I bought a Playstation over an Xbox so I didn't have to deal with this shit. At least you can turn it off (turn off automatic downloads for 'featured' content).

Dude, Featured Content (and official instructions for how switch it off: Settings > System > Automatic Downloads) has been a thing for years on PS4. It's probably just news right now because a bunch of people are picking up a PS4 for the holidays and Activision wanted D2 exposure.

But if you disabled the Featured Content when you first got the console, then you won't see this ad, ever.

Much ado about nothing.

Clickbait video titles upset me more than any publisher act.

P sure the contract is that Advertising is all Activision. Like wasn’t that the fire that lit all the hubbub that lead to Marty getting fired? Because Activision has advertising control.

I don’t care if it’s Activision’s fault or it’s Bungie’s fault. The only time I want an ad to show for a game is when I am browsing the PSN store. Everywhere else they can fuck off.

Then blame Sony? P sure they are the ones who put the ads in as an opt-out instead of an opt-in. Doesn’t change that incorrectly citing a generally antagonized group to bait out angry viewers is a worse level of predatory practice.

Also, I say it exists every time you slag on Xbox for it

The fundamental difference...

I opted out when it was first introduced, and quickly forgot about it. If you've brought this specific tab up, I may have mistaken what you were saying about it. It wasn't until Cody's "sky is falling" post here that i saw the video thumbnail and remembered that it was a thing.

But this is different from Xbox's historically intrusive ads in two big ways:

1. You can disable it when you first set up your console, so that you never see a single ad like this. If you didn't check your settings when you first set up your console, that's kind of on you, no? Sure, it sucks that it's an opt-out feature, but it's something you can control. Xbox has never given you that option.
If you've yet to do it, it takes all of 15 seconds. Settings, System, Automatic Downloads, uncheck "Featured Content". That's it.

2. It's a single tab with a game, not some irrelevant "Get a discount on shaving gel when you join the military" crap like you see on Xbox. Granted, the most recent Xbox UI updates have removed most of that from the initial home screen, with most of the ads that I saw being for an actual game, but again, you can't remove them.

"you" meant Cody there. sorry to confuse.

No. Activison / Bungie took out the ad in the first place. Maybe think about not taking out an intrusive ad if you don't want critics shitting on you:

To be fair, Activision/Bungie did not choose to make that space available there... Sony designed their own dashboard, and if Bungie/Activision didn’t buy that space for Destiny, some other publisher would have bought it for their own game. We can grumble about the intrusiveness of ads on the dashboard, and I’ll largely agree with you about that, but it’s a no-brainer for the marketing teams at Bungie and Activision to jump on a prominent spot like that in the event that it is made available to them.

Eh, it applies, because I recall addressing it before.
