Keanu believe it? (Gaming)
Last year, jaws were collectively dropped (including mine) from the real-time renderings of Unreal Engine 5. There has sience been a bunch of talks'n chats made about how the pudding is made. "Virtualized geometry" and the sort. Very cool.
Well, on the 9th apparently, those of use with the fortune to either have a PS5 or Xbox SX are going to be able to see some advertising showcasing what the Unreal Engine 5 can do.
No idea what its going to be, but it's sure cool enough to share yeah?
So did this happen?

I’ve been so confused on my dates/days this week.
It's Time.

So, I recorded the first segment of this reveal, and it looks fantastic! There's some slight frame delay between scenes, but it all felt so....real! lol
After the chase, there's an interactive demo of UE5, highlighting technical aspects and what not. I can't really check it out since I have to leave on a trip today, but download it and see for yourself! It's really cool!

Imagine how much better it could have looked in 1080p! :-p
But yeah. It's crazy that real time rendering now is better than the digital doubles from Reloaded.

Is it that impressive? I played it, it’s fine, but I wasn’t wowed. Lots of games look as good and even better than that.

What game looks better?
Depends on what we’re talking about. The car chase looks awful by about any standard. None of that looked real in any sense—the cars looked like GTA V or something. Naughty Dog’s characters and animations are more convincing. I got massive uncanny valley during this that I don’t get from Last of Us or Uncharted or even something like Detroit. Hellblade’s main character is more convincing than this was, and that game is pretty old now.

I think that's because the rendering of the characters is now close enough that the uncanny valley comes into play… the games you mentioned are far enough from realistic that you can look at them as animated still.

You realize the opening was largely real time rendering too right? Where Keanu wakes up, and is later talking to you?

And? Lots of games have real time rendered cutscenes, and the one you’re talking about was not all that convincing to me.
It might be technically impressive, but it looked no more real or convincing than Drake’s house in Uncharted 4. That’s at a glance, mind. I got bored halfway through that demo and quit. But nothing in it stood out as mind blowing.
It also doesn’t even run at a stable 30 fps. I thought you were all about performance? I’ve become accustomed to 60 or even 120fps. The last thing I want is games to go back to 30 to look slightly prettier.

They aimed for 24 fps on purpose. And man, I do not know what you are talking about. That shot where he woke up in front of the computer looked damn near perfect. Uncharted is nowhere close.

Not during the actual gameplay. The opening is 24fps because there’s actual video mixed in, so they can blend it together. The gameplay sections are 30fps, and they’re pretty choppy. Which, fine, it’s a tech demo they made pretty quickly. It’s a pretty good tech demo, some of the tech is impressive. It’s nowhere near impressive enough that I’d want to play a game at 27fps.
Everything is amazing and ...
I was impressed. I admit I rarely can see the subtleties that Digital Foundry routinely notices, but my eyes are old. I think the demo really shines when you go into night mode in the exploring section. I'd say it's a big step up from GTA V, and that's saying something. I agree that the gameplay was mediocre. It's pretty obvious that wasn't their focus.
