It's a Switch! You think I was going to get an Xbox One X?
Right now I have Zelda, Mario, Puyo Puyo Tetris, and Bayonetta 2. Any must haves please recommend. This is my first Nintendo console purchase since the NES, so I am not super aware of the good Nintendo exclusives.

Zelda and Mario pretty much has you covered as far as Nintendo exclusives go. Splatoon 2 is fun for what it is, but it didn't hold my attention for too long, so I can't really recommend dropping $60 on it.

If you have a co-op partner, Snipperclips is the secret best switch launch title.
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is way better than it should be, if you're a fan of puzzle/strategy games.

I wanted to like it much more than I ended up actually liking it. Honestly, I just got bored. The game is actually really good, it just needed to be half as long as it is. Then again, I also have never finished a Fire Emblem or XCOM game either, despite loving both. I think I just get exhausted with tactical games.

I know folks who swear by Splatoon. Mario + Rabbids as mentioned is brtter than it has a right to be. The Switch is the best platform to experience The Binding Of Isaac on, if you haven’t already invested time into it. I haven’t caught onto anything new as I’ve been traveling for work less the past 6-9 months. Aside, Skyrim on a handheld is novel. D16M is really awkward.

I've yet to play my switch on a TV outside of overcooked...

I've also been putting off playing Mario for a while, I'll probably play that mostly on a big screen.

So it turns out the switch a piece of garbage (my opinion). I opened two games, Mario and Zelda. Thankfully I didn't open them all, because I can return the others. Traded Mario and Zelda back, so I'm really only out 30 bucks.
Mario Odyssey is not fun. I was not a fan of Mario 64, but everyone raved about this one. I found it dull and repetitive, spoon fed around your abilities. Should have seen that coming.
Zelda was better and had some potential, but the switch controllers are really really bad. So bad, it makes any game basically unplayable. Small. Cheap. The buttons suck. So do the sticks. They aren't really even sticks but nubs. The d-pad isn't a d-pad but FOUR DISTINCT BUTTONS making it absolutely useless for its purpose. Awkward when separated. Awkward when put on the controller accessory (which by the way, prevents them from charging!). The pro controller looks like it won't suck, but I shouldn't have to spend 60 bucks to make the system playable.
Zero interest in playing on anything other than a TV, especially since undocking requires you to play with the shitty joy cons.
Downloaded dishonored on Steam instead. Stay tuned.

For whatever it’s worth, the d-pad on the pro controller sucks too, so that’s not even a good solution to that particular problem.

Any time that you see a review for a Nintendo product, remember that it will never be seen through the lens of "normal adults". Those games are on a separate scale. Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Pokémon, etc., on a normal scoreboard, they tend to skew towards mediocre with a neat, fun gimmick. But for the fanboys who have grown up with those franchises, they are all masterpieces no matter what.
Gotta set your expectations a little lower with Nintendo. Remember that their games are made to appeal to little kids first and foremost.

Yeah, the Switch and the Xbone have that in common. The controllers are bad, but when you bring it up, it's all "I use the Elite/Pro controller, and it's great! Durrrr!"
But it'd be dumb to be shelling out for a on overpriced "premium" controller that performs worse than the one that comes with the console, which shouldn't be crappy. If you're tacking on the price of the extra stuff, then you're being nickel & dimed.
That said, the Joycons aren't THAT bad, unless you're playing anything that requires precision. And of course Nintendo will throw in their gimmicks to make you feel like you're more involved.

I've got a PS4, XB1, and a Switch. I didn't realize that the XB1 regular controllers were considered "bad" in comparison to the PS4 ones. I was under the impression that people largely had a preference related to hand size and the types of games they play, not general quality of the pad.
For me, the stick placement on the PS4 is awkward, hence my preference. I have the XB1 "Elite" controller just cause I enjoy using paddles instead of the face buttons. It'd be really cool if the console makers just started including that feature on all their pads.
RE: the switch, I do actually prefer the joy cons to the "Pro" controller because the joy con's buttons have a more satisfying click even if that means a much less comfortable experience

Had a pretty long session with a friend's Switch on portable mode the other day. I really don't like the thumbsticks. I thought I could deal with it, but I was constantly running Mario in a diagonal when I wanted to go straight. If I were to guess, the thumbstick is just way too low flush into the pad.

