I did not play the first one and I'd say that most of the returning characters and previous happenings were reintroduced pretty well. But, as you get closer to the end it does drop a few characters on you who Kat seems to have dealt with before but who I was just clueless about.

Oh, if nothing else, track down the short two part anime on YouTube. It doesn't exactly bridge the gap between the two games, but it does give slightly more context to the state Kat finds herself in at the beginning of the 2nd game. And its just a bunch of fun to watch.
