Mode unlike any in a first person shooter coming in Comet (Destiny)
Activision had an earnings call today and in it mentioned that there would be a new mode coming in the D2 Fall expansion that "is new to first-person shooters as a genre," without any other detail. This stacks up with what a lot of the people at the Community Summit said about the mode. Obviously, they were under NDAs, but a few mentioned that it was unlike anything they'd played before. Interesting stuff! Hopefully, when they reveal the expansion at E3 next month we'll get a preview of it.

Embrace the power of "and"
I mean, one of the two is just a mechanical accessory right :)

Prediction: Faction Rally 2.0
Point 1: The idea of faction rally has so much potential and has never really been utilized to truly determine the "best" faction.
Point 2: Battle Royale mode is all the rage these days.
Point 3: Destiny wouldn't really work as BR game.
But what if...
There was a true Faction Rally mode that pitted the three factions against each other in a giant PvE arena? You gain points by eliminating AI characters and more points by eliminating opposing factions. We have a revive feature, it could be a turf war type of thing. I don't know.
But something that involves many guardians fighting out for some sort of supremacy on a large scale.

Yeah, I had a similar thought, could be cool! Especially if they put it in patrol zones or something. Activision did say it's not Battle Royale, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be a big scale PvP mode.
A few of the people that were at the summit have talked about the new mode (in VERY general terms) and seem to suggest it's PvE (like mentioning how hard it is). That's where I get really stuck if true. Could be anything, or something completely original.

I doubt it's a PvP thing at a massive scale only because they showed it off at the summit which means they either organized a large PvP event for EVERYONE at the summit at once. Or it's a Really cool PvE thing that large sections of people can play at once. My vote would be the latter. Which I'm totally cool with as I like PvE more than PvP.

The part that is so intriguing is "new to first-person shooters as a genre." I was listening to Destiny Radio podcast last week and they were discussing this mode and also mentioned how awesome it was and unlike anything they had seen "in a first person shooter."
So instead of thinking of a game mode, it might just be a mechanic inside an existing mode. What are some common features of WoW or League of Legends that could be implemented? Destiny has just bordered the line of an RPG style game anyway so what features from other genres could be brought into an FPS?

Could be interesting. People said similar things about the original D1 raid.

Normally I would dismiss a statement like that as hyperbole, but I'm not precisely because they did it with the Vault of Glass.

Competitive Coop?
Maybe something like a raid or Prison of Elders, but 2 teams of 3 compete against each other to complete a task or kill a boss. The twist would be that your team could take a series of actions that would trigger an detrimental affect on the other team. For example, something like a completing the platform section of the Oryx fight could spawn a Light Eating Knight in the other team's instance.

This reminded me of PvP Tower defenses in RTS games... could be something like that. Defend the object, but if you do certain things it makes it harder for the other team.