The XB1 controllers were considered bad even in comparison to 360 controllers. The bumpers sucked, and Microsoft had to address it by redesigning them. They're also cheap-feeling and break easily (when I bought an Xbone, the controller that came with it was broken within a few months. My brother's current controller works fine, but it's got the old bumper design).
And while the thumbsticks themselves are probably the best thumbsticks on the market, the mechanism that they're attached to is flimsy, and messes up easily (causing the controller to drift, or in my case, jam completely when I aim in certain directions). If you play a game where you have to spam the bumpers, the loud, stiff clicking gets old quick, and at least in my case, the rumble is even worse. I think it's just the controller that I use being weird, but the rumble is obnoxious and loud. Something might be loose in there (controller rattles when I shake it).
It should be telling when they released an "Elite" controller, and people praise how much better it is all around, instead of just "it has paddles".
As far as "preference", while I do prefer the Xbone controller for something like Titanfall 2, most of the time my hands are more comfortable with a DS4, which I always thought was funny, since the DS3 was easily one of the most uncomfortable controllers ever made.

Ah, ok. Here is where you can find more info on the thumbstick drifting problem.
And here is a page that details some of the issues that Microsoft addressed. It's a fluff page, but it acknowledges the bumper fixes.
The controller itself also suffers from connection issues (which can pop up at unfortunate times), there are longstanding issues with headsets connecting to the controller (and causing echoes)... I mean, sure, you can fanboy this all as "super rare anecdotal" stuff, but it's always been pretty common. If you want to Kermit it as "I never had an issue, so there's no issue", it's fine, but a simple, quick google shows that these issues aren't isolated, and have in some cases, been acknowledged by MS and fixed... Although, as the Halo World Championships this weekend showed, there are some that remain.
Rumble.
by cheapLEY , Monday, April 16, 2018, 13:06 (2418 days ago) @ Korny
I’ve had three Xbox One controllers now. A Day One controller, one of the first ones with the redesigned bumpers, and my current one that came with the One X.
The rumble in every single one of them has been obnoxious. It literally feels and sounds like the controller is tearing itself apart. If you have Elite Dangerous, the extreme rumble when you exit witch-space is the worst example. I could hear it clearly over my headphones with the sound up pretty high, and it’s bad enough that I turn off rumble completely when I play that game.
I’d also agree that it’s a much cheaper feeling controller than the 360 controller or the DualShock 4. I like the ergonomics better one the One controller, but the DS4 feels like it’s built better and has fewer issues.
I still give them props for using AA batteries rather than a built-in rechargeable battery. The battery life in both of my DS4s sucked from day one, and plugging them in is more annoying than just swapping in new Eneloops.

Yeah it's cool that Microsoft updated the controller to make the bumpers better and add that headset jack (which I really appreciated, I wondered why they didn't just have in the first place like the DS4). By the way, the DS4 got an update as well, but I can't imagine a universe where I would have slid into a thread about the Switch to complain that the original DS4 ONLY worked over bluetooth just like the joy cons and introduced dreaded input lag into my gaming...

Korny's trolling aside, complaints about the Xbox one controller were fairly widespread. Plenty of people loved the controller as-is, but there were common problems and complaints about it, both in terms of how it compared to the Dual Shock 4 as well as to the 360 controller.
Back when I was hosting the Ready up Live podcast, all my co-hosts were huge Xbox fans (as was I)... I was actually the only one on the Podcast who had a PS4 at the time. But none of us thought the controller was as good as the 360 controller, and that was the common consensus on the RUL forums as well. Depending on where your fingers happened to land on the bumpers, they simply wouldn't work. Not everyone would have that problem, but just about nobody ever had that problem with the 360 or PS4 controllers. The disconnect issue still seems to happen frequently enough to be worthy of mentioning (I know my Elite randomly disconnects 2 or 3 times per week... not terrible, but again, its something that never happens with my PS4 or 360 controllers). I've also heard Korny's complaint about the "cheap feel" from quite a few sources. I happen to feel the same way.
None of this is to say that the original Xbox One controllers were bad, but I do think it is fair to say that they were a mixed bag; some improvements, some sideways moves, and some problems. Meanwhile, the Dualshock 4 was a pretty big home run for Sony. I wouldn't say its perfect (the stick placement is still considered by most to be a step down from Xbox's offset stick layout, and the battery life leaves something to be desired). Personally speaking, I put it right on par with my Xbox Elite controller. The Elite controller is great too, but the disconnect issue sucks. I personally find it a little too heavy, as well.
Long story short, I think both Playstation and Xbox offer great controllers now. But there were enough substantial problems with the Xbox One controller at launch as to necessitate several updates and improvements, which is the kind of cost you only see when a hardware maker sees the problems as serious.

