Spider Bounties (am I missing something x 3) (Destiny)

by kidtsunami @, Atlanta, GA, Monday, October 01, 2018, 11:28 (2321 days ago)

Am I missing out on something?

Even when I had to do a few bounties for him I just did the glimmer ones quickly and moved along in the campaign.

As they (all but one) offer "Legendary Gear" and take a currency that requires hanging about the tangled shore (which I've moved on from due to Dreaming City fun times), I haven't casually picked them up/done any of them.

So, while I help melt any "WANTED" I see show up with whoever is interested, I still feel like I'm just missing out on something.

My issues

  • I don't know why bounties to pick up based on what activities I'm about to do. The strike playlist doesn't exactly guarantee that I'm going to run into any specific enemy within an hour or two (and that would require me to even know which ones show up in strikes...).
  • The rewards are just "meh"? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  • They require a currency that would require me to kill time in the tangled shore when I'm using whatever spare moments I've stolen to continue pursuing powerful engrams...

So yeah, am I missing something? Are the rewards cool and unique in some way? Should I develop a mental map of where each of these WANTED characters pop up and pick up the bounties as part of my playstyle? Has this particular part of the design just passed me by?

Note: Aside from completing a few target bounties in the first couple days of Foresaken, I’ve only ever done the top-tier wanted bounties each week (the 1-per-week that gives a powerful reward). And I’ve managed to get both Lord of Wolves and Queenbreakers Bow. Could just be crazy luck, but at any rate it is certainly possible to get them without needing to grind every bounty each week.

Though I haven't bothered with the powerful engram one as it appears to be LL 550 and I'm in my 530s...

They’ll be tough at your level, but not impossible. I’m happy to run them with you any time if you catch me online. They’re pretty quick with 2 or 3 players.

Ditto.

The Silent Fang one from two weeks ago was pretty challenging solo. I was in the mid 530s when I did it. It took a few deaths and then lots of hiding in a cave and poking from a distance to get it done. But it was a cool fight.

This one is cheesable (I found this out accidentally). You don't need to go into the room to start the encounter, and if you don't, you can use the closed door to protect you when things get hairy. There are two red-bar knights that spawn with you periodically, so you can't be TOTALLY oblivious to your surroundings... but it's pretty easy to solo with a Sleeper and an energy weapon for the periodic knights, regardless of level.

So I found out that those things can move Lost Sectors. I did the Silent Fang one alone and it was in a cave, then a few days ago we ran squid through because he had it left over from the previous week and it was in the big Cabal ship instead. So cheesing strategies won’t nevessariky carry over.

I don’t know if it changed daily, or if it’s iust always a random Lost Sector.

This might be true...

...but I play more than almost all of you (WastedonDestiny tells me I'm in the top 2% of Destiny players, time-wise, and I do a LOT of bounties), and I don't have either of those.

I have Queenbreaker, but I don't remember getting it from a Spider Bounty. Probably I did, but I haven't done very many of them beyond the powerful reward ones.

That being said, keep doing them because Queenbreaker is fantastic and awesome and completely insane in PvP. It practically aims for you, works at both short and long ranges, and charges so fast you can counter shotgun rushers or snipers.

Mine came from a strike. Come to think of it, I think it was only Lord of Wolves that was confirmed to drop from the bounties.

I just got one from a random exotic engram that dropped while doing the Blind Well.

To me, the Spider bounties look like content that was put in the game specifically for players that progress very slowly through the campaign. While most of us (I suspect) have largely moved on to the Dreaming City, the Xbox Achievement data shows that only somewhere around 10% of players have even reached the Dreaming City. So there’s a sizeable chunk of the player base who is still plugging away at the Tangled Shore, and might want more activities to do while they’re there.

That’s my biggest issue with the tiered soft cap system. The Tangled Shore is a really cool place, but it feels like the game really rushed me through it with not a whole lot of reasons to go back. I wish it was like half as complex as the Dreaming City with a bit more to find. The Dreaming City should be the standard for all destinations moving forward.

Spider Bounties (am I missing something x 3)

by marmot 1333 @, Monday, October 01, 2018, 12:14 (2321 days ago) @ kidtsunami

Here's my experience, based on doing all of them except the top-level one every week:

  • I got Lord Of Wolves the first week. No other exotics
  • All the WANTED bounties you get are either tied to Lost Sectors (Named in the flavor text of the bounty) or are the random High Value Targets on destinations (It usually says the area they spawn in the flavor text). So far none of them have been for the random WANTED that show up during strikes. There is that useful imgur link that names all the Lost sectors.
  • You get non-powerful-gear-legendaries as rewards
  • You can synergize with other bounties for doing Lost Sectors (Clan, vanguard, destination bounties.)
  • To buy them, you need ghost shells. You can only hold 10 ghost shells at a time, but buying all the bounties costs probably around 30 total? Not exactly sure. It takes multiple trips per week to get them all. Ghost shells are easy to get from doing patrols, killing high value targets, doing PEs.
  • Following up on that, I like buying all the bounties for a specific destination at once, and going to do them all back-to-back. There are generally a lot of EDZ ones.
  • They're usually pretty easy.

As far as I can tell, the Wanted enemies in strikes are only for the Triumphs.

WHAAAAT, I did not know that the strikes ones had nothing to do with them, it's one of the main reasons I avoiding picking them up. If it's like an actual bounty and I use the flavor text to go hunt them down in patrol, that's awesome.

That's exactly what it is. The patrol zone ones can be annoying, though, because they don't necessarily spawn consistently. You might have to end up waiting around for them.

Usually a good excuse to check destination bounties or days when you have patrol bounties you can stack on while you wait.

So, the thing that ZackDark posted is a big one, obviously. Both of those weapons are fun.

The thing about them for me was, and is, that the lost sector versions are a relatively quick way to get a guaranteed piece of legendary gear (the other ones DO give the gear, obviously, but the random nature of the spawns makes them less quick most of the time). My playstyle with Destiny is to put together a separate build for each subclass. Certain weapon types, and armor perks that go with those, or suit the abilities that I tend to use with each. Having a lot of different perk rolls is VERY helpful for this, so just being able to get that many shots at gear rolls that easily is worthwhile to me.

by cheapLEY @, Monday, October 01, 2018, 12:28 (2321 days ago) @ stabbim

It feels like that’s their real purpose. It’s a good guaranteed source of gear with perks, which will be much more helpful when I’m closer to max level and have tons of dupes for cheap infusion.
