After watching a few vids (not sure why I hadn't before), you not only need to leave the portal, as Chappy said... but you NEED TO HAVE THE SWORD WITH YOU.

WHY WOULD YOU EVER DROP ONE OF THOSE SWORDS BEFORE IT WAS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY?! ;p
