AI-COM//MDSA: FARFLUNG//C3I//COVERT *Spoilers* (Destiny)

Completing this week's Blind Well weekly challenge gets you a new letter from Eris Morn... except it's not from Eris. And neither was the last one. It seems that what has actually been communicating with us is a Golden Age AI that traveled with the people who eventually became the Awoken. This AI tried to gain our trust by pretending to be Eris, but our Ghost saw through the AI's attempts to hide its usual header information until the AI finally gave up and introduced itself properly:
Now you know the truth. I am Medusa, survivor of the Golden Age, secret watcher over the Dreaming City. And I need your help.
Whether this leads to a gameplay impact or not, even if it's just an ongoing Grimoire-type story, it makes me smile so big to have an AI pulling text based shenanigans in a Bungie game once more. :)
(If you haven't done your offering to the oracle yet or won't have time for a while, you can find the full text here: Will you smile?
Very cool

I love where Bungie is taking things right now. As an aside, that’s some damn fine writing, too :)

I wish I had any motivation at all to do anything in the Dreaming City, because I just don't. I feel like I unlocked it, and then was given no reason to do anything there. And I'm sorry, but with the sheer amount of constant crap to do every time I sign in, even doing so much as exploring just hasn't felt worth it. Plus, I feel like at this point I've missed, uh, damn near everything, so why bother?
I miss Year One. I miss not having to grind. I miss not having to chase loot drops. I miss the game at least pretending to respect that I had a life and my time was valued.
As it is, I've felt burned out for over a month. I fully planned to bail and then the festival dropped and became a thing worth doing. And now that I have Horror Story, I'm getting drops that feel worthwhile again. Which has turned doing weekly and daily chores into tasks worth grinding out again.
Ugh. When the next update for Elite drops, I'm for sure ducking out for a few weeks. The entire game just feels draining.

It's a little ironic to be complaining about having to grind, then planning on playing Elite.
I genuinely enjoy Elite, but, damn, talk about having to grind. That game is basically 100% grind!
I understand where you're coming from, even if I disagree. Yeah, the soft cap and progression thereafter genuinely sucks. But I feel the complete opposite about the Dreaming City. It is so crammed full of worthwhile, fun things to do. I do wish there was a more gently ramp-up into the Dreaming City. It felt like the Tangled Shore got abandoned really fast. You get into the Dreaming City at a low enough level that it legitimately feels like you're not supposed to be there yet, but you're also well past the soft cap by that point, so the Tangled Shore feels pointless in terms of gaining power. It's really a messy portion of Forsaken, I think.
Any opinions on... you know... the Lore?

Eris Morn? Medusa? The several in-game books of stories? Anything? I didn’t expect this to be a big topic with a lot of replies, but seeing it tumble into “the grind sucks” by the second reply was pretty dang odd. :(

I don't know--I didn't read it.
For whatever reason, I really prefer to read this stuff after I unlock it myself in the game, if I can. I intend to try and do it this week if I can find the time.

Fair point.
I think the difference, to me at least, is Elite's grind is the easiest thing in the world to just ignore. You don't have to do anything. It's like, I should grind out materials and spent time with engineers, unlocking each one, perfecting and min/maxing my Chieftain... But I don't have to, and haven't outside of a few cases. My boat is fun as hell to fly and is perfectly capable of holding its own in a fight. Elite's grind is a much easier thing to set aside and completely dismiss, and even when you have to acknowledge it, like when saving up for a shiny new 'Conda or 'Vette, it still doesn't feel life draining. The only time it does, is if you decide you have to have that shiny new thing right now.
By contrast, Destiny now feels like a constant slog where I'm fighting for every increase in light level, corralled into activities I'd rather not do, or am bored of, simply for the right type of drops, which I then have to go farm additional stuff for because otherwise they're useless because I can't use them to infuse. As an addendum to my Year One list of things I miss: I miss doing whatever I wanted to make steady progress.
My intention was never to thread-jack, and I have, because I posted when I wasn't thinking terribly clearly and tired. So my bad, and I'll quit now. As a contribution to what this is all actually about... The lore is good stuff, what little of it I've taken time to read (which is another rant, I think I just can't be made happy with the Grimoire). It's absolutely like dipping into the Terminals from Halo and Marathon, in some cases, it's like dipping into an actual novel. This one though, and I say this having not experienced it myself, feels like it shouldn't even be text. It should be integrated into gameplay in some way.

Because the Dreaming City is awesome! I hate that Destiny brought back the grind, but I love how they are sprinkling ongoing story into the game. It feels a bit more like the Bungie of old somehow. If you are part of the clan just start inviting others to play. We’ll be happy to show you the wonders of the Dreaming City.

The question I have is: Why did it even try to disguise it's identity in the first place? Why would it think we wouldn't trust it?

Because it clearly thinks we shouldn't trust Golden Age AIs. You know, like Rasputin. *ominous music*
