On a scale of Laika to Chris Hadfield, just how excited are you for Miss Congeniality and Terrible Batman's Excellent Adventure in Space?

Now, excuse me while I skip the rest of this thread... :)

As much as I like space exploration and Children of Men, I can't get too excited with George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, personally. They're just too distinct, too handsome, with little range in their acting, that I have a hard time getting past them in any movie and believe it. Though there's always exceptions, like Oh, Brother Where Art Thou...

Honestly, this is the main reason I'm not crazy about this movie right now. I get skeptical when George Clooney's in a movie, because instead of getting into the story and world I keep expecting him to jump out of character and say, "Bet you didn't know it was me, that was acting."

I like a little story in my movies. This looks like 90(-ish) minutes of thrill with no substance. I'll pass.

(And to be fair, Clooney didn't exactly have much to work with on that particular script. Acting can only do just so much to make up for really terrible writing.)

You are unfairly writing this off. Trust me. And if you write it off now you can never see it in 3D, which makes a huge difference because the 3D is used to support the story, not as a gimmick. It's utterly immersive and unnerving.

This is a film meant to be seen on a big screen, and it's pretty spectacular.

You're assuming, of course, I had any inclination toward the 3D experience to begin with. In fact, I can't remember the last time I watched a movie in an actual theater. I'll wait for the reviews and see if that sways me -- in which case, I'm still gonna wait until it comes out on DVD and rent it. :)

Heh, maybe for you. For me, it's all about the storytelling in a visual medium. I don't really care if it's on a 5-story screen in 3D with all the lights and bells or whistles -- or on my iPhone 4 screen. If the story isn't good, as far as I'm concerned, the flick is a yawner. Action films are not historically noted for strong storytelling (with a few exceptions). All I'm saying is that, so far, nothing in the trailers for Gravity make the film stand out to me. I'd be delighted to be proven wrong, but that point remains to be seen until the film actually releases.

The older I get, the more annoyed I get at movie audiences and theater/projection quality, the rising cost of movies, and the better our home equipment gets... the more I just view Blu Ray releases as the real date.

I essentially only see movies in theaters to avoid spoilers, and do so at the earliest showings during the weekdays. I think I saw two movies this year in a theater.

I usually do it for the experience, like I did with IMAX Into Darkness, Dark Knight Returns and regular Avengers (all totally worth the extra bling spent). However, I do admit the times where I find it worth it are getting rarer and rarer.

To be fair, my discretionary budget for media is almost non-existent these days. My wife and I have been working on aggressive debt repayment the last couple of years, trying to get unburied from old school loans, mortgage payments, and other bills. Most of the cash I can spare gets reserved for things I'll actually invest time in (like next-gen consoles and certain games that catch my eye), so I can't justify the expense of going to a theater for a movie when I can rent the film and have a more enjoyable experience at home. In order to get me into the theater, the film has to be more than exceptional and catch my interest in some way that makes it stand out. Plus, I'm super picky about my media, movies and music both. Basically, I'm a tough critic. :)

We put an effort into seeing Hobbit in 3D, IMAX, and in 60fps. It was pretty surreal and worth it. Usually only IMAX or only 3D doesn't enhance the experience enough for me to justify the price or gas money. Plus 3D is usually pretty cheesy and gives me headaches.

If anything, the thing I crave in a theater experience is just silence (and quality visuals and sound, of course), which I can rarely find. If I do, I can lose myself in a movie and forget my surroundings. If I can get to that point, I forget I'm even watching 3D or IMAX, as the movie itself has already wrapped itself around me on its inherent qualities.

So what would get me excited is an Enforced Quality Audience format, where microphones and light detectors are in every armrest, alerting guards to escort these distractions out (who are then barred forever from the premises). That would enhance the movie lightyears beyond 3D for me. :)

To be fair, the term "IMAX" means relatively little these days. Digital IMAX is often just two 2K projectors used together to get a normal-theater-quality image onto a slightly larger screen without it winding up too dim.

Actual IMAX is awesome.

This pains me to no end. If you're going to pay the premium, at least get the real thing. I have no idea why IMAX is diluting their brand, because even on their webpage they list fake imax theatres under the find a location section.

If the screen is not 100 feet tall and it's not projecting real 65mm imax film (or the digital equivalent 8K), you aren't seeing it for real.

What a wonderful film. I'm going to enjoy processing it. "Don't let go." Goes deeper than I thought. And that music is just coursing through me.

