Murder Mystery Quest Discussion (Destiny)

Week 2 of the Thunderlord Quest is out. In short: Complete 4 lost sectors, wait til reset.
I was excited for Festival of the Lost this year. Forsaken revived my joy for Destiny for the first time since D1, and I thought the new festival of the lost would be great. A Murder Mystery Quest! It sure sounds exciting. But what we have done but the same things we were doing before the Event?
Haunted forest is great for what it is. It was new, and themed, and granted you access to an event exclusive weapon. This part was great. But thats about it. The actual "murder Mystery" has been lost to me. You get the journal pages, which you cannot even read, to find clues. In reality, you are finding x number of x, then waiting for a reset. How is that a quest where you are solving a murder? I understand why there are time gates (debatable) but to sell it as we are solving a murder feels wrong. I have no investment in the murder, and nothing in game making me care. I'm a mindless guardian doing what he is told.
On a lighter note, this was funded by Eververse (or so we are told) so its a neat free thing to earn an exotic. Granted its an exotic we had taken away because when Ghaul came all the old guns just ran away. The theme changes at the tower are cool, and the Haunted forest has potential that I think expands past this event. However, seeing that this quest seems to be leading right up to the Black armory, seems like a clever way to try and get people on the Annual pass.

Yeah, it's been a disappointing quest so far. I honestly didn't expect any better, but it's still a bummer.
It took me literally two minutes to do the first step last week--I spawned in at the church in the EDZ and there was the Cabal/Fallen enemies moving against each other event and I got all of the journal pages from that.
Maybe it will have a really cool finale? We can hope.

Well, the finale is that you get Thunderlord, so I think that's a given. :)
(I'm pretty disappointed, too.)

Has that ever actually been confirmed, or are we just taking it as a given from the data-mined stuff? In any case, yeah, I'm excited for that. I miss machine guns very much. They were my favorite heavy weapon in D1 by far.
I need to get back on doing the THAB summaries, because that was the only thing that encouraged me to actually read the damn things. (:
(I'm pretty disappointed, too.)
FWIW, it's not a huge deal. I think Festival of the Lost has mostly been cool. The Haunted Forest was really brilliant, I think. I'd have played a lot of it, if Red Dead Redemption 2 hadn't released in the middle of the event. I didn't even get Horror Story. ):
My biggest disappointment is the Tower decorations, honestly. Maybe it's just rose-colored glasses and remembering incorrectly, but I feel like the event decorations in the Tower in D1 were more expansive, whereas in D2 they're just confined to that immediate area where you spawn in. The lights were way cooler than the tree and engrams, I think.
That's a petty thing to be disappointed with, I guess, but it really set a cool tone for the Tower that I don't think they recaptured for these events.

The further we get into Destiny 2, the more this moment makes me laugh.
Really liked the tower music, top notch. Fun and festive!

Yeah, Haunted Forest was actually pretty fun, to my surprise. I had a good time, for the most part. Although, it was really pointless to make the modifiers the same for each round. The difficulty/challenge quickly becomes mundane. Hello, ODST? Randomizing modifiers, both good and bad, can create a better sense of unpredictability. Especially when they stack!
I was SUPER pissed off with the whole trolling gravity altering bridge collapsing ending after completing it, until I found out that I was supposed to die in order to respawn up top and access the only reason I had played HF in the first place. Yeah very funny Bungie, ha ha ha; you're just so....
Yeah, the Haunted Forest had its challenges, but it was met with equal insanity. This one guy who was real experienced in the subject matter...we got to a Nightmare boss and this guy just opened up his chest, and...I don't know if that's a Super or some special weapon, or for all I know, it could've been the Heart Of the friggin' Cards—but he was killing full blown Nightmares instantly.

With such a large Tower, you think they'd do more. Not to mention they could've done something with The Farm, The Farm too.
That's a pretty big thing to be disappointed with, I guess, but it really set a cool tone for the Tower that I don't think they recaptured for these events.
New Monarchy Week has more decorations each season. It hurts!

The heck are you talking about?! It was exactly like ODST, same modifiers for each round. They even stacked!!! Branch 9, for instance, had Attrition + Grounded + Blackout + Glass. Pure insanity.

That’s exactly my point; they’re all the same, every time, every round: meaning they haven’t learned their lesson from ODST.

ODST firefight is widely regarded as one of the highlights of the Halo franchise... not exactly sure why you’d accuse Bungie of not “learning their lesson” by bringing some of those elements forward into Destiny. It worked great then, as it does now :)

Of course it is. But the one flaw in Firefight that nearly every reviewer agreed with is that all the skulls came on in the exact same order and never changed. I haven’t played Firefight in at least four years. The last time I played ODST was doing the birthday video. It’s been four(or more) years and I still know the order of the round skull activation by heart.
That should not happen. Or at least there should’ve been an option not for that to happen.
This is what I meant by not learning lessons. Adding mototony to what was an impressively unique experience just brings the grind right back.

