Apparently if you play Fortnite on PS4, you can't use your Fortnite account on the Nintendo Switch. https://www.polygon.com/2018/6/14/17463114/sony-ps4-fortnite-response-nintendo-switch-account

If we are talking about cross-play, then that is correct. PS4 players cannot play with Xbox players (or Switch).
I read that as: If you play Fortnite on Xbox you can't link your account via Switch (which is what is happening for PS4 players), which is incorrect.
This is what happens when I stay up too late Raiding. #ItsStillWorthIt
EDIT: Because I'm still not sure I got it right. Or is it that Epic accounts linked with a PS account will not let you link your Xbox account?

Epic = PS4
Epic = Xbox + Nintendo + PC + Mobile
That is how you can link your Epic account. If you link it to PS4, not only are you tied to just using it on PS4 while it's linked, you can't unlink it from PS4 ever to move it to the other systems.
If you have your Epic account linked to any of the others, you can share your purchased content and crossplay with any of the others at any time.
