of tooling around:

- There's a mini-boss colossus who guards one of the zone chests. If you knock him off the map, he jumps back up, which surprised me the first time it happened.

- There's a chain of circular launchers that rings the area. If you go through one set, it spawns a chest-dropping guy at the end. There are three sets of launchers and you can do all three before they despawn for 3 chests!

- There's a huge, super buff hydra that appears and guards a locked chest from attacking Cabal. I've never killed the guy, but it's possible to do so much damage to the hydra that the chest unlocks and you can run in and loot it.

- There's a group of Cabal escorting a yellow bar Colossus from one side of the zone to another. Kill the yellow for a chest. I like this one because they actually move like a "protect the VIP" squad of guys.

I really hope that the other worlds are given these sorts of activities to make them feel more "alive"

A few comments of note:

• The Rings also show up on Nessus and Io.

• The super buff Hydra is part of it being the Flashpoint. There are two Harpies you have to kill to unlock the chest, same as the Scavenging Fallen on Titan. I’ve only seen three locations, but the Hydra is new this week.

• Most of the destinations get these during their Flashpoint weeks. Though not as concentrated.

Most efficient way to do this loop: Kill the two Hobgoblins guarding the first ring, jump in. Kill the set at the end of this set of rings (and the start of the next set) - a well-placed rocket as you're leaving the last ring will take them both out before you land. Repeat through the next set of rings (jump in, kill the Hobgoblins at the end). Jump in to the third set - it brings you back to where you started, where there'll either be the spawned Minotaur to kill and loot the chest of, or someone will have killed him while you were gone, leaving his chest for you to loot. Jump in, rinse, repeat (x2). The travel time (and kill time on the Minotaurs) are such that even if someone kills the Minotaur a few seconds after you leave, the chest will still be there when you get back at the end of the circuit.

Show? They're on your map!

Okay, seriously: You can only unlock them during the public event, and you can only unlock one side per public event, because the very act of unlocking them triggers the heroic mode.

Spoilers for triggering heroic mode follow:

On one side, there's some damn diamonds off in space, and when you shoot the diamonds, platforms appear. Jump up on those mother f-ers and shoot some more damn diamonds. I forget how many. I think it's a simple 1 diamond - then 2 diamonds -
then 3, then forget you were using dashes and switch to commas, then 4 diamonds sort of progression. After the last diamond,
there's a (moderately) tricky jump and then you're up on top of the side tower and your sweet sweet zone chest is just sitting right there in front of you, dripping wet and begging to be torn open in a fit of ravenous passion.

The other side is the same, except it's not diamonds and I haven't done it yet so I'm not actually sure.

I hope that helped.

Oh yeah:

You also just triggered heroic mode for the public event.

Well, to add:

The process is the same for each side, 1 Diamond, 2 Platforms, 2 Diamonds, 1 Platform,
3 Diamonds, 1 Platform. However, it can go left of right from the first platform on either side, and the diamonds are not always in the same places. But other than some minor geometry the processes are identical on each side.

You can actually choose which side has diamonds. It's always the first the game lets you jump to, which in turn is decided by the last 'bomb' you plant.

The chest that was up on the Fargate wall was the one that took me forever to find. I eventually had to YouTube it and still had some issues.

The chest by Bro V was stolen from me. I went in to look for it, found it, opened it. I later learned there were hidden books and a whole rigamarole to drop a force field blocking the chest. I guess someone in the room did it right before me. So when I learned about the books, I completed the task but (in voice of the Canadian guy that saw bigfoot on Family Guy) thayr whas no chest.

This is what happened to me, I went in there the first time and I saw the field and before I was done saying "Hey look! it's a golden chest!" the field dropped and I grabbed it :P

But because I knew there had to be a puzzle of some sort, I tried to figure it out with Beorn and we eventually cracked it!

Mercury Regional Chests are character bound, not account bound. So if you have alts you can still “get the full experience.”
