Gambit is hard solo queue (Destiny)

by Cody Miller @, Music of the Spheres - Never Forgot, Friday, October 05, 2018, 12:50 (2311 days ago)

Last night I get the last piece of Gambit armor, so I figure I can get the powerful gear from winning a match with all of it on.

First of all, the hunter armor is all agility oriented, so I was left with 10 mobility. It's actually kind of insane how much faster you move while aiming down sights. I know everyone loves recovery, but I wonder how agility would play with a peekaboo hand canon style.

But hat's not the sad part. I queue in solo, and I lose SEVEN games before winning one. Gambit is way harder solo than competitive in Warmind :-(

Dude! I have 14 motes! Let me pick that one up! You can see how many I have over my head! You have three! Ugggggg. There's also always a time in the match where everyone just stops gathering motes for some reason… like we need 20 to get to our Primeval. Yeah they have theirs up, but why is nobody trying anymore? This happened a lot and I can't explain it.

Let's have a Gambit night PS4 DBO.

This might be due to the perception in the community that the "catch-up" mechanics in Gambit favor the team that summons their Primeval second. (See this thread, for example: https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/9jguj6/remove_the_catchup_system_in_gambit/)

There is another benefit to summoning second: you can send over taken ogres for them to deal with while they are trying to kill their Primeval. If you summon first, no more blockers.

I really hope that in future updates, there is a UI update to make this more obvious. As in, is you need one more to send something over, your above head counter should be blinking. The Higher you are... bronze silver gold or something obvious like that. Maybe a starburst or something.

Maybe make it a team based message "Player X needs 2 more for Med/Large", as small is done rather quickly, and best not to spam too much.

Of course, greed is a factor too suppose, but I'm not sure how to fix that. Best work on the UI instead to help deliver that information easier in the heat of battle.

It needs to be incorporated into the upper UI somehow, and not just over players’ heads I don’t know how many you have if I’m not looking at you.

It's more that you are looking at the mote instead of around to see who needs it. I did this to InsaneDrive twice one match. Cause I am naturally running around trying to grab the motes from the people I kill but he yells at me to stop, but my momentum is already there. I wasn't looking to see what he has, as then I have to stop and look for him.

No I get why it is the way it is. You want elements which you have to co-ordinate and keep track of as a team. Figuring out who should get motes or invade is definitely teamwork. It's just that those elements are super important to the outcome of the game, so if you do work as a team you will be way better off than a team of randos.

I'm torn on this. On the one hand, there is a lot going on in a game of Gambit, and that can be overwhelming for new players/teams of randoms who don't communicate. But, that depth and complexity is part of what makes it so good. Its a true TEAM game. It requires coordination, communication, and awareness. I don't think I want the game to start spelling that stuff out in the HUD. They already clearly communicate how many motes each player is carrying. If I, the player, don't think to look and check... well that's my bad, isn't it? Part of a good team game is leaving room for teamwork and coordination to make a real and significant difference. It's not that more UI cues would nullify that. But when I'm playing, I kinda want the UI to just get out of my way as much as possible, assuming it is already telling me all the crucial information. The more blinking, brightly-coloured indicators covering up my screen, the harder it is for me to focus on whatever I'm trying to focus on at that moment.

All my Gambit games so far have been solo. I've had quite an even mix of good and bad games. Definitely seen instances of people going AWOL when they should be gathering motes.

I also see people hiding from invaders when they have no motes to lose but also the opposite; taking the invader on when carrying lots of motes.

Haven't quite figured out the best way to play solo, when to use my super for instance. Or when to bank. I've been favouring banking for small and medium blockers but what seems to work well one game can fail miserably the next.

All my gambit games have been solo as well. I've found that being the guy ready to help where needed can be a big deal. I do this in a few different ways:

- Kill things and see if people are super greedy on motes, if they are "I killed that, I get those motes", or willing to let anyone have any motes. Just by being aware, I can work with people on how motes are gathered.
- Keeping an eye on blockers. Usually someone needs to deal with these. If nobody is, I'll put that as a goal above gathering motes. I will pick up heavy mid-match to deal with ogres, totally worth it.
- Being ready for invaders. I'm hit and miss here, but have been running with a fusion rifle or bow to help hunt these guys down. For example, if I have a fusion rifle equipped, and have motes, I will "hide" where they can close range so I can take them out. This also ties in with the above -- keep the blockers relatively clear.
- Taking out PvE snipers. These guys do major damage at primeval time, and with blueberries often they are ignored.
- Watching lost motes. If someone dies carrying 5, 10 or 15 motes, a PvE orange bar enemy will spawn at the next wave, who glows and drops bonus motes, I htiink to help the team catch up if they're paying attention. They will de-spawn after a time, so I prioritize these guys.
- Use the teleporters. Silly how often randos don't do this.
- Try to stay in a group of other players when clearing out things.

Also, a few things I've learned about along the way, that the internet could have taught me but I'm stubborn and learn through playing:
- Your portal opens to the other side once you hit the segmented lines in the mote bar, or if the other team summons a primeval. Use it or lose it.
- The white bar is how many motes your team is carrying un-banked.
- It's easy to over-extend in later rounds. Learn where the extra spawns come in so you don't get trapped and lose motes or be delayed by dying.
- Use a super or power weapon when invading. (Or sleeper, because sleeper, though I haven't gone there yet)
- It's worth taking a little time killing the extras around the primeval for the damage bonus, which can help immensely with burning down the primeval when that time comes.

I had no idea this was a thing. I'll have to watch out for it now!

I've found The Colony to be pretty awesome when invading. If the guy carrying 15 motes decides to turtle in a cave until you're gone, just lob a few spider mines into the area, then sit back and watch their white bar disappear :)

This is a good list. Few things I can add:

Dont hang on to motes just to get the next level of blocker. I've had the best results banking regardless of total as I move to the next spawn.

Pay attention to enemy totals (white bar totals). Not paying attention is the difference between banking 9 motes or getting stuck with a blocker and invader at 10. Especially in solo que - minimizing risk is usually the best strategy.

Never die ever.

Dont hang on to your super if you can do some meaningful orb generation with it. Keep the murder battery going and make those orbs.

This is the very definition of a back and forth game. I also have no idea how we won as you can see I wasn't helping out my team :D