I’ve literally never heard that complaint before, and I’ve read a lot of reviews of ODST. Not saying you’re wrong, of course :) This is a very subjective point, though. I would argue that having the mods appear in a set order is crucial for a score-chase mode. Part of achieving a high score and then working to beat it is learning to plan and strategize better methods for dealing with each encounter. And for that to work, there needs to be a certain level of predictability. You don’t want high scores to be determined by a lucky rollout of mods during one run.
The only problem with it is that it's dark and dark is scary

I'm actually glad there isn't much to this, because man oh man do I not need more things to do in Destiny right now. Between trying to finish Riven, triple Gambit weekend, the Haunted Forest, and grinding in Competitive, the last thing I want is another substantial event. I'm hoping to finally take my first shot at Shattered Throne this week.

Insane and I were going to do it this week too. We should see if there is a time.
Also when have you been doing Comp? I have found the weekend mornings to be really good, atleast going positive overall.

Right now I'm pretty open for the rest of the week, but I know there's a bunch of activities that will crop up (gotta take leaves at some point too).
Most of my Comp points were earlier in the season. I tried playing Sunday afternoon, won a few games and then lost some, then I got matched 3v4 so I gave up and played Gambit. I'm at 1452 right now - I know it's just going to get way worse later in the season, so I might make a push this weekend.

Maybe if we finish the raid quickly tonight? I know high hopes/.
Yea mid day really? It's hard with all the football games but I may try. I think the same. People are going to be brought through. I honestly am thinking about paying a streamer to do it. 10 for every 100 points, I am 900 or so now. So get to 1500, I could pay 60 bucks, don't want to, but might be willing.
If you werent on Xbox I would do it for that! LOL

I have yet to try the shattered throne. I have two different purification rituals that require all or part of it though. I’d like help. Willing to join fireteams but my schedule usually means I can’t get on till 6:30-7:00 pm PST or later most nights (darn pt insists I excercise. Geez. Much rather sit on my couch)
Also have a ritual for doing the strike ascendant too. But probably can matchmaker for that.

I also have never tried shattered throne and usually don't get on until 8:30 central, same as you. (I've got plans tonight but) We can give it a go together one night this week if you are so inclined.

Murder Mystery Quest Discussion

Same. There's absolutely no emotion/devotion in the completing of this task. I'm literally just doing this to get a pursuit off my screen.
I understand why there are time gates (debatable) but to sell it as we are solving a murder feels wrong. I have no investment in the murder, and nothing in game making me care.
Meh. Debates aren't necessary; it sucks. If nothing else, it should be either an unlock set several days in advance but you can hasten it by performing system-wide activities; or more realistically an RNG timer set between 1 hour and 3 days. Think about it: if Amanda's decoding all this stuff for so many Guardians, do you think she'd have them all ready at exactly the same time in a week? If she's working on yours or someone else's or fixing a ship or whatever, staggered times of completion would be a lot more sensible in a busy world.
Putting in a reset brick wall is a stalling tactic that I'm pretty sure we as the Destiny community have outgrown. It's annoying as hell when we're working on uncovering something—regardless of how detached we are from the 'lore'—that we have to stop and wait until next Tuesday to continue forward with it. That annoyance skyrockets exponentially when we hit that roadblock on THIS damn Tuesday.
'Okay, you've gone to this place, done this, killed those specifics, and now you have to wait for a week. Next week, raid three Lost Sectors all next door to each other, and then wait another week.'
Master Ives was glitched anyway.
Even if they want to time-gate stuff . . .
by cheapLEY , Wednesday, November 07, 2018, 21:09 (2277 days ago) @ Morpheus
There are better ways to accomplish time delays.
Just waiting for the weekly reset sucks.
Make them based on community goals instead. Bungie already has all sorts of collectible materials in the game, through the salvage patrols. Let enemies drop those things all the time when necessary for a quest, and make the entire Destiny community collect millions of them, with the next quest step unlocking upon completion.
It accomplishes basically the same thing in that it extends the quest, but it also gives us something actually do and not just wait.
I desperately want to see more collective goals implemented in the game, and just having massive resource grinds seems like an easy enough place to start.
Imagine if there were some cool items that could only be unlocked from Festival of the Lost if the community collected a set amount of Fragmented Souls. The twist being that you would have to actually spend your souls into the collective bank to try and and unlock them. So you would have to choose between helping the entire community or buying that Shaxx mask (or just both, if you played a lot).
Now imagine something like that implemented for every vendor and activity in the game. Faction Rallies could change to be something like that, versus some half-assed competition. But again, there'd be that trade-off of choosing between adding to the community bank or just buying faction engrams.
I think it would be a cool way to do live events, and it would actually let the community work together to accomplish a goal, rather than just collectively waiting for the next quest step to unlock.
Even if they want to time-gate stuff . . .
by Xenos , Shores of Time, Thursday, November 08, 2018, 12:39 (2276 days ago) @ cheapLEY
Personally, I would be totally fine with the delays if the steps were actually interesting and/or added some lore. Having steps that only take about 10 minutes of non-new gameplay and provide zero info about the actual story of the murder makes no sense with the week-long time delay.
+1