I saw it in "IMAX 3D" in a normal (nice) theater and Cody's right about that being a dilution of the IMAX brand. It was still good, but it wasn't IMAX, not even close. What bugged me most, though, were the shitty glasses they make you wear. I'd actually be inclined to see more 3D movies if I had a nice pair of comfortable, clear, well-made 3D glasses. It makes a huge difference.

My boyfriend and I caught Gravity in the middle of the afternoon and it seemed like we were the only youngsters in the theatre. These old timers sitting next to us talked at the top of their lungs during the ads and trailers, reminded each other that Tom Clancy passed away yesterday, and "Oh yeah, Barabra, we gotta see that!" was their greatest, most dire concern when The Geriatric Hangover trailer was over. During the movie, they wrestled their hand around in the popcorn during intense silent moments you'd typically want everyone to shut the fuck up for.

Nope. Old timers are just as terrible as pimple-faced morons and they never bring candy for us.

...I wonder if the director intended for the eight people in front of me to be texting and tweeting during the movie? Did the director intend for the old couple behind me to be wheezing and making noises with a candy wrapper the whole time? Did the director intend for the movie to be slightly out of focus? Was I supposed to hear what happened to Janine at work yesterday from the couple next to me?

I find it very, very rare to have theater screenings actually representative of what the filmmaker imagined. My girlfriend, a projectionist, finds it even harder. But since the ingredients for a quality home theater these days are somewhat affordable, I find that's by the far the closest you can get to focused, immersive, and meditative viewing.

So then in this particular circumstance, the question is: if you don't have 3D capability in your home, is it worth risking all those other distractions and faults with the theater experienced as mentioned above to experience it that way? For me, it is usually not worth it.

I would love for more filmmakers to be more focused on delivering the optimum format for home release, the best transfers, etc., especially since that's the only way their movie lives on in time.

Really, there have only been a few times that I think the theater experience was worth it over a quality home experience. I like the ideal concept of a theater, but yeah, you vary rarely get that. I also enjoy it when you get a good audience, not a silent one, but one that laughs and cheers and cringes with you at the right times. But again getting that is pretty rare too. :(

I must be very out of touch.

I generally see films for free, at industry screenings where the quality is optimal and audience respectful, but when I go out and pay like everybody else, I still manage to get a good experience. I saw Titanic 3D at the THREE DOLLAR second run theatre, and it was great.

I can count on my index finger the number of times going to a theatre was 'bad'. And that was in Detroit.

Hah, wow, yep. That sounds out of touch to me. :) I can count on one hand the times I've had a good theater experience in the last 7 years. There aren't even second run theaters around here anymore, AMC dominates all. The few cool, indie theaters serve alcoholic drinks and food during the movie so there's way too much noise and loose lips for me. I have to drive about 40 minutes to a usually deserted theater in Kansas, on Mondays, at 10:30 AM, to see those big movies I feel like I need to see to avoid spoilers.

But also, my two experiences at this one new (to me) theater are an oddity and are a vast minority of my movie experience. Usually things are decent, with good audio, and good picture. I fully expect the other theater in this town to be just fine as well. My point, which admittedly got a bit lost in my unhappiness with one theater, is that experiences can vary greatly.

I saw it at a local, fairly upscale shopping center cineplex at the first showing of the day--1 p.m. The theater was about 1/4 full with people roughly my age and older (read OLD).

Had an aisle to myself basically and no one in front of me (with stadium seating that wouldn't have mattered much). I never heard anyone say a word. Never heard or saw any phones after the lights went down.

It really is a wonderful movie. The 3-D really adds to the experience, and not in a bad way. Distances are a very important element of the story, and 3-D serves that well.

I'm going to see it again on an IMAX screen.

If 3D is so required, hopefully the filmmakers wont let it be released any other way.

You know this is very interesting, because we don't live in the 1940s where films were only seen in theatres. The reality is some people will not watch it the way it's supposed to be seen. And that's hard because you can't totally utilize your format because of that.

Like, in IMAX you can have a wide shot and every wrinkle on a character's face is visible, and the aspect ratio is 1.43:1. So you can populate your frame completely differently with more vertical compositions and fewer close ups. But on a phone or even a 16:9 HDTV? It'd look like shit unless you compromise and film thinking about how it'll look other ways.

