The "No Way In Hell" Dream (Destiny)
I actually had a dream a couple nights ago...how awesome (though totally impossible)it would be if when the Destiny 1 servers are taken down, that Bungie release an offline build so we can keep playing. My god, that would be incredible. Story missions with custom skull modifiers, regular or interactive 'public' events, Nightfall with the actual Nightfall modifier...LAN Raids.
They could even add the precious Theater Mode, and give that to the people for their own use!
Man, that was a fun night.
How Times Change
It's always bothered me that Marathon's public lifetime would be over when the last registration card or serial number list got lost. Hopefully this is the version that I'll be playing in fifty years under emulation on some fuckfast portable the thickness of a sheet of paper that walks my dog, dresses me every morning and grinds up my food because I don't have any teeth left. And hopefully it won't be running Windows.

Guess the idea of Destiny having a finite lifetime isn't so bothering to him anymore.
How Times Change
Heh. I’m more saddened by the running Windows part of the quote.

I'm not. :)
I don't think we should count our gooses before they're cooked, though. Why wouldn't something be done that would allow Destiny to continue to be played after Bungie's servers went down? I don't assume we know what will happen.

Can you provide any examples where this has happened before? Every other game that relies on servers dies when the servers are shut off.

It wasn't a game that relied on servers, but Bungie did previously open-source the Marathon engine. It's not too far of a stretch to think they might someday open-source the destiny server code. I mean, probably not for many years, but it's possible.

Because the technical challenges to do so are most likely immense. A LOT of what goes on with Destiny is determined by or stored on a remote server somewhere. All of that stuff would need to be changed to point to a local resource. And those local resources might not even currently exist. So we're not just talking about flipping a proverbial switch from "get inventory items from server" to "get inventory items from local file." We might also be talking about having to design and build that local file structure, from scratch. In some ways it could almost be like building a new game. Way too much to ever expect Bungie to just do for free as a modification to the existing game. IF a local-only version of Destiny would ever exist, I would expect that it would need to be sold as a new item. So, perhaps 10-15 years from now when Dinklebot Industries (I assume that will be the name of the company set up to manage the Destiny IP after Bungie moves on) builds "The Guardian Collection."

The good Battlefront II seems to be doing fine

If you thought the wait time for guided games matchmaking was long NOW…

WOW Classic which Bungie is bringing back due to the amount of people who wanted to play on community legacy servers. Though it's still going to be proprietary and they plan to shut down the servers eventually where there is no longer enough interest to keep them running.