Man, I didn't even know that was an issue. I've literally never had that happen to me, not with a Day One Xbox One that I had until early 2016, and not with the One X I've had for a few months now. That's odd.

As seems to be the case in general this generation, it's at least partly an issue of optics. Playstation came from behind last generation and absolutely knocked it out of the park with PS4 in just about every aspect. Is the DS4 amazing? I'd argue that it's a really great controller, but even so, it's such a huge leap over the Six Axis or DS3 that it might as well be perfect. The original Xbox One and controller were completely fine, but also disappointing after the 360 and its controller basically defined the entire generation.

I guess I'm in the minority. I thought the Xbox One controllers were slightly better than the 360s, which is to say they were very good. The DS4 still feels a little bit like you're holding plastic sausages, but not as much as the DS3 did. Love the Elite and have had no problems except disappointment that paddles aren't really for me. Maybe the vibration is too intense. Otherwise, I love it.

It just feels less substantial, a bit cheaper, and the initial bumpers were pretty bad. And the rumble does legitimately annoy me. Luckily, most games don't seem to use really aggressive rumble, so that's only a rare issue.

I fell for the Switch hype too, somewhat. I knew it would never be my main consol, but I do spend 2 hours on the subway each day. So I figured I’d get some use out of it. Plus with all the press ranting about Zelda being like the second coming, I thought that game would at least be a safe bet. Keep in mind that the press have actually been pretty fair towards the past few Zelda games (mixed reviews, less Nintendo fanboyism than usual). But Zelda was a huge flop for me. I’ve never played an open world game that made me want to avoid the world itself so much, with the possible exception of Shadow of Mordor.
That said, I think the switch itself is a cool little device (controller issues granted). I don’t find the joy-cons that bad, but I also barely play the thing. I did buy the pro controller. It’s better, but not good enough for me to bother using it more than once.
I also have had some great times playing Mario Kart with my daughter, as I’ve said before. So I’m ultimately glad I got one for that reason.

The one thing I'm most curious about is the thing no one seems to be addressing, and I HOPE that's a sign that it's not an issue anymore. When the Switch first came out, I remember seeing numerous articles claiming there was a widespread issue with one side controller disconnecting frequently (don't remember whether it was left or right). Some of them also indicated a firmware fix might be pending, but I don't remember hearing whether that happened, or whether it helped the people who were having trouble.
Things like the feel of the buttons or how the controllers sit in your hand are all YMMV to me, and probably things I could live with (I would want to try one first, of course) in exchange for having something I could take on work trips easily. But that disconnection issue... no. So what has everyone's experience been with that, if any?

I’ve only experienced it once, but I’ve probably spent a grand total of 3 hours using the thing in portable mode. By far the most use it gets is docked, with the Joy Cons “split” into 2 separate controllers for my daughter and me. If I recall correctly, the issue was most common for people using it in portable mode with the joycons attached to the console.

That turned out to be a hardware issue with the left joycon, but it had a pretty simple fix. Hopefully they're all manufactured with the tiny bit of foam already in place now.

Very cool. Thank you! Now Nintendo just needs to show me a game that convinces me to buy the system. :)

The problem I have with Zelda is that it’s mostly been a regression since the first two NES games. I did enjoy Link’s Awakening, but that game adopted a very rigid design. You get an item which lets you enter a dungeon, then you get an item in the dungeon that lets you finish. Everything is designed around a more or less linear progression, where the challenges are tailor made to your abilities. This worked for a mobile game, as picking up and playing and not progressing would suck. But for a game you sit down and play, it’s not so good.
The Original let you explore and more or less find (and in some cases beat) dungeons in any order. I found 2 before I found 1. The challenges and world are not built around a linear progression and acquisition of items. There’s a lot of freedom, but more importantly it demands curiosity rather than a willingness to follow a script. I mean, In the later games bombable walls are visible. Like… where is the sense of discovery in that? Bombs weren’t unlimited, so you had to use contextual clues to deduce where secrets might be. There was a style to it after a while, so you could actually begin to learn the ‘rules’ for secrets.
The Switch Zelda supposedly brought this back which had me excited.
This felt like a pre-amble to some kind of analysis

Stay tuned.
Sorry you had such a bad experience. Hope you enjoy Dishonored!