There is no way that a large budget film will be released ONLY in IMAX theatres, since there's only about 400 in the world. Smaller budget or specialty films sure. But Dark Knight Rises is going to be shown at the murderplex.

It is not always an option to only release your film a specific way.

Honestly, when I realized Alfonso Cuarón, who also made "Children of Men", was the director, that was all I needed to know.

There are only 156 shots in the film. One shot is 17 minutes. Consider most films have 2000+

The fact that everything unfolds fluidly in long takes, and the 3-D make it so immersive.

I dream of the day when I'm an old man that video games are as immersive as the first person stuff in Gravity!

Gravity

I've been wetting myself about this film for months now. Mostly because it reminds me so much of Bradbury's Kaleidoscope (my favorite short story).

That and Cuaron came out and said there will be no explosion sounds in space. Sploosh.

Just got back from watching it in 3-D. So, so many long shots, the first 20 minutes I think didn't cut away, and the camera kept spinning around with the characters. George Clooney was definitely a bit too cheeky, too jokey in this role, but Bullock was fine. The physics stayed largely realistic and consistent, except for one obvious part where it didn't, just in order to serve the plot. The lack of sound was my favorite part; not hearing the debris flying around, but knowing it's traveling miles per second, was pretty frightening, much like not being able to see the monster in a horror movie might be.

That was fantastic. Why aren't you going to see it right now!?!

I'm not terribly well versed in film. I sometimes catch new releases that I want to see when they first hit theaters, and how much I like a film is usually based on how I feel about the characters and the story. That all being said, I haven't been this emotionally satisfied with the entirety of a film since The King's Speech, and that movie didn't have the freaking gorgeous visuals on display here. If I had to pick one thing I didn't like, it would be Clooney, but I had even warmed up to his character as the movie progressed.

I don't even want to watch anything else right now for fear of ruining the wonderful taste left in my mouth, figuratively speaking.

I want to know what you thought, Roland.

The science seemed pretty accurate except that I can't figure out why Kowalksi had to detach or why he moved away when he did detach. What moved him?

That covers the trailer well. I'd really like an analysis of the whole movie. I had assumed that some of what happens in not really possible (traveling from one orbital object to another the way they do), but the one incident I mentioned in my post didn't make sense with my basic understanding of physics. I mentioned it because it was the only moment (for me, anyway) that made me go, "huh?" while I was watching it.

In general, the physics seemed very realistic.

Space and Sci Fi

by Cody Miller @, Music of the Spheres - Never Forgot, Monday, October 07, 2013, 09:47 (4068 days ago) @ Grizzlei

As a kid I was really into space. Everybody else was interested in Dinosaurs (especially with Jurassic Park coming out), but I loved the planets, stars and Galaxies. I thought that one day I'd be able to explore them, and that eventually humanity would be able to take themselves out into the universe for discovery.

I wanted to be an astronaut so badly.

I'd say the majority of Sci-Fi views space this way: as adventurous, as a frontier for discovery. Certainly Destiny will. Hop on a ship, and you're on Titan. Ain't no thang.

Much rarer is the view of space that I reluctantly have to agree with being correct: It's desolate. Unexplorable by man. Inhospitable. Deadly. Terrifying. A prison really.

As much as I believe there is probably life out there, the laws of physics being what they are probably makes any contact impossible. Manned travel significant distances is impossible. When our Earth is rendered inhospitable in 800 million years, all of humanity's knowledge, art, culture and creation dies with us. On a tiny spec unnoticed in the picture of the universe where each supercluster of galaxies is but a pale white dot.

It's understandable why a lot of sci-fi doesn't go there. It's the most depressing thing about existence. It's one of the main themes of Policenauts, which isn't the first thing to explore that idea, but it was one that really resonated with me.

Maybe that's why Gravity connected with me. It brought that back.

I finally saw this movie yesterday.

I would like to add to the "You should see this in theaters" chorus.

The movie does some amazing things with 3d and high resolution that you would be hard pressed to replicate in a home environment.

Some movies use 3d as a gimmick. This isn't one of them.

Also, as someone who has never cared about Sandra Bullock, I was impressed with her performance. The sets and the attention to detail in space were amazing.

Some movies use 3d as a gimmick. This isn't one of them.

That's partly because the vast majority of movies are shot in 2D and then the 3D effect is faked in post.

Hmmm... looks like this one was too. But long, wide shots and lots of CG make it feel more natural I imagine.
