Bungie still believes in Destiny (Destiny)
This is floating out there as proof that Bungie paid 91 mil to get back the publishing rights…
That's not really what it says FYI, but the bottom line is Bungie paid something to get back publishing rights:
Activision agreed to transfer its publishing rights for the Destiny franchise to Bungie in exchange for cash…
So, I think they at least believe it has enough of a future for them to buy it back. I'm guessing they aren't done with it for a while…

P.S. Any lawyers out there feel free to explain this to me better.

What if...
Do you think the "Season of [REDACTED]" and now apparently is "Season of Opulence" is related to their break up with Activision? As in, Bungie wanted to give us something for the final season in the road map but Activision wasn't keen on it. They knew the departure was in the works but before they committed to Season of Opulence or Season of Compromise, they wanted to make sure they were able to make what THEY wanted.
Once Activision was out of the way, now they can spoil us with riches and give us everything they've wanted to, and a lot of what we've asked for. Like D1 Raids, worlds, weapons, game modes, whatever.
As far as history and timelines go, is Season of Opulence and equivalent to Rise of Iron update? Could Season of Opulence be the final update for D2, so they are going to use it as a vessel to continuously feed content until D3?

The “next thing” comment in the Vidoc would inply that they aren’t riding SoO too long.

I just rewatched the ViDoc and didn't get that impression from those final comments. I took it as, whatever is coming after SoO is going to be really rad but it didn't make me think that SoO was going to be a passive event.
I may be totally off on this one, but was Rise of Iron more of a contractual obligation thing? As in, it more so fulfilled a requirement instead of offering the send off of D1 that Bungie wanted? Due to this, my conspiracy theory is born. What they could make for Season of Redacted was always a variable. Had they stayed with Activision, we would be getting "Season of the Begrudged" or something. But now they are free and clear, so, "Season of Opulence"

I don’t know... we also had Luke Smith talking about Vicarious Visions “readying their Destiny swan song with content that will appear in the upcoming Season of [Redacted].” Their work on Warmind was pretty good. I’m hoping that Penumbra / Season of Opulance is something of a lead in to The Darkness returning to our system... So, some more shenanigans from Calus and a final strong tease in preparation for whatever comes next...

I didn’t mean to imply they wouldn’t be putting effort in to it. Just I doubt that SoO would majorly change due to the split or exceed the current 3-month-Season trend we have going. RoFe was to “buy time” to rework D2 from what I remember of the rumor mills. But that decision would have been made shortly after TTK, given development timelines. That’s the reason I doubt that SoO is going to be different than what Bungie had previously planned. Especially with VV being an Activision studio, I would imagine the content is mostly set in stone for next Season.
Bungie still believes in Destiny
Of course Destiny is valued by Bungie, I mean it's their god damn baby, and they want to carry it forward.
I have no doubt that the next main-line Destiny release will be big and bombastic.
